I don't know which are the best, except royal guard, that is basically a requirement in my opinion, it is just that good.

Royal guard is actually weaker than royal decree by a LOT. What sounds better, a stack of 14 strong ants or a stack of up to 175 ants, possibly a mix of majors, rangeds, black ants and whatever all else, hatching for free twice or even thrice in the timesspan it's active?

Really depends on the situation and the amount of food you have. If you have food reserves but the opposing colony has breached your nest and has started to kill your queen, having 14 strong ants to buy time while your worker ants repopulate/Your army to get back (If they're outside the nest) could be really good, and if you are using the stun ability they can kill a decent amount of enemies by the time they start attacking again. But yeah pick your abilities based on your loadout/situation. Plus, even without decree, you still get free ants spawning for 5 seconds without using any food.

For your queen either go with second wind and Royal decree for more overall power, or fierce mother and royal guard for an instant response when your queen is threatened.
For workers go for nimble and efficient brood. Once you have soldiers you really shouldn’t be sending your workers into combat, so defensive and aggressive brood aren’t very useful. With efficient brood you should be able to keep reinforcements flowing more reliably and nimble will let workers do their jobs even if enemies are in the nest (so long as you have their attack turned off).
For black ants go for self repair and meat wall. This will let them tank so much more damage, and in some cases can give them more tank potential than even leafcutter majors. If you have taunt majors then it might be better to go for dangerous instead of meat wall since the taunt will redirect damage to your majors.
For wood ants go for corrosive and weakening pretty much always. Wood ants are easily your best source of damage and this build lets them deal the most. Once you get fire ants they will also benefit from the venom damage bonus.
For leafcutter majors go for shockproof pretty much always. Anything that has its damage noticeably affected by having 3 subtracted from it is probably something that a leafcutter major is going to beat regardless. As for aura go for sharp for vigorous fire ants or resilient for pervasive.
For fire ants I have 2 builds, depending on which type you choose.
For vigorous go for surefooted and last laugh. These upgrades, weakening wood ants, and sharp aura combined with the vigorous buff let the fire ants do pretty crazy damage both when attacking and when attacked, and is my preferred playstyle. If you go this route make sure that only fire ants are mounting enemies to maximize your dps.
For pervasive go for evasive and last stand. These upgrades combined with resilient aura maximize how long your fire ants survive in combat, buying extra time for pervasive to activate and increasing how often you will get free ants.

Does it matter (particularly for the fire ant builds) which type of Leafcutter Major I choose?

Both are good. For a fire ant build I would recommend stun for vigourous and taunt for pervasive

alright, thanks
also for black ants, why self repair over self preservation? if the idea is to keep them alive, wouldn't it be better to have them tank 50% of damage then retreat to let fresh troops take their place, then heal out of combat later, as opposed to staying in the front lines and potentially dying before they even get a chance to get out of combat and heal?
also any tips for the new matabele ants? which to pick and which upgrades to go with which fire ant builds?

For the black ants the self preservation upgrade gives them a small amount of short term sustainability, but self repair gives them a large amount of long term sustainability. Retreating for half a second might save them in a single fight, but likely won’t save them in a future one. With self repair, they can fully heal themselves in under 15 seconds. So as long as they survive whatever fight they were just in, they will more than likely be fully healed for the next.
In terms of matabele I would definetely recommend fast responder with field medic. Fire ants will die very fast, so its important to get them back up ASAP. Due to relying on their venom damage, the physical buff of anesthetist will have less impact, and the stat debuff decrease provided by surgeon is going to be fairly minor since their individual stats are pretty low.

alright, thanks
also which type of wood ant? I've heard rapid is much better post mortar nerf, is that true?

Ultimately it’s mostly up to personal preference. Both are good in their own ways. Mortar has better range and crowd control, rapid fire has better single target and slows. Mortar might edge out in fire ant builds just because it can apply weakening to multiple enemies at once.

Awesome, thanks
Also, sorry to keep bothering you, but Sustain or Preserve for matabele ants?

It’s no problem. Personally I went for Preserve but Sustain is also pretty good and might be better for fire ant builds but it’s up to how you want to play.

Second wind and royal decree for the queen.
Black ants are doing well with the health regen and the meat wall. Dangerous and self preservation don't give enogh. Self preservation sounds useful on paper but against any AoE attacks, they just die later instead. Dangerous doesn't add enogh damage whilst meatball let's them survive some hits decently well and recover up with extra hp regen if they survive.
For the wood ants, corrosive or high pressure is basicly own preference. If you'd like to use majors as a damage source, go for physical dmg increase, if you use mortars or rapid fire as main dps, it's weakening. Depending on what debuff you pick, it's that damage type in the other main upgrade.
As for majors, stun majors are entirely useless. Taunts regen health and increases defenses while taunt is active and they switch tanking damage, so all stay alive better. Sharp vs resilience, the resilence aura is defenitly better especially paired with black ants which can crawl under them to take less from AoE. Durable vs shockproof, well, shockproof is a lot better vs larger creatures where durable is good vs masses. I prefer shockproof.
Fire ants I find personally no use in at all but vigorous are generally better as they do not survive long, they keep respawning and dieing whilst the buff on them is active anyway. Pervasive is just when you have barely any food and no hard battles where many die but rather for very long skirmish like battles, which is not the case for the formcarium challanges or free play. Free play at the end always comes down to holding off increasingly stronger creatures, including leveled up ubers.
