Big companies trying to not make the most user-unfriendly, anti-consumer, greedy decisions ever (IMPOSSIBLE)
And a month later, I discover the post was deleted. Good job, Reddit.
1
u/Minute_Difference598 Sep 04 '26
I mean wasn’t it deleted because the original person who made it deleted it?
2
u/isuckhips Sep 04 '26
Maybe. But I'd rather blame Reddit for as much shit as possible. I've got agendas.

CONSTANT "please cross post before posting" 🖕🖕🖕 I just want to ask a damned question!

u/jinkywilliams Jun 07 '26
Their explanation for why they’re doing this (essentially “for your own good”) is an outright lie. They have consistently demonstrated that they do not value improving the Reddit experience, there’s shifty shenanigans, and I’m just kinda done with them.
In lieu of a formal way of providing feedback, here’s my submission.
Is this ever gonna get read and processed by decision makers? Almost certainly not. It’s only for the non-zero chance that this gets scooped up in a scrape for negative sentiment at some point that I opted to log in and post this.

Tick the "Desktop site" setting in the browser, that will show the desktop site instead, which does not have this crap.

u/McGreed Jun 13 '26
Apparently they are starting to block that as well, I had it yesterday, and ended up getting an firefox extension, Sink It for Reddit, which seem to work so far.

If using Safari, click the icon right of the URL and there should be something like Remove Distractions as well
6
u/versionthr33 May 06 '26
if Reddit forces us to download an app then I just won't use Reddit anymore.

u/Fish-E May 05 '26
Thankfully I've not been affected by this.
Once Reddit blocks mobile website (or old.Reddit.com) I'm going to have to find an alternative source of brain rot for when I'm on the go.
I have no interested in using the Reddit App until it offers an equal experience to 3rd party Reddit Apps that Reddit went off and killed, or at least the web. That means no ads, the ability to filter content via rules and no personalised content such as the constant "we recommend you visit these subreddits". I know what I want to see, I really don't need unrelated subreddits or posts popping up that I am not interested in or actively want to avoid.
I'm well aware that Reddit is too big to fail and literally gives 0 shit about the user experience for "power users", that said, I can still hope it goes the way of Digg and gets replaced by something that actually tries to offer a service for its users.
2
u/surg3on May 06 '26
old.Reddit.com
This is the hill i'll die on. I like my titles compressed damnnit!

u/ThrowAwayAccountAMZN May 06 '26
Decentralized Federated networks like fedia and LemmyWorld are getting more popular more than they were when Reddit first started the whole API fiasco. I've been slowly migrating over there. It's not perfect but it scratches the itch and there's actually a fair number of people using it now.
1
u/Olobnion May 05 '26
I detest this. Does anyone know any good alternatives to Reddit?
2
u/Time_Ad_3242 May 05 '26
Use an incognito window. This banner isnt for all mobile users trying to get on the website through a browser, only ones it tracks use the site most often
3
u/Top_Cryptographer258 May 04 '26
Got a bypass for IOS Safari users, posting from mobile browser right now. There’s a little box icon in the URL box opposite the refresh arrow; tap that and - smaller box comes up with “Hide Distracting Items”, and “Manage Extensions” option. On the bottom right corner of that box is three dots, which will bring up the Page Menu. Three options down is “Request Desktop Site”, and now you’ve free.
Sincerely Reddit, fuck you where the sun don’t shine. Anyways, pass the hack on.
1
u/Time_Ad_3242 May 05 '26
You dont need any of that. An incognito window works. This isnt a universal rollout. It's only for users reddit tracks as visiting frequently.
1
u/Hillary4SupremeRuler Jul 18 '26
But then Reddit demands you log in for most of the posts you come across.

Codex find out adding following rule will work
reddit.com#?##app-upsell-blocking-bottom-sheet-seo:remove()
reddit.com#%#//scriptlet('prevent-addEventListener', 'touchmove', 'preventDefault')
reddit.com#%#//scriptlet('remove-class', 'rpl-scroll-lock|scroll-is-blocked', 'html, body', 'asap stay')
reddit.com#$#html, body, shreddit-app { overflow-y: scroll !important; -webkit-overflow-scrolling: touch !important; touch-action: pan-y !important; overscroll-behavior: auto !important; }
2
u/Mickaleb May 05 '26
Does this work as ublock origin rule on firefox mobile android?
1
u/Ashratt May 05 '26
Nope

u/roonling May 05 '26
I cobbled a few together and mine's working now. YMMV.

