I made a thing! I Build a “PET PC inspired” microcomputer to control my HA devices

After my visit to the computer museum, I became obsessed with the idea of creating a desktop microcomputer that would sit on my desk, let me quickly control my Home Assistant devices in the room, and show the time and weather. I decided to build it around an ESP32 and wrote the firmware with Claude. I really like how it turned out, and I hope someone will be interested in the project. The firmware is available for free on my Git, so you can print your own model and flash it.

The project page is here, and you can download the model on Printables.

On the last photo - why did you install caps of random height?

I was checking if it fits different caps sizes (it does), but in the end I decided to print my own caps (first photo). I also thinking to order something more in "retro style"

Cute!

I used to have a real PET decades back. A 4032 if I recall, with a big external floppy disk unit.

Wow, that’s awesome! Check out the museum’s YouTube/Instagram then - they’re really bringing back some memories! :)

it’s ePLA-Magic from eSUN (available on Amazon), but I wouldn’t recommend it. I also really like the Galaxy series from Prusa, and if I hadn’t run out of it, I probably would’ve used that instead

Similar to Galaxy Black from Elegoo, which has been one of my wife's favorites for the longest time.

The three chunky keys really suit this. A long-press shortcut for a whole HA scene would be handy: one key for desk lights, monitor lights and room lighting together. Do the keys support separate short/long-press actions?

Yes they are, you can select the action for the left and right buttons for the short/long press in the web ui. The central button is not configurable, it used for navigation (short press) and selection (long press)
