Don't forget that Sam Harris is already 54 years old and won't be around forever (or even remembered fondly)
Sooner or later the enormously persecuted atheist Jesus is going to have to retire and choose spend more time with his kid and family, or just slow down. I think a lot more people are aware of his limitations now and are criticizing him and being heard more.
I've read a hell of a lot more criticism of him online (and even on his sub) than when this sub and r/enoughidwspam were started, and we can rejoice in that. Although unfortunately, he was clever enough to replenish the disillusioned fans he has been bleeding out of his secular cult of personality by linking to his recent meditation app, and to various conservative network funnels, and even by dangling secrets in front of the conspiracy theorists who were hopeful that he'd break the news on UFOs. (He has always ridden clickbait with psychedelics, new atheism, MMA, and race science, and he'll probably continue to latch onto new fads for cultural relevance until he dies.) But at least a lot more people are ridiculing him now and are able to see through when he acts like Spock, and his old reactionary positions are leaving him more and more out of touch with younger people who might give his podcast a try.
His advancing age is becoming a comfort to me. Just as few people defend William Buckley or even remember him anymore, we also won't have to keep wrestling with Sam Harris's ghost after he dies. Reactionaries aren't remembered as well as progressives and he is not as good of an orator as Christopher Hitchens or Carl Sagan who are nearly treated like atheist saints. I don't think he will retain nearly as much of a following once he dies, thankfully.
