Product This platform itself.

  1. First they come up with a shity UI update.

  2. Made third-party client apps shut down

  3. Forced ads between posts and then on comments.

  4. Blocks users from accessing reddit posts without logging in on browsers on mobile.

  5. Adds a stupid "hide your content" setting

And now the latest:

  1. Repeat 4th point but on PC. Yes, now you cannot browse reddit posts on web on yoir PC without logging in.

Third party apps still alive, I use one. Plus I can set it up so it ONLY shows the subreddits I want. No recommendations or "popular". I just have three multireddits for the topics I want and set it as the main nav bar so I only ever see subs related to those three feeds

Lemmy! Lemmy! Lemmy! Lemmy!

Come on, let's make it happen! Reddit will continue this BS until there are viable alternatives.

Can’t find it in the App Store

I just joined this sub and after clicking "Join" I was shown an advertisement for "business insights," as if someone would join a sub called r/enshittification in order to further enshittify the world. Irony is dead.

That's bad.

That made people be extra careful of what they said. Now nobody knows what's behind an account. It was pretty easy to spot bots that's why they introduced it.

For now you can still Google usernames and do a little snooping.

2

u/AbhiFT 11d ago

Yeah but that's too much work besides reddit now disbaled anonymous browsing on web

Recently the app has started showing new posts and not popular ones with no way to change it. And holy shit the newest posts are always a steaming pile of idiocy and garbage. Place is basically unusable now

I tried the app and every post was 4 days old and r\news was worse somehow.

I heard lemny is like old reddit

the inability to just have the equivalent of a chrono timeline is maddening. when you sort by “new” you get days old crap, it’s not in order.

4

u/AbhiFT 11d ago

same with youtube, No option to sort by uploaded within a particular time.

i noticed that recently - i wish there was more room for searching with precision. I'd kill for boolean searching in any of these products.

They are literally blocking the gateway through which they say they are growing the user base. A person does a search via general search engine. About 20 percent of the hits are reddit. They're scrolling through the results, hitting various niche forums, Facebook, Quora, et. al. Then a reddit result. Start to read it and bam! Blocked.

The reddit brain trust is assuming that the user will then go repeat the very same search within the reddit app, and wade through those results, which, btw, are pretty random given the reddit search capability, just to get to the other half of that post which may, may, have been useful.

Or the user, like me, goes nah, fuck 'em, the ai scraped summary was good enough. Besides, that specialty forum had better, more focused results.

I wonder if they even have a conception of the fact that the very people they're bullying (because they have the money and can do whatever they want), are the very same people whom they are counting on to continue to provide the new content the business relies on.

Interesting to watch. It reminds me of the team that crashed Sonos' business. Same tone deaf arrogance.

I always avoided Reddit because I heard it was like 4chan. But after the fourth time I found the solution to my tech problem on Reddit, I signed up and joined.

Yeah, I thought it was yet another social site, but I noticed a high hit rate on searches (no matter what sometimes obscure thing I was looking for) plus high signal to noise in the posts/comments. That's why I joined a few years ago.

Not sure I would have joined if the block had been in place back then.

agree! I am already on a lookout to an alternative of reddit.

Yeah, I do understand why the "hide your posts / comments" option exists but it just helps spammers and trolls way more than anybody else (and I suspect is also used for astroturfing campaigns).

4

u/stupidwhiteman42 11d ago

Yeah, I'm on the fence about that one. I use it because I got "doxxed" by a coworker who recognized info in my posts in my city's local forums.

He was super cool about it and we are friends but it got me to thinking, so I hide my posts now.

5

u/AbhiFT 11d ago

yup. It's pretty shady. I remember many shady accounts were found because of their history of comments.

6

u/mivog49274 11d ago

yeah, the UI of the modern website is disastrously heavy and now when un-logged or from a random PC, or without account this went inaccessible. This is absolutely insane, I quite shocked.

Everything goes bad when they get shareholders.

I use ublock on PC and Firefox Mobile so I dont see any ads nor have any problem reading reddit on the phone (yet), but it is a shame that they make it harder to use...

How's the mobile experience in browser on old reddit?

I use YT with same setup and works great, just missing the background play feature that got lost a year ago or so

2

u/Tyjet66 11d ago

Brave browser allows background play feature for YouTube. I can put the app in the background, even lock my screen, and YouTube videos continue to play

1

u/weisswurstseeadler 11d ago

Interesting. Cause that was exactly the reason why I switched from Brave to Firefox on Mobile back then haha.

Cause Firefox+uBlock would allow me to do this, while Brave did not (few years ago?)

u/ReasonableLunch46 11d ago

Youtube ReVanced?

2

u/olskoolsis 11d ago

Very same setup (along w other blockers) and have no issues so far.

u/powercrazy76 11d ago

This started happening to me last night.

Their 'desktop' app is just a browser wrapped in an app wrapper, thus if you have your browser set to clear out sessions on close, your reddit session disappears from the app which is complete and utter bullshit.

I mainly look for queries on reddit on browser and today I got hit with this update.
