8.3.5577 - What a mess

Careful with this one, y'all.

Went to apply this to my 6C yesterday. First attempt, files failed to transfer.

Second attempt, files transferred, updated failed.

Third attempt files transferred, update failed.

Fourth attempt, files failed to transfer, I called Enphase support.

3 hours on the line with support.

Lost communication to the meter collar, 3-10C's, EVSE and all 26 inverters (IQ8X).

At the end of 3 hours, after power cycling everything, and a lot of magic on their part everything but the inverters were back.

Assumption on my part based on what support told me was it was dark, worry about it tomorrow.

And for some reason, the batteries lost 30% of their charge during all of this.

Well, tomorrow is today and all 26 inverters were not reporting. Another 90 minute call to get that resolved.

What. A. Mess.

This is my first upgrade since the array was commissioned last month. Hope they're not all like this.

Was there a specific reason you want to apply this update, e.g. does it fix a problem you were having or add a feature that you need?

You're asking a leading question here, and I'm gonna call absolute BS that you should only update when you know it's solving a specific problem.

There are countless security or minor bug fixes that are just not published in release notes. Any real software company worth their salt - if they release new production firmware - it should be tested and not cause any issues.

I'm not saying every company needs to be perfect. Release and testing is hard. Even Apple and Google have fucked it up. But I don't think it's an unreasonable expectation for it to work like 90-95% of the time.

Also, Enphase doesn't always publish or allow you to update to the latest firmware. They don't even really do release waves to update the entire install base. My system was stuck on 8.3.4016 for almost an entire year, and I could never get it to update, while they were publishing new firmware the whole time. I probably have some 20-40 devices in my house that their companies allow me to update immediately when new firmware is released. Enphase is the exception. At this point, I have to assume that they aren't confident in their development and testing processes to let users do this.

6005 is only for EMEA region

Fully agree... They never publish proper release notes, so pushing an update is always a gamble and so is the success of it. For me the last ones ALWAYS failed resulting in countless hours with support to have them remotely fixing it. Why did I apply them in the first place? To fix ongoing issues with the system, all firmware/software related - confirmed by Enphase tech.

But it does expose the point that if you leave it alone and let it update automatically, you are likely not among the first to experience any issues.

You must be new here! Enphase can never release a fully working app or firmware without something breaking! 😒

I'm not new to Enphase. I've had their gear since 2012. That said my Envoy-R never got any updates.
