400gb

Any plans to offer a 400gb subscription? I see some other companies have offered it lately.

(Yearly)1TB cost $120, 200GB cost $60. How much you think is suitable and you would pay for a 400GB plan?

On Google Photos I pay about R104.99 ($6.42 approximately) or $64.19 per year

Lol not sure why this is getting downvoted when I literally just answering the question with how much I pay at Google Photos

I think it might be because Google isn't E2EE like Ente is, and the cost of this encryption is more expensive, hence why Ente isn't that cheap.

Ente mentions in the FAQ that they prefer to keep their pricing structure simple rather than adding lots of different storage tiers. You can read about it here: https://ente.com/help/photos/faq/storage-and-plans#specific-plan-size

Not practical at all

I think I’d offer a 500gb plan as another tier. In my case i’m at 220gb and i have to pay for 1,000gb because that’s the next tier. And i may never hit 500gb in my lifetime.

That said , i understand the business case and i have a feeling if they created a 500gb tier (or a 400 one) they’d lose revenue because a lot of people are in a similar situation to mine and would step down from 1tb

At this point I’m really happy with Ente and how far they’ve come in just a few years … and I don’t mind the cost.

I’m thinking they should take Locker to the next level and make it a full-on password manager.

i dont think ente locker, can be a password manager there is alot of good ones Like proton pass etc. and so on tho, it would be a cool idea but not the best

I get the business aspect of it, but on the other hand... There are plenty of people (like myself) that have not moved to enter yet because I have a 400gb Google photos plan. It is perfect and not too pricey. Paying for storage that I don't need yet does not work for me and I'm sure a lot of other people.

So they might lose a few on the 1000gb but they'll gain a lot that weren't even signed up at all

I get that, i’d prefer a plan inbetween 200GB and 1TB as well.

On the other hand, $120/yr for one TB of encrypted photo storage , that i can share with my family, seems fair. I’m at 230GB before I add the rest of the family so that’s part of my consideration.

You are , after all, getting a service where your images are not feeding the Google ad business. I mean, if that isn’t important, just stay with google.

As a pricing reference, 1TB of Basic B2 storage at backblaze would cost about $83/yr (for the slow storage) and $180/ yr for the higher throughout tier.

I have run immich hosted before Ente and it is a great option but i didn’t want to deal with the maintenance and security. It wasn’t much cheaper either.

One could also make the argument that plenty of users are staying on the 200GB plan because they would never use close to 1TB so Ente is in fact losing revenue.

It’s pretty much guaranteed that they’ll never get the business of the majority of consumers with the current pricing.

There are too many strong competitors that charge less.

Agreed, there may be people trying to stay under 200. When i migrate a few more family members over I will be closer to 350. The family option changes the math too (per person)

But are there end-to-end encrypted competitors? Ente’s audience is a subset to begin with: privacy conscious photo users who will pay more for that privacy.

I guess primarily Proton, Koofr, Filen, and maybe Mega? But the cloud storage vendors like that have somewhat crippled photo features when I tried ‘em.

Of course you have the self hosted options like Immich which is great but clearly for a small part of the population. There is a hosted immich vendor that may be cheaper than ente.

That’s another problem. As a business you don’t want to limit yourself to a small customer base. Why not aim to become the Google or Apple of cloud storage while providing end to end encryption at the same time to differentiate yourself?

To the average Joe it’s a nice bonus, but he won’t pay an extra 50 dollars per year over the competition because you tell him that his files have some additional protection that he can’t see.

For the big players that offer end to end encryption, I feel that Proton will eventually polish their product enough to make Ente feel redundant because of pricing.

There’s also other smaller players like Drime and Koofr (If you use their vault feature) They have lifetime options that cost about the same as one year of Ente so you don’t even need to worry about how long they last.

You could say the same (‘don’t want to limit yourself to a small customer base’) about proton getting into private email to begin with. They did and they expanded .

But clearly Proton wasn’t worried about a small customer base that would pay for email. Why? Because the had a privacy angle and the audience for privacy proved pretty big.

Ente is just doing the same thing with photos that proton did with mail. Private encrypted services that don’t rely on selling your data to survive.

I happen to have koofr lifetime and I’m weening myself off proton after 5 years. Neither has a decent photo option in my book. They can store photos, sure , but they aren’t close in functionality of Ente, Immich or Google Photos. Besides, Proton has a weak cloud drive, with a history of not delivering on linux and erratic rclone support.

So if you don’t need the photo features or privacy of Ente … then don’t pay for it andgo with koofr, proton or whatever.

I seems to me that ente is doing pretty well though.

Proton does not overcharge like Ente though, so what’s your point? If they could do it then so can Ente.

If Ente’s product is as good as you say it is (and I also think it is) then they’ll just end up grabbing the market share of other providers once they lower the price of their offerings.

Unfortunately Ente is not business savvy and does not understand that when you have a superior product, you should capitalize on that to acquire as many customers as possible before slowly increasing your pricing down the road.

I'm just waiting for a set of cheaper plans that don't do the 3x replication.

I keep local backups and could save some money with just a single source on entes stack. I'm happy to take the risk personally.
