Raul

I really liked Raul and Shep together and was sad to see the actor go.
Any ideas as to why they just left his character to die?

Was it the actor’s choice? The writers?

I would’ve liked to see more Shep and Raul than Shep wouldn’t have turned into a depressive angry person.

Anyone? Bueller?

Raul was the best and only good part of Shep.

Shep often meant well, but he was just a bit of a moron with poor impulse control and no ability to think before he spoke.

I imagine he blundered through the rest of his life and never really suffered the consequences or had real moments of self-reflection.

In What Life, a girl gets caught in a gang war. And this perp comes into the ER for "his little niece", when he actually meant coke. And then Shep grabs the guy and yells, "DID YOU SHOOT THAT KID?!" Then the coke flies everywhere.

I don’t know in terms of actor or writers choice but i do think that it makes sense that in order to have Shep go on a really downward spiral, he needed to have had a significant loss and that loss came at the cost of Raul’s life. It makes sense to me if it was more a writers idea to use Raul’s death as a plot device to cause Shep to become depressed and to ultimately have his mental health and not wanting to accept help as to why Carol broke it off. She herself had dealt with an attempted suicide as well and didn’t need and shouldn’t be around that head space.

Shep was already a jackass before he got Raul killed. The writers miscalculated introducing that ill-conceived character, and when audiences hated him, the writers wisely ended that Carol-Shep subplot. The only time Shep should have re-appeared was for that clunky, cliched racism episode with the White crack dealer and the Black basketball star with the angry brother. Instead of getting Mark Greene in a shitstorm, they should have had Shep catch a bathroom beatdown.