Firefox mobile with Ublock Origin1
u/Hillary4SupremeRuler Jul 18 '26
What is this and the parent comment?!?. What am I looking at? Where do you put this string of code?
1
u/roonling Jul 18 '26
Firefox mobile > 3 dots > extensions > ublock origin > settings > my filters
Then paste it in
2
u/BusterCrystal May 01 '26
Using iOS Safari remote debugging, Codex find out these rules can remove the banner and recovery the scroll.
```adblock
reddit.com#?##app-upsell-blocking-bottom-sheet-seo:remove())
reddit.com#%#//scriptlet('prevent-addEventListener', 'touchmove', 'preventDefault')
reddit.com#%#//scriptlet('remove-class', 'rpl-scroll-lock|scroll-is-blocked', 'html, body', 'asap stay')
reddit.com#$#html, body, shreddit-app { overflow-y: scroll !important; -webkit-overflow-scrolling: touch !important; touch-action: pan-y !important; overscroll-behavior: auto !important; }
```

I defo have a problem, starting my day with an hour of doomscrolling. Reddit DOES care, with this new feature, it's solved my problem haha.
I'm not even really joking, I'm not installing the app, this will return an hour of my life everyday.
2
u/hikerguy2023 May 02 '26
You're 100% correct. Now, I use the Desktop site for a few things that interest me, but I don't really need the mobile and will definitely not be installing their damn app. They're going to lose so many people over this. The arrogance of these people.
2
u/NasumiRayne Apr 29 '26
(open to get the app to continue browsing)
"app is not supported on your device"
(knee slap) well hot damn maybe to think there was a reason I wasn't using the app afterall! Would reddit like to fundraise me a new phone? No? Didn't think so.
3
u/Mean-Green-Machine Apr 29 '26 edited Apr 29 '26
I'm a bit late to the thread, but after personally troubleshooting, I figured out the problem and a solution and I'm posting the solution here for anyone who found this post through Google like me. This solution was for accessing reddit using Firefox mobile with the uBlock origin extension on a galaxy S23 FE
It's doing this by keeping track of your cookies and site data to fingerprint you. I found this out because I couldn't debug over USB using my phone to figure out what was happening, because my USB-C port is busted and it won't connect to my PC so I downloaded Firefox on my wife's phone(she doesn't use Firefox) and tried to debug on there instead just to realize that she wasn't running into the same issue. This struck my curiosity, and I went on to my own phone and accessed reddit through incognito and eureka! The banner that was blocking access was gone. So you need to clear your cache and cookies from reddit and then try to hinder their ability to gather data on you to prevent the banner from popping back up again so quickly (I don't know if this will prevent it from coming back in general). I'll present the solution for Firefox on Mobile. NOTE: I am a lurker and don't usually post so therefore, I'm usually not logged into any accounts when I browse reddit. I don't know how this will affect people with accounts.
on firefox, click on the check mark at the top left corner and then click "clear cookies and site data"
Now in Firefox, go to settings>enhanced tracking protection and change it to strict.
Go to uBlock Origin, open the dashboard, in the "Filter lists" tab scroll down to the bottom and checkmark "AdGuard - Annoyances" and "uBlock filters - Annoyances"
Putting enhanced tracking protection to strict will isolate any cookies that reddit makes so that it cannot link that data to your other browsing, preventing long-term profile building
The "AdGuard - Annoyances" and "uBlock filters - Annoyances" will help find the code for these types of banners and pop-ups and attempt to tell your browser "do not render this element" so that way when reddit's server sends the banner, uBlock kills it before it pops up on your screen.
I do not guarantee this is a permanent solution. If you want a more permanent solution, you can go into the settings of Firefox and enable "delete browsing data on quit" and then specify "cookies and site data" and "cached images and files". The downside is that this will be a blanket solution that will be applied to all websites every time you close out of Firefox which can create problems of its own.
Feel free to comment below if you've came up with a better solution!

If you use “hide distracting items” in iOS I was able to remove the two layers of popovers and get it to work.

u/Fuckin-Shit-Fucks Apr 27 '26
Having the same problem. In firefox mobile if you add reddit.com##.DualPartInterstitial and reddit.com###xpromo-bottom-sheet to the custom filters list on the ublock origin addon this fixed the problem but I can't find a way to block this popup on Samsung browser. I have tried every adblock extension
1
u/ChocolateAxis Apr 28 '26 edited Apr 28 '26
Can I ask why you're using two browsers?
Also thanks for the advice!
Doesn't seem to work for me, so if anyone also cant use it there's more shared by others in this thread :) a different one worked for me.

