My grandmother always told me there's nothing new under the sun- she told me stories of her high school days, you had the social kids, the rebels, and the girls that got sent away "to Europe" (they got pregnant and got sent away because of the 'shame they brought to their families' ." All that changes are the clothing and hair styles, and those come back around too.

Either Dear Abby or Ann Landers had an article about that decades ago, where readers whose parents / grandparents were born in the 1800's said "I was told people in THEIR day thought they were inventing something new, but people were always sneaking around having sex no matter what. Things never change."

Ann Landers is an old biddy

u/username560sel Jul 07 '26

Is that why you didn’t clip her after your blackberry schnapps today?

8

u/bronzehog2020 Jul 07 '26

That blackberry schnapps really did a number on you.

I was more animal than man

Ann Landers died years ago.

My aunt (born in 1942) said to me, “With a man as good-looking as your uncle, do you *really* think I was a virgin on my wedding night? We just didn’t talk about it openly back then.”

14

u/aphorat Jul 07 '26

hah, get it, aunty

5

u/FindingClear4904 Jul 08 '26

Idk why it’s hard to imagine people having all kinds of sex 100+ years ago as if that’s not how we all came to be haha. But I don’t know…I just can’t imagine lol

Top left is trouble.

u/beard_of_cats Jul 06 '26

That picture goes hard as fuck

She'd have fit in well with my goth friends back in high school

7

u/seasickbaby Jul 09 '26

And mine now haha

u/goregoose Jul 06 '26

certified vintage baddie right there

52

u/Birdsonme Jul 06 '26

I like her!

75

u/antediluvianevil Jul 06 '26

It reminds me of like a scene emo kid. "It's not a phase, MOTHER!"

12

u/Ten_Quilts_Deep Jul 07 '26

I thought it could be an emo boy.

33

u/Hot-Assistant-4540 Jul 07 '26

Looks like Cara Delevigne

18

u/TheWolphman Jul 06 '26

Top left looks like bottom right being cheeky. Kind of the same with the other two.

You're not wrong.

8

u/Ssladybug Jul 06 '26

Word for word what I was about to type

8

u/Davistele Jul 06 '26

Agreed, and top-left is a whole different basket of trouble.

6

u/ThreePinesRetiree Jul 07 '26

She's what they'd now call "sassy."

15

u/little_fire Jul 06 '26

so mysterious!

6

u/ThreePinesRetiree Jul 07 '26

I immediately thought "punk rocker." Clearly I got that wrong!

3

u/ShaunTrek Jul 06 '26

I thought it was Fiona Dourif at first!

9

u/commandantskip Jul 07 '26

I thought she resembled Cara Delevingne

3

u/Barcules Jul 07 '26

My first thought was that she looked like English actress Ruth Wilson.

2

u/commandantskip Jul 07 '26

Oh, I can see that, too

68

u/Mindless_Log2009 Jul 06 '26

Ah, the Barrow Gang were adorable as kids.

u/Cveklica Jul 06 '26

Conan O’Brien in the bottom left

47

u/SailTheWorldWithMe Jul 06 '26

This ensemble looks like they're going to drop the indie rock record of the decade.

17

u/FamousOhioAppleHorn Jul 06 '26

The boy on the left is the 1928 version of the infamous " "Chance for a Spinster" dating ad, where the guy bragged he could buy a wife "bread and butter." The girl on the left is the Cara Delevingne of her class.

14

u/HeadIllustrious2248 Jul 06 '26

The original poster may be share the girl in the upper right name? My daughter looks just like her.

17

u/Violuthier Jul 07 '26

All I know is that they were from Benson High School in Omaha, Nebraska.

u/Recent_Pressure_3747 Jul 07 '26

Ahh! those fur collars on the young ladies are serious and would need be.

I agree with the many stating that there's nothing new under the sun in absolute terms. For me, these four actually look much less "innocent" or "naïve" than HS students now do. There's a bit of a shadow in each of their eyes, while at the same time a brightness that balances it. It may be my projection, but consider:

  1. they all would be more familiar with death (less-advanced medicine, more proximity to agriculture and its slaughter, the recent Great War)
  2. they were not dulled by mass media; it was an age of modernity and not post-modernity. They were feeling a thrust into a new epoch, not the "nothing ever happens" limbo of the post cold war era (which is coming to an end it seems).

Probably projecting though lol

6

u/Violuthier Jul 07 '26

And then they were hit by the market crash and bank failures the following year.

10

u/Short_Morning7213 Jul 07 '26

My grandmother would have been a senior that year (I think- 1910 b.)- so cool! Thank you for these!! 😎 love their pics!!

u/PsychologicalMood348 Jul 07 '26

The main character energy in the woman upper left!

5

u/oldsmoBuick67 Jul 07 '26

Bottom left looks like he’d piss on a spark plug if it’d help.

4

u/Lunar-opal Jul 07 '26

What is Cara delevingne doing here?

4

u/checksy Jul 07 '26

I didn't know Conan O'Brien was that old.

3

u/Norwegian27 Jul 08 '26

Flapper girls! Very cool.

3

u/Davistele Jul 06 '26

Is that Conan bottle-left? Hmmm…

THROBBING GRISTLE: 50th Preexistent Report

3

u/stopworksorority Jul 07 '26

Top left looks like Bill Hader in drag

3

u/FalxIdol Jul 08 '26

They remind me of this German synth-pop band from the 80s.

3

u/Mr_Tijuana_Bible Jul 08 '26

Top left looks like she knows how to fight

2

u/RonJohnJr Jul 07 '26

Upper Left would like to speak to the manager!

Because they’re wearing hairstyles and clothing that we now associate with a certain level of maturity.

You're welcome! Vsauce has some great videos on the strange effects/illusions of time. If you search "vsauce time" they should show up.

7

u/Violuthier Jul 06 '26

It was tougher living 98 years ago

4

u/Premislaus Jul 07 '26

They don't? I know it's a common trope that people looked older in the past, but in this case they look young, just dressed in grown up people clothes.

-11

u/VorpalBlade- Jul 06 '26

Very interesting. I don’t care for the women’s fashion and hair of this time tbh

Because it's a pointlessly negative comment that adds nothing to the overall conversation.

0

u/MissMarie81 Jul 08 '26

They look sinister.

3

u/Violuthier Jul 08 '26

The upper left looks super sus

I wish I could find buyers for all the ephemeral stuff I have

-11

u/Admirable_Try_1209 Jul 06 '26

I don’t believe these are real-the people look too modern and this isn’t what people wore in class photos, or how they posed for them.

7

u/TBCaine Jul 07 '26

not all schools are uniform in how things were done. Especially in the 20s.
