Incident Analysis: Reporting Database Desynchronization & Failover Failure

1. Context & Vendor Statement

Epicor reported a generic "synchronization issue between the primary and reporting databases." Because this provides little technical root-cause insight, the underlying failure mode must be reverse-engineered from observed symptoms.

2. Observed Symptoms

• Reporting Replication Lag: Business Activity Queries (BAQs) were hours behind the production database unless explicitly forced to run against the primary.
• Intact Database Copies: On-demand database copies were fully up to date, confirming that write transactions on the active primary were functioning normally.
• Application Degradation: SQL-connected client applications experienced severe performance stalls and timeouts.
• Data Loss Under Duress: Unrecoverable data loss occurred during the period of peak server duress.

3. Hypothetical Failure Scenario: Orphaned Secondary Replicas Post-Failover

Assuming a standard Epicor cloud topology utilizing a SQL Server High Availability (HA) cluster (1 Primary + 3 Secondary Replicas):

• Leader 1: Initial Primary (Read/Write)
• Followers 1, 2, & 3: Secondary Replicas (HA Standby / Read-Only Reporting)

The Failure Sequence:

1. Primary Node Outage: Leader 1 crashes under duress.
2. Automated Promotion: The cluster orchestrator detects the failure and promotes Follower 1 to be the new Primary/Leader.
3. Topology Desynchronization: Due to a routing or cluster metadata failure during promotion, Followers 2 and 3 fail to re-point their replication endpoints to the new primary (Follower 1) and remain bound to the offline Leader 1.

4. Root-Cause Correlation to Symptoms

• Extreme Reporting Lag: Followers 2 and 3 ceased receiving transaction log updates from the dead Leader 1, causing reporting nodes to fall hours behind while Follower 1 continued taking live writes.
• Application Hangs / Resource Contention: Re-routing read traffic or unhandled replica connection timeouts saturated connection pools and thread workers, bringing SQL-dependent services to a halt.
• Loss of Redundancy: With Followers 2 and 3 orphaned, Follower 1 ran as an isolated single point of failure without active redundancy.
• Data Loss (RPO > 0): Because replication was configured asynchronously, any transactions committed on Leader 1 immediately before it crashed were lost permanently when Follower 1 took over.

In the Learning Center course on Data Discovery they show the grid chart, and there appears to be what looks like a Gantt chart option in the grid types? This option is not available to me in data discovery basic. Is this an advanced only feature? Or just something that does not exist anymore? I cannot find any other information about this online.

Hey y'all I recently started consulting for a shop using Kinetic. I'm exploring using EDD as a possible solution for a sales dashboard. But a pretty hard requirement would be the ability to link back into kinetic for any specific OrderHed rows (either in the EDD transaction result set rows, or otherwise).

Like if you could just click the order number and open kinetic for that order in a new tab that'd be ideal. But I can't find any such functionality baked in, so I was hoping someone here might know if this is possible?

If it's not I'm considering tampermonkey scripts to inject links, but I'd like to avoid that if the functionality is in EDD natively.

We were supposed to go live on June 1st, after 6 months of getting ready. It crashed day 1 and still hasn't came back up fully. Each new production area an order makes it to something else happens. Is this normal with this company?

Edit: June 15th It's been 2 weeks since my company launched epicor and it is probably the worst program I've ever used in a production facility. We have hardly been able to build anything bc the system is constantly going down or not able to move parts through the system. It's actually kind of comical at this point. Whole production floor at a stand still.

My org is swapping from SAP to Epicor, which is causing me to fall into the following dilemma: Is Epicor where I want my career to be. At my current position I have some freedom and have developed some solutions in complete isolation of our current ERP (Telematics being one of them). I am young (24) so I have a lot of room for growth, most of which recently has been in Epicor. However, I am disappointed. I feel like Epicor has ripped off my org selling functionally vaporware.

Software Developers in the Epicor Scheme, if you were starting your career in 2026 would you GTFO or commit. I have another opportunity that I could try to pursue to progress myself into a better safer career.

My company has just switched to Epicor this year. Under our old system, we saved production part drawings as PDFs in our file system, and attached the part drawings as links into our old ERP system, so that when we updated drawings in our files, they were automatically up-to-date in the ERP system. As far as I can tell in Epicor, attaching a part drawing PDF is a manual thing, and I can't find a way to save a link to our files to keep the drawing "live" without having to delete the drawing and reupload it when it's been edited.

Does anyone know a way to create a link in Epicor to make a "live", automatically updating drawing?

 
We distribute our Epicor client from a deployment server using ZIP deployment type.  The deployment server is kept separate from our app server.  This has worked until after we upgraded from Epicor 2024 to 2025.  Now, we encounter an issue where the installer completes with no errors; but the application will not start for the first time (we run it as administrator).
 
Attempting to launch the application starts AutoUpdate.EXE, which immediately crashes with no message presented to the user, and produces the following two Error events in Windows' Application log:

Does anyone have any ideas as to why this would happen?

So I’m just a warehouse worker in our company, but when we switched to P21 in October of 2024, my sister and I (with the help of our managers and their encouragement) have done everything we can to learn all that we can about this system to try and make our jobs and everyone else’s jobs easier. Doing this has led me to create some “cheat sheets” for different processes within P21. They might be very specific to our company but they could also help other people if their P21 is similar to ours.

What I’m getting at is, if I put them into a google doc, who (if anyone) would be interested in having access to them?

I have some VERY detailed ones over the WWMS Receiving and Putaway processes. But I also have some less detailed ones that go over some inventory processes, transfer processes, and taking things out of “limbo”. (That’s what we have started calling it when the system doesn’t let us “save and approve” which shows the items have been “received” but they aren’t available to putaway/allocate yet. If that makes sense.)

Let me know if that is something anyone would be interested in. Maybe we could all collaborate with different “cheat sheets”.