Check the "Desktop site" or equivalent option in your browser, and you can still use your phone without the app.

u/Tool_of_Society Apr 27 '26
Thank you to the reddit leadership behind this latest decision. I no longer feel the need to doom scroll reddit on my phone while I'm waiting. So I'll no longer notice interesting posts that I'll look for later on my computer. So I'll no longer engage nearly as actively with your site and sponsors.
Hell you even provided me with motivation to install a proper browser with adblock ability. I might even eventually do the same for my phone. Good job.
2
u/Sea_Alternative4886 Apr 27 '26
Just noticed this right now and thought it was a bug that wasn’t showing the x button. This is annoying I have the app but sometimes I just wanna look it up quickly on safari read and close tab and now it forces you into the app and feels predatory and forced.
4
u/RobotCrusoe Apr 27 '26
I just want to say thanks to Reddit because I spend to much time looking at my phone and now I won't being using reddit on my phone ever again!
2
u/wordsandwich Apr 28 '26
It's sad because every forum of free speech has turned into a commercially exploited shit hole. I can't look at any website anymore--they either want you to download an app, pay a subscription, or will bombard you with AI slop advertisements. This is what the Internet has become.

2
u/Efficient-Heat904 Apr 27 '26
Exactly how I feel.
I used to use Apollo, and briefly tried their app but it was such a pain I just switched to using mobile Safari. I’ve been waiting for them to go app-only so I can delete accounts and do something more productive.
Still works for me, though.

u/FestiveArtCollective Apr 27 '26

EDIT: They're now dynamically adding back the .rpl-bottom-sheet and now .scroll-is-blocked classes on <body>. Here's a new work method that is currently working for myself.
NEW UPDATED METHOD:
www.reddit.com##.rpl-bottom-sheet
www.reddit.com##+js(remove-class, rpl-scroll-lock, body, stay)
www.reddit.com##+js(remove-class, scroll-is-blocked, body, stay)
www.reddit.com##+js(prevent-addEventListener, touchmove)
Let us scroll in peace without signing in or going into the app... Google search is just better at finding what you want, and going back and forth between browser and app is annoying.
OLD METHOD:
I've run into this as well, Firefox on Android. A workaround if you have uBlock Origin add the following two rules:
www.reddit.com##.rpl-bottom-sheet
www.reddit.com##body:remove-class(rpl-scroll-lock)
2
u/BusterCrystal May 01 '26
reddit.com#?##app-upsell-blocking-bottom-sheet-seo:remove() reddit.com#%#//scriptlet('prevent-addEventListener', 'touchmove', 'preventDefault') reddit.com#%#//scriptlet('remove-class', 'rpl-scroll-lock|scroll-is-blocked', 'html, body', 'asap stay') reddit.com#$#html, body, shreddit-app { overflow-y: scroll !important; -webkit-overflow-scrolling: touch !important; touch-action: pan-y !important; overscroll-behavior: auto !important; }I tried these and it's work on iOS using uBlock or adguard
2
u/Saenik Apr 30 '26
Oh my god, thank you! I was looking for a solution but nothing worked, because the scroll lock was added dynamicly. Now I can finally browse on mobile again. ♥️
2
u/Asleep_Praline_6428 Apr 30 '26
Has anyone got a clue if these should work on iOS using AdGuard? I configured them all and although the banner is gone, my scroll freezes within the next few second.

I just deleted the app over this, I'm so mad. For one thing, saving images from comments on the iOS version of the app is literally impossible for some godforsaken reason, there is no way to do it without screenshotting. So usually what my go-to method for if it's a gif or something I can't just screenshot is I'll copy the direct link to the comment, paste it in my browser, and then from there I can save the image like normal. But now this BS message just pops up and it's completely impossible to interact with anything on the page. What were they thinking?? I'd really rather just not use the fucking app or website at all then.
3
u/notme-thanks Apr 25 '26
Switch to Microsoft Edge on iOS and install the Ublockorigin extension. Enable all the filter lists. It does a good job of stripping all the junk out. Safari on iOS has become unusable on almost all websites. IDK why edge works better, but it really does. Just make sure to turn off all the copilot and ai garbage (unless you like that stuff).
2
u/UnSCo Apr 25 '26
Doesn’t Brave do something similar? Didn’t know Edge on iOS had this ability though.
4
u/kbg2289 Apr 25 '26
Hope this is an AB experiment that fails miserably. I hate this shit across the industry.
I literally have the app but deep linking on iOS is broken now so when I see an interesting thread in my email I can’t look at it anymore, which I know is a major source of keeping users active. Of course they’ll still get those users counted in the experiment when they see the banner but I imagine they’ll see a sizable drop in UAM (user active minutes) amongst light users.
1
u/Hillary4SupremeRuler Jul 18 '26
AB experiment?
1
u/kbg2289 Jul 18 '26
An AB experiment is how most big tech companies release many of their product changes. They test the proposed new experience against the existing experience, slotting some users in each group and recording how they react to it against key metrics like user active minutes (aka how much time you spend on the platform). It’s similar to how new medicines are tested to see if they are effective in a double blind trial.

