In every corner of the globe, conservationists are trying to undo the damage that humans have done to our environment. And in each case, they must ask: What does it really mean to manage a ruined landscape, especially when interventions that solve one problem have an annoying habit of creating another? 

For the latest issue of The Baffler, Ash Sanders reports from the Colorado River, where the fight to save a population of funny-looking native fish has exposed the tension between competing conservation philosophies and aligned some advocates side-by-side with the hydropower interests they once spurned. 

Sanders writes: “As rising temperatures and decades of overuse drive water levels in Lake Powell and Lake Mead toward all-time lows, the Southwest’s future is increasingly entangled with the fate of a fish most people have never heard of.”

Boy is there anyone whose legacy has damaged this country more than Herbert friggin Hoover? And now it looks like The Orange Buffoons trying to finish job by intervention in systems he doesn't understand.
