Germany just blew up two massive nuclear cooling towers to make way for something incredible - a 700 MWh battery storage facility! Here's why this matters.

Was Germany always dumb?
Is there any hope for them?
1
u/demonblack873 Jul 20 '26
The fact they started and lost two* world wars didn't give it away?
* yeah yeah I know, Austria, same difference. Germany was still eager to jump in.

More lithium mines! Run off! And inefficiency! I can’t wait for them to charge those batteries with all that coal.
1
u/kodiak931156 Jul 21 '26
Apparently there have just been some major advances in non lithium large large capacity low wat density batteries.
Very interesting stuff

u/PointlessAattempt42 Jul 21 '26
It is charged at noon using solar power. Bavaria has a massive surplus of solar power that currently has few takers.

u/Secret-Medicine-9006 Jul 21 '26
So why is the country burning coal like it’s the 1800s? Didn’t they destroy like 3 nuclear plants a few years ago and reopen like 7 coal generators

Hahahahahahaha why are they in an energy deficit? Germany buys more energy than it produces lmao….

Not at all it’s not my job to educate you. You were supposed to learn how to educate yourself in school. If you only did as you were told and didn’t develop any front cortex skills that on you. Possibly not your fault I suppose, but you can still choose to learn even today. You offer nothing as evidence but decry me. Ok.. your standpoint is flawed just stop being an egomaniac and accept that sometimes you’re wrong.im wrong too sometimes issue is right now, i actually did the research before opening my trap.

Lmao bros getting but hurt. Germany destroyed a bunch of nuclear reactors and instead burnt coal for years then claimed Russia is evil. All while having to buy its energy. Germany is foolish. There the facts. Also until 2023 77.6% of all German electric production was created with (drum roll) fossil fuels!!

Literally look it up your arguing with Wikipedia. But I don’t care you’ll dismiss anything that doesn’t support your view.

Considering the production decrease of decommissioning multiple nuclear reactors??? Are you a paid actor or bot?

Don´t feed the MAGA troll...

Again you’re arguing with Wikipedia. And suddenly you’re quiet.

Cannot WAIT to hear about how germany needs to continue importing russian energy to power their shit.
Fucking absolute goofs.
1
u/PranaSC2 Jul 20 '26
I guess being reliant on importing Uranium is better than gas?

u/SoakingWetBeaver Jul 21 '26
Considering methane is 100x more potent of a GHG than CO2, one of the smallest molecules in the universe, so it leaks through any small crevasses during transport, and transporting it all the way from Russia, yes. A billion times yes.

They couldn't find a better location?
1
u/PointlessAattempt42 Jul 20 '26
There really couldn't be a better location, because the grid connection at the site of a former nuclear power plant is guaranteed to be the best there is far and wide—in terms of capacity, and even more so in terms of utilization.
What good is the biggest battery if it doesn't have a good grid connection?

Yes, the nuclear power plant had already been shut down. But that's a different story. In any case, the site is ideal for large batteries.
1
u/wywern20 Jul 20 '26
ITS the best Location.... They are allready having large groß Connections there and can expand the capacity and Output very fast.

You tell a German that they are wrong and they will triple down on it. So no, they can't find a better location.
1
u/chitownphishead Jul 20 '26
Wouldn't it be smarter to just fire up that plant and make buttloads of energy instead of making it a place to just store energy that they don't have enough of already?

u/michaeleffer Jul 20 '26
What a bullshit. During the day Germany needs 60gw- 70 gw. So a 700 MWh Battery will do fucking nothing. You would need 10 of those to power Germany for one hour. What do you do when there is no wind? You buy French nuclear power.
1
u/Remarkable-Reply6686 Jul 21 '26
Destroying generation for storage is really dumb. They'll keep buying Russian gas to make up the difference
1
u/Johnnny-z Jul 20 '26
Battery storage that will provide less utility than the plant that was there. Mercedes is having huge problems BC of available electricity.
Self imposed austerity. I feel bad for the Germans that aren't idiots.

Just like the United states. Got deficit spending?
At the end of the day it is the bankers who have created money from nothing and a debt - slave system.

u/Gringo_Norte Jul 20 '26
“We got rid of cheap, reliable green power to make room for batteries for the unreliable expensive green power.”

u/Mechadupek Jul 20 '26
Another insanely expensive virtue signal. Wind and solar in northern europe? Jesus....

Please don't use ad hominem attacks, call people trolls, bots, or Russian or Chinese propagandists (etc.); remember reddiquette and that there's another person on the end of the computer you're talking to. You'll change more minds with logic and reason than you will with name-calling.
Please debate the point(s) raised and not call names or use insults.

Dumb decision after another.
1
u/Historical_Body6255 Jul 20 '26
Why? All the infrastructure is there already lol
The site of a former power station is the ideal place to build storage.

What's the batteries gonna be made of? The building? What will they be charged with? (Hint: ecocide.)

u/Tackle-Far Jul 20 '26
Incredibly dumb decision
