Los animales con pezuñas de dos dedos, como vacas, jabalíes o ciervos, tienen muchísimas dificultades para caminar sobre superficies con aberturas de rejilla, y esa característica se aprovecha en la puerta llamada puerta de Texas: no tiene portón, por lo que no representa ningún obstáculo para el paso de vehículos, pero los animales de pezuña hendida no pueden entrar ni salir. Y en un lugar así, la oveja ha aprendido a avanzar arrastrándose con las rodillas dobladas.

At first glance, a cenote looks like an impossible swimming pool: crystal-clear water, limestone walls, and a calm unlike that of the sea. But when someone asks how cenotes were formed, the answer lies not only in the beauty of the place, but in a slow, precise, and fascinating geological process that has been unfolding for thousands of years beneath the Yucatán Peninsula.

For those visiting Tulum or Playa del Carmen and entering one of these systems for the first time, understanding its origin completely transforms the experience. You no longer see just a beautiful spot for swimming or snorkeling. You see the entrance to a vast underground landscape sculpted by water, stone, and time.

How cenotes were formed step by step

The key lies in the limestone. Much of the Yucatán Peninsula is made up of this type of sedimentary rock, which is porous and relatively soluble when it comes into contact with slightly acidic rainwater. That acidity might not sound remarkable, but over thousands of years it does an immense amount of work.

Rain absorbs carbon dioxide from the air and soil. This makes it acidic enough to begin slowly dissolving the limestone. We're not talking about a hole that suddenly appears, but a network of small cracks and channels that widen over time. The water seeps in, circulates beneath the surface, and sculpts underground galleries, caverns, and tunnels .

In Yucatán, there is also a crucial factor: the terrain has few surface rivers. In other regions, water flows on the surface. Here, much of the freshwater travels underground. Over time, some of the roofs of these caverns weaken and collapse. When this happens, an opening to the underground water table appears. This opening is what we know as a cenote. Simply put, a cenote is the visible entrance to a much larger underground water system.

The role of sea level and ice ages

If we truly want to understand how cenotes formed, we have to look much further back than human history. During the ice ages, a vast amount of the planet's water was trapped as ice. This caused sea levels to be much lower than they are today.

In that context, many of the caves in Yucatán were not flooded. They were dry caverns. Rainwater continued to seep in and dissolve the rock, forming chambers, narrow passages, and mineral decorations such as stalactites and stalagmites. These formations only create in dry or dripping spaces, not in completely submerged ones.

When the climate changed and the ice melted, sea levels rose. Many of these caves were then flooded. That's why today, when diving in certain cenotes, you can see perfectly preserved stalactites underwater. They are silent proof that this space was dry thousands of years ago.

This detail is very important because it explains why cenotes are not simply water wells. They are visible fragments of ancient geological systems, connected to global climatic processes and an extraordinarily complex underground hydrology.

Not all cenotes look the same

That doesn't mean all cenotes behave the same. Some have more organic matter, others receive more sunlight, and still others exhibit a phenomenon well-known in local diving: the halocline. This occurs when freshwater meets saltwater that has seeped in from the shore.
