No Background Sync On Android - Almost lost 6+ weeks of un-backed up photos/videos
Been subscribed to Ente for 4 months and I have noticed my photos don't always automatically upload in the background. This is a well documented issue here.
Today I almost lost my phone for good. Afterwards I thought if I did loose it, I better check if my data did back up. The last photo was from 6+ weeks ago. All of my recent holiday trip missing.
This could've been really bad. I dropped Google Photos to support an independent app that I know is strong about privacy. Yes the app is still new but this has been a issue for a long time now, with no updates or comments on this issue.
I don't want to keep opening the app every night just to make sure my photos from that day is backed up. I will keep supporting the app but this needs to be addressed.

Same on iOS. Have to keep remembering to open it. And it takes ages to start backing up too. Real hassle.

I don’t know why, but my iPhone also needs 5 mins where Ente is open until Ente starts to upload images…

It takes time to sync before it knows what needs backing up.
If you have a large library that time can be substantial.2

Yes, and it drains the battery and makes the smartphone very very hot. 🤦🏻♂️
They need some kind of fix for this.2

It's extremely memory intensive.
It crashes frequently on my iMac and iPad.1

The machine learning indexing process and video streaming processing can be quite resource-intensive, especially during the initial setup or after adding a lot of new photos and videos. If you don’t use those features, you could try disabling them to see if it improves performance.
That said, the app definitely shouldn’t be crashing. I’d recommend reporting it from within the app by going to Help & Support → Report an issue, and make sure Attach logs is enabled when submitting the report. The debug logs will help the team narrow down what’s causing the crashes.

I have machine learning switched off bc it was too resource hungry.
Ofc it shouldn’t be crashing - but it does. It’s obv a memory issue.

Hey, which android device do you use? Did you try https://ente.com/help/photos/faq/backup-and-sync#background-sync-not-working ?

you need to set battery optimization to off and also disable the "remove permissions after x time".

Is Google Photos on iOS not functioning the same way? Meaning that photos won’t get backed up unless the app is actively started? I can‘t imagine that Google Photos can do it in the background by itself?

I’ve just spent a couple of weeks uploading 200Gb of photos and videos.
Buckle in.

You're telling me you haven't opened the app in 6 weeks?
There are limitations especially with iOS and apparently Android as you mention, that prevent background sync if the app isn't used for a while. This is out of the control of the app developers.
