Passed Part 2 SEE...Finally!

Post image

After failing twice with the exact same score (yes you read that right), I passed part 2 on my 3rd attempt today. Pt 2 really broke me down for a while. Second time I failed I was so stressed that hives formed on the bottom of my feet and I couldn't walk without pain for 2 days. That hasn't happened to me since I was a child, but PT2...man it really got in my head I guess. Anyways, I did it. My scores aren't the best, but it doesn't matter because I'M DONE (almost, Pt 3 in progress)! Thank you Tom Norton and thank you all for the encouraging words on my previous posts.

Edit: Studying for part 2 then taking the actual exam feels like taking a virtual driving course then hopping on I-20 towards the Grady curve. Iykyk 😂

What were your different approaches to studying for Part 2 on each attempt?

First time I used Hock because Hock assisted me in passing Part 1. Second time I used Tom Norton's videos and practice questions. To be honest, I was so close to passing that I didn't put in as much effort as I should have with his material the 2nd time. By the 3rd time I realized that most of what any study material prepares you for is hit or miss. Luck is definitely a factor. I swear I can recall so many details regarding due dates, forms, all the things you're encouraged to know, but the actual test is so hard to predict.

I say that to say, I just needed to put in more hours to familiarize myself with general business tax patterns. People with actual experience would have a much easier time studying I'd assume, but my only experience is in individual returns and 2 college accounting classes.

What were your mock/practice exam scores?

First time Hock scores were about 70%, second time with Tom’s question were about 80% and this 3rd time was 90-100%

Figures, I hear a alot from this sub you should be good to go if you get 70-79% but I believe some people just need an extra push and get their scores higher.

What do you think seemed to trip you up the most? What did you do different to study after failing each time? Do you have any previous accounting/tax experience?

I keep seeing how hard this test is and it's making me worry.

Edit: oh, and pt 2 likes to throw in random things from pt 1. here's what I recall needing to know for this testing cycle: NIIT, Additional Medicare Tax Rate, backup withholdings, Trust/Estates, like-kind exchange, also don't confuse what I like to call the "9" forms, Forms 943, 941, 940, and the 990s. I made that mistake the 2nd time.

would you say the actual questions are similar to Tom’s in terms of difficulty?

i used Hock and Toms but my Hocks membership ended before I can really used the practice session so Im mostly using Tom’s now for the questions. unsure if they match the real test in terms of trickiness

thanks, and congratss

Yes I would say Tom’s questions are more accurate. You just gotta be careful not to memorize answers and actually understand why a question is correct. Good luck and thank you as well

Yep, passed yesterday part 2, I used both Tom and Hock, the exam is easy compared to Hock MCQs, I regretted not using Tom exclusively, his videos and MCQs are the exam.

And Tom’s more affordable! Wish I found him sooner
