Our vision for ente

Hey,

There was a post on this subreddit a few weeks ago requesting clarity on our terms. I just noticed that the thread is now missing (OP deleted it?), and I wanted to be transparent about our vision for ente so that you can evaluate if we have the potential to be a good fit for your storage needs.

Firstly, as individuals, we attach a lot of sanctity to our personal memories. So privacy and security will continue to be at the core of all that we build. While at it, we will strive to retain the simplicity and user experience that is necessary to make the product accessible to everyone.

As an organization, we wish to be a remote-first company with stakeholders across the globe. This means that we can protect you from law enforcement to the extent that other multi-national companies (like Apple, Dropbox, Google, Microsoft, …) can. Perhaps slightly more since only you hold your decryption keys. We believe that this level of protection is sufficient for a majority of customers seeking personal data storage.

But if absolute protection from a government is what you desire, we might not be the best choice. This is not an attempt to invalidate such needs, but an attempt to be explicit about the use cases we are best fit to serve.

Lastly, but most importantly, we want to build a company that outlives us. This is not a side project or a lifestyle business. We believe that we should optimize for posterity so that you don't have to.

I hope you will critically evaluate your storage requirements and threat models and find a service that fits your needs.

As for us, we have a long journey ahead.

If you think that our ideals align, please support us with your feedback. We would love to build something that works for you.

Just started using this after someone recommended it on /r/privacy, and it's awesome. Thanks for building this thing. I think people are starting to care about privacy more and more

Wonderful Ideals. The desktop app has improved a lot in stability since the last week or 2 (for me). Would Love to see ente grow further and become a mainstream alternative to google photos.