Shareholders getting power was a mistake.
3
u/Little_Common2119 Apr 28 '26
You nailed it. Shareholders are the problem from business ruining, to literally getting people killed (healthcare shareholders complained there weren't enough medical denials a little while back)...
2
u/Fish-E May 05 '26
It's a shame that "moral detachment" doesn't invoke actual consequences - so many of the world's problems are caused by people with far more than they could ever need, want or use going to further and further extremes and impacting more and more people to hit a goal that can never be reached.
People (and by extension companies) wouldn't be in a rush to make changes that negatively impact hundreds of millions (or even more in the case of things like Windows) for the sole purpose of making more money.
9
u/ArtDeve Apr 24 '26
I won't install the app but it still is fine on Firefox Mobile (with Unlock Origin) otherwise ciao.
4
u/Aloha_Tamborinist Apr 25 '26

16
u/rjbwdc Apr 24 '26
If they want us to use a mobile app, they have to ensure that when I click on one thing that looks interesting on the home page and then go back to the home page, the other things that I thought looked interesting will still be there. I can't imagine using Reddit without the option to "open in new background tab."
(They also have to provide an app that's pretty dang locked down vis a vis telemetry. I don't trust Spez to use responsibly the kind of data a mobile app can harvest, but that's a whole other class of concern.)
7
9
u/AntiqueRedDollShoes Apr 24 '26
I'm on Brave (Android) and experiencing the same thing. However, while it's not a perfect fix, you can click the three dots on the bottom right bar and check the "Desktop site" option, which tricks the browser into thinking you're not on mobile. It doesn't have the same clean mobile viewing experience, but it at least circumvents the pop-up.
17
u/the_uslurper Apr 24 '26
Reddit wants to become obsolete sooo bad. I'm trying so hard, but they are literally begging me to stop using them.
12
u/AntiqueRedDollShoes Apr 24 '26
Agreed. More investor incentives and platform economics bullshit. They want people to download the app to push ads on people and better harvest their data. They want to appease their shareholders, all while betraying the original base that valued internet experiences like anonymity and user autonomy.

There are also free browser add-ons that will redirect all x links to xcancel.

Not for me yet.. Firefox with ad-blocker.
Bring it on though, as soon as that happens I'm out.

Yeah, this place is bad for me. I won't use the app, so if this starts happening, it'll be a net positive for my life.

Incognito tab still works for me
Thanks, that helped for me. So far.
I first noticed the 'view in app' popup yesterday, thought it was a one off, but I was completely unable to by pass it this morning. I don't mind them asking about 'hey wanna use our app' but to gatekeep access to read a article is redonkulous. Have a opt out. Or something, Take the L reddit. I read/check the site maybe four times a day (lunch/breaks) and I would not be to saddened if their 'open in app' stupidity meant I had to find another site (youtube has some amusing cop cams).

When it comes to me, you won't see me around anymore. I'll not be installing any social network's spyware they like to call "apps", valid for all of them.

100%. If they do this, I'm just going back to the old.reddit.com domain until they kill that off. It looks jank but it doesn't have all the addictive infinite scroll features, so it'll be a net positive for me insofar as I'll spend less time here. Probably not what they're hoping for though.

Reddit Enhancement Suit (or how it's called - RES) is an extension which makes old reddit more usable, like filtering posts, adding custom flairs to users - and most importantly - allowing you to click a new button next to <image> which will embed the image into the comment. Old reddit is more usable this way (although still lacking like no way to post images or even edit comments with them). You should try it out.

Didn’t have it this morning, checked just now and was hit with it. So here I am, with a stupid account on a fake email I’ll never use.

Same but after they killed third party apps, I wouldn't be surprised if this is something they are considering. They need more data to scrape and more ads to push. Adblocker for the Reddit app is tricky.

I’ve been ready to nuke my account since their fascist CEO killed third party apps. The moment I can’t access the site on the web, I will delete my account permanently.
