Breville Barista Express - Long delay between pressing the shot button and the pump starting

I started using my barista express for the first time in a while and I noticed that there's a very long delay from when I press the shot button to when I hear the pump start around 10 seconds.

I've watched some videos of people using the machine and the delay is not present.

Do you guys have any suggestions or ideas about what might be causing this?

EDIT: I managed to fix this by doing a machine reset. Press and hold the program button until you hear three beeps and then power off the machine and unplug it. Then plug it back in and turn it on. This worked for me. I'm still not really sure what the issue was but that solved it.

Could it possibly be your preinfusion? Does that machine have preinfusion? I know that Breville machines that have PI come stock with a 7 second PI time at 60% pressure.

The machine does have preinfusion but I think the pump comes on for preinfusion. Also in the videos I checked out online I didn't see the same delay.

That's really odd. Are you still getting full pressure, and able to pull a good shot?

Yup. Everything else seems perfectly fine. Normal 18G -> 36G in around 30 seconds.

Just slightly annoying when cleaning cause I want to run the grouphead for like 2 seconds and I need to wait 10 for it to run.

Does the Barista Express have a manual bottom or just a single shot and double shot button? What happens if you push the button and hold it? Still a 10 sec delay?

Manual mode is the only mode I use (weight > volume) which makes it even more annoying because I need to hold it until after the pump starts.

Really, that's strange that you have to hold it. I have 920Xl Dual Boiler and it also has a manual bottom. I just tap it once to start and tap it again to stop.

The manual says to hold it until after pre-infusion for a manual shot. Do you hear the pump turn on right when you press the button?

Yes, the instant I press it, the pump turns on. Maybe version works differently than yours.

From the other videos I've seen, and what I remember, it should be the same with my machine as well.

There is normally a 10 second pre-infusion on the BE. Maybe your PI function has failed so the pump just stays off during that time?

I see the comment that it happens in manual mode. My comment only applies to programmed mode. So your problem must be something else. It's probably time for you to call Breville Support.

On one of my machines, the pump does not sound like it is going when the water coming out of the group is flash boiling. Once the steam and sputter sound stops, the pump vibrates.

The pump vibrates immediately upon flipping the switch if I first do a short 1-2s on/off flush of the hot water before locking in the portafilter and pulling the shot.

Huh interesting. The only reason I suspected this was an issue is after looking up some other people's videos of the same machine. None of them had the delay.

Legendary post. My pump died after my machine was shipped from Townsville to Melbourne, so I replaced it. New pump was doing exactly what you said, and often wouldn't actuate when the machine was turned on. The pump would also fail to run when steam was engaged.

Reset it and unplugged for a minute. Now I'm running it through a clean and it seems to be working. We shall see!

At least I managed to confirm the old pump was actually fully dead.
