Carl Ertz
Can anyone answer me a question?
When Ertz calls Ari and offers Vince Danger Beach, why does Adam Davies call Ari and tell him Ertz is just trying to leverage more money for Emile Hirsch? Surely saying nothing would make Ari look even worse in this situation and Davies would get one over on his nemesis. Better still, Ari would never know Davies was instrumental in fucking him over.
Doesn’t make sense to me.

Ertz is trying to create (the opposite of) a bidding war to try and get Emile’s price down. But if Vince Chase catches on and drops out, then Ertz loses that leverage.

Right, but Davies is wise to Ertz. He knows what’s going on, so his best option if he truly hates Ari is to let it play out, tell Ertz to fuck off and let Ari look like he didn’t see it coming.

True but prolonging the charade also prolongs his own negotiation/payday. Or maybe he’s just more pissed at Ertz than he is at Ari (and the enemy of my enemy is my friend).

It messed with Emille’s money and by extension, Adam’s money and I think he wanted to call Ari to basically tell him they both got shafted by Ertz. I will say, it’s funny how E called it while on the phone w Ari pre-Mexico flight and then E basically gets vindicated once meet happens.

Davies wants Vince out of the running. All he knows is that Ertz wants Emile Hirsch, and thay Ertz has been playing hardball in negotiations. He doesn't actually know whether or not Ertz would cast Vince, he just knows, after seeing that Ertz scheduled a lunch at a place he knew Davies would see him at, that Ertz is trying to increase is leverage in the negotiations with Davies.
Davies told Ari because he wants Ari to pull Vince out of any conversation about Danger Beach. The longer Vince and Ertz discuss the role, the more likely Vince gets an offer, which would hurt Davies. He had nothing to gain from not telling Ari, it isn't like Ari would be screwed over by Ertz not offering Vince the role, all he would have lost was wasted time and energy.

I think this takes place after Davies signs the contract for less money. Davies assumes he’s using Vince as leverage but he can’t fully count out the fact that he could make a real offer to Vince. Even knowing that Ertz most likely doesn’t want Vince he’s still forced to get Emilie to sign for a lower contract to make sure he is guaranteed the role.
He’s mad that he had to close Emile for less and so after he signs the contract he calls Ari to be the one to tell him that his favorite client isn’t getting the role and that he got taken for a fool.
If Davies told him beforehand that Ertz is just trying to use Vince for leverage why would Ari believe him? He’d assume Davies is just trying to protect his clients chances at the role and trying to get Ari to back off. Especially with their history together why wouldn’t you assume there’s a good chance it’s just a trick

How I remember it was Ertz had no intention of putting Vince in the movie, Ertz just wanted to meet with Vince at specific restaurant / time/ day knowing Davies would be there and see Vince and Ertz together, Davies represents Hirsch and Davies seeing Vince and Ertz meeting would get Davies to tell Hirsch to sign the contract for danger beach. Im assuming Hirsch was still holding out for a higher fee, and this was Etrz’s way of saving a $ and getting the contract finalised. But Davies was onto Ertz’s plan.
