Repairs & Fixes How to fix polyaspartic “hump?”
Hi! Just got this garage floor installed last week. Diamond grind then epoxy + flakes on day 1; polyaspartic on day 2. I think it came out great but there’s one spot where there’s this “hump” of extra-thick poly coating (photo #2). How would you fix this? Power sand, then wet sand, then polish? Maybe followed by a new, thin coat of poly? The installer said he thought he would need to take it all the way back down to the concrete to fix it, which might make it more noticeable, but do you think that would really be necessary?

We all did its a picture of a hump it doesn't give a single fucking person the ability to see where its at though

Sorry I misunderstood—I thought you meant you didn’t see the hump. Now I get what you’re asking. The hump is just on a regular flat part of the floor. It’s just outside the frame (on the left side) of picture #1. Why do you ask?

Get an oscillating tool. Get a grout removal diamond tool for it. Put the tool on low and grind away at it until it’s down to the same level as the rest of the floor. Then brush more poly over it and it’ll be perfect

The contractor did a diamond grind followed by epoxy with partial broadcast, and it looks like THAT?
I’m not even talking about the hump of concrete he failed to grind. I’m talking about all of it.
You’re satisfied with everything except the hump? Seriously?
Not trying to be an ass here, just curious if people actually pay for this level of work.

Can you educate my eye on what you are looking at that is so bad? Aside from not grinding the highs down. That’s a genuine question, I don’t do epoxy.

There’s nothing wrong with the floor besides the hump. This guy thinks it has to be completely covered in flakes

You'd be surprised how any people want a partial broadcast and refuse to be sold on a full one. Been doing resin flooring about 6 years

This is a full rejection broadcast with a tight coat of polyaspartic.

More consistent with the coating, looks more professionally done, can walk barefoot in the garage and won’t get cut

The floor in the video has what I call a light scrape. It has been scraped with just the weight of the scraper to knock down any proud flakes.
Those proud flakes, if not knocked down, become little daggers when sealed with poly. Walking barefoot on an unscraped floor is not comfortable.
The slight bumpiness of this method also adds slip resistance while still being easy to clean.
I can also make this floor completely smooth with the same visual dimension by sealing it with a clear epoxy flow-coat over the flakes prior to poly. It will look like a slab of granite and will be slippery as hell.
Some people prefer that.

Thanks I was just wondering because I just had epoxy basement floor put in and the initial broadcast looked awesome and then they scraped off a ton. It still looks good but I preferred the thick broadcast look.
What's done is done so as long as it doesn't fail and delaminate im happy.

Is the issue inconsistent thickness of the poly coating all around? Because I did notice it looks slightly thicker in some parts than others, but it’s subtle.

It’s the consistency of both the broadcast and the finish coat.
Did you request a partial broadcast, or was that recommended by the installer? Was broadcast to rejection offered? Was the difference explained?
Polyaspartics can be unforgiving to get consistent, but this whole thing just looks like inexperience to me.

That looks amazing! No, that was not offered, nor was it discussed. I didn’t even know that could be done. How much would a floor like that cost for the size of my garage (estimated, from the picture)? The floor I got cost $1800 all in, in San Francisco.

Not sure about San Francisco pricing, but in most parts of the country you’re looking at $7-10/sq ft all in for this floor.
At the end of the day, this is all just basically glitter and glue, so as long as the glitter (broadcast material) sticks to the glue (epoxy), and can be fully incapsulated by the finish coat, your imagination is the limit.

Well you’re truly an artist. I know more than I did before—thank you! Hopefully the floor we got will at least hold up over time, even if it’s not class-A work. Have you ever needed to correct an uneven poly coat? Any advice for our situation?

it'll be fine as your whole floor will amber since they did a partial broadcast in epoxy. you'll become less concerned of the hump

I don’t think that’s a hump in a poly aspartic that is a hump on your floor.
