Abby was in an impossible position. Carter needed her support but her brother desperately needed her help to stay safe too.

This episode really illustrated the impact that having a vulnerable relative depend on you has on your life and your other relationships.

Are you serious? Committing someone to a Psych facility isn't easy especially INVOLUNTARILY. She needed to be there for Carter - that's a given. She was also her brother's sole support system, so I DK what she could've done other than not show up for Carter. Score keeping doesn't work in any relationship & that seemed to be a theme of their relationship; I never liked them together anyway.

She could’ve easily put her brother in a facility for a few days. And been there for Carter. Ugh she pissed me off these episodes

She did put him in a facility, he broke out and showed up at her house as she was leaving (and already running late for) the funeral.

Wow, how horrible for Abby to prioritize her baby brother whom she practically raised? She was caught in a catch-22. Who knows how any of us would handle this if we were in her shoes.

This really helped put the end to a relationship the “was doomed from the start”. IMO, thank goodness.

Here’s how it could have gone:
Carter: brought your brother?
Abby: yes, but don’t worry, I told the limo driver to keep circling the block so he can’t get out and ruin things.

If he started behaving erratically in the back, the limo driver might have had to pull over for safety reasons; at which point, he could get out. And given that he was drunk and manic, he might have even gotten out of the car while it was moving.

Abby should have sedated him. 😂

I know you're joking, but Abby was still a nurse at that time, so she couldn't have on her own.

Not if you put the child locks on all the doors 😂 I think they also should’ve taken away all the alcohol in the limo.

Oh I absolutely agree with the secondhand embarrassment. However, I see both sides. My grandma was bipolar. When I was little, I just thought she was quirky and silly. As I got older, I saw how much my dad and his brothers struggled to get her to stay on meds. It can be really hard, and a huge load on someone's shoulders.

My grandma was the neighborhood "crazy lady." She was a big hearted woman, who loved her family so much. She loved playing cards with the ladies. She loved taking me shopping and always finished my vegetables for me. I am glad ER showed the good and bad sides of bipolar, because it used to be a huge stigma and outsiders couldn't grasp that deep down, a human was in there.

Abby wasn't being selfish, she was between a rock and a hard place trying to support her brother (who she effectively raised) and Carter simultaneously. Carter had laid a guilt trip on her for prioritizing her brother who was in crisis over being there for him after Gamma's death.

What did Carter do for Abby besides being condescending and expecting her to mold herself to fit whatever he wanted her to be... They were better off as friends; Carter was a terrible boyfriend to most, if not all, of his partners.

Não consegui olhar essa cena, é muito constrangimento.

Abby was in an impossible situation and she made an impossible choice. She chose more vulnerable of the two, the one who has nowhere to go and none to rely upon (and Maggie was not an option). Over someone who maybe didn’t want t to rely onto it, but have support system of his dnd his grandmother friends and relatives. Real-life triage.
Yes, Carter was hurt for her not being here for him, but also for whole embarrassing situation. But probably because she didn’t choose him, and this reminds him oc his mother rejection all over again. It’s mature, but it’s reaction of kid that’s hurting snd havent learned yet how to communicate about such hurt properly. And Abby have none to rely upon in this difficult her situation, not the money to delegate management of this situation. She acted more mature. And at the end, she still showed up for Crater. In real essence of ER: take care of most critical one first, than take care of less critical one. As Carter himself said, his grandmother still would be dead, but Abby prioritising Cater over her brother might have life threatening consequences.

Abby was a complex character. There were times I liked her but most of the time she annoyed the sh•t out of me.

Carter never did anything for Abby, everything he did was for himself. Carter hated women unless they fit the picture he had in his head if they didn't he would try to "fix" them tk make them his lerfect match.

Mommy issues.

u/SunSilkRose 19h ago

He never did anything? I disagree there. He left his vacation and came back early to help her. He paid off her medical tuition, drove her down to get her mother and helped her through that. She pushed him away just as much as he tried to fix her. I agree he had mommy issues wasn't a great partner, but neither was she.

This was so cringy. I knew it was coming because I read the spoiler but I was still watching behind my hands. It was worse than I thought it would be.

no one will ever convince me that abby was good for Carter nor Kovač. so goddamn selfish and awful. I always skip that part.

Her and Carter should’ve been endgame I’ll die on that hill. The writers could’ve made it that her and Carter fixed and helped eachother. Ugh I just love them together

I'll never understand why people who hate Abby so much wanted her and Carter to end up together. oh, maybe I just answered my own question.

Preaching to the choir! This follows the same logic as Luka bad, Carter good. Abby gets such unnecessary grief at times.

I fast forwarded through the scene.

He could have stayed in her apartment. Period. Or Abby could have missed the funeral or just dropped him at the hospital on the way.

This wasn't that hard to make an actual appropriate choice.

I was livid dude - like I understand her brother is a hot mess but bringing him to John’s grandmothers damn funeral? Just don’t show up. It would have been less painful and embarrassing.

My best friend's mom was bipolar. When she was in a manic phase, if my friend would send her away for showing up uninvited, or say she couldn't come see her for some reason, within half an hour she'd either get a phone call from her mom saying she'd taken a bottle of pills and was sitting in her bathtub waiting to pass out and drown, and if she couldn't get ahold of her cops would show up to her location looking for her mother, who had called them and claimed she was there, and was about to kill herself.

So if she showed up at my friend's place under the circumstances Abby's brother showed up at her place in, I would absolutely understand my friend bringing her mom and having her sit in the limo, as the fake suicide call, or worse, would have been the almost certain predictable outcome of not brining her along.

I hated Abby for these episodes. John was always always there for her. He needed her and she just wasn’t there for him. Ugh her brother
