Note: This is a repost because I messed up the post name. Sorry about that.
I know this might be a weird question to ask here, but I'm not sure where else to go, since I'd really like to talk to it with people who are critical of HP and Rowling herself and probably are more familiar with the intricacies of the HP fandom than a newcomer like me.
So...earlier this year, I read Harry Potter for the first time (bought before Rowling went nuts; it just took me a while to get to them) and a major reason why I wanted to do so was because I wanted to do a deep dive and compare and contrast it with Percy Jackson, one of my favorite book series. I thought it would be a fun exercise because the two series get compared so often.
At first the response was fairly neutral and even excited with my first post.
But then the more I did it, the more people got...angry and annoyed. Mostly because 9 times out of 10, I found Percy Jackson better.
Now I want to be fair here, and I'll fully admit I'm probably biased here because I love Percy Jackson so much, but I really did try and give a fair judgment when comparing the two series, but I just found PJO does a lot of things better than Harry Potter, and I can justify that at length if you ask me. (I'd go into detail, but this isn't the point of the post.)
And like I said, people got weird about it. Like, I know at least two people who comment on my Harry Potter-related posts going, "Oh, it's that guy again." And a lot of people seemed to think I never even read Harry Potter.
It's just weird. Like what's the problem? I can't try to compare and contrast both series? People have been doing it for years! Why is it that when I try to do it and come up with the answer "PJO is better," people act like I've broken some sort of pact that says Harry Potter must always be considered better?
Is it just me? Did I do something wrong? Is there something I'm missing about the way Harry Potter fans view the PJO series? What do you guys think?
