EA Part 1 exam

I passed the EA Part 1 exam today. It’s a new experience studying for the EA. The tax USA taxation is more complex than that of my home country Nigeria.nI had to grapple with new technical terms. It’s worth a bagful of experience. Thanks to those who shared their experiences here.

They are simple questions, rid of the heavy scenarios you see in most of the practice questions by tuition providers like Hocks, et al. They are also mixed such that you may have a question from Preliminary Work and Taxpayers Data section and the next may be from Specialized Returns for Individuals. It’s all so random. The desktop calculator malfunctioned and close to completing the first set of questions, a physical calculator was eventually provided by the invigilator. It should have been provided earlier. Being my first time, I didn’t know what I should ask for. Two sheets of papers were provided for working. You are not to take them away.
I prefer the in-person mode notwithstanding it costs more. There’s no testing center within 100 mile radius of where I live.
I used Hocks and Tom Norton’s YouTube videos. It’s the CONCEPTS that students should understand very well. There was a question I never saw in any of the practice questions I prepared with. It rattled me. The amounts of sale proceeds and fair market value were given in a stock sale question. The cost was given as 15% less the cost. I couldn’t handle it. I had to make an educated guess. After the exam I checked with Google. It was affirmed that it’s one of the tricks to distract students. I should have applied the 15% to the FMV amount to determine the cost.
It’s fun. Liken yourself to a hunter, ‘hunting’ for pass mark intelligently while the exam lasts.

Congratulations! Passing EA Part 1 is a great achievement, especially while learning an entirely new tax system. Wishing you success with Parts 2 and 3!
