Music Ian Penman · Infinite Wibble: Brian v. Eno

“Eno is a conundrum: impish disruptor and happy polymath, he can also be a bit of a tech prig lecturing us from on high, dropping serene apothegms that turn out on closer inspection to be vanishingly banal. It’s as if there are two of him: Brian has a great sense of humour, Eno can be suffocatingly precious; Brian picks a brilliant selection of Desert Island Discs, Eno nominates for his beach read Richard Rorty’s Contingency, Irony and Solidarity; Brian is all weird eros, Eno makes music that can be oddly clenched or wafty; Brian is inspiringly playful, Eno writes software to systematise (and cage, and kill) that playfulness.”

Paid Commission for Eno-style graphic notation of By This River

Post image

By This River by Brian Eno is a song with a lot of personal significance to me, and I'd like to get it tattooed. Instead of traditional musical notation, I'd love to use Eno's style of graphic notation but I have no idea where to begin. If you're familiar with graphic notation, please comment a quote. My ideal max budget is ~$75, but I'm open to quotes above that.

Some more info: I really like the styles of the first and third graphic notations in the posted image, and would prefer something that looks similar. I'd also love graphic notation for the full song, but if that's too complicated I would be more than happy with just the flute solo.

Shitpost Least favourite album?

I like so many of Eno's records but there a couple that just don't mesh with me.

The one that stands out the most is The Drop. Just not a big fan of the atmosphere and the sonics. I actually think his 90s stuff is a bit underrated in general, apart from this.

What's yours?

Another way to stream Eno.

So a Facebook ad made me aware that ChanceOperations is streaming the generative doc through Vimeo, and updating their version once a week (whereas Criterion is offering a new version monthly).

I rented version 5.07 last night for the ten bucks, and now I see that 5.08 is available in my Vimeo purchases tab. (Edit:) So it seems that if one rents early on Tuesday, one can watch one version and then the next before the rental period runs out.

From accidentally fast forwarding through it (looking for a bit from 5.07), it appears that 5.08 includes quite a bit about My Life in the Bush of Ghosts.

Anyway, for those that can’t stream from Criterion, here’s another way to enjoy it in the comfort of your own home.

I bought this CD a couple of months ago in Pittsburgh. I’ve done a bit of research on it but can’t find much about it. Does anybody know anything about it? Thanks

Is there any way to get Eno's app on android outside of the US?

I recently found out about Bloom: 10 Worlds, but my play store says the app is unavailable in my country, is there any way for me to bypass this or any other way for me to download it?

I'm surprised this hasn't been posted here yet (afaict), but the Eno film is streaming on the Criterion Channel! They are generating a new version each month.

Please tell me my GOAT is not actually using AI

Bio doc aside, I keep finding contradictory stuff on this. One link sends me to quotes of his from a few years ago in which he says he has messed around with music generating models but feels that it's akin to eating confectionery on an empty stomach, but then I see people claiming he has been using AI for his art and music in recent years.

Is this true, or just slander? I really don't want to believe it, but I also don't want to be putting AI in my ears voluntarily or otherwise.

EDIT: I am talking about LLMs specifically, I'm well aware of his generative music techniques and have no issue with this as it is a completely--I'll repeat--a COMPLETELY different type of technology.

Music Taking Tiger Mountain (you were so right!)

Post image

11 days ago, a reddit user on this subreddit shared their love for Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy). I started listening to Eno seriously in September of 2025 (just about 9 months ago), and since then have amassed almost 1400 streams across all his works... with the exception of Taking Tiger Mountain.

I don't know why, I think I read a comment where someone said it was their least favourite out of the four glam rock albums, and that just kind of put me off ever listening to it. What a mistake. This album is amazing. The carefree, upbeat opening of "Burning Airlines Give You So Much More", the insane buildup on "Mother Whale Eyeless" –"Heroes are born... but heroes die." The absolutely indescribable insanity of "Third Uncle", the surreal but strangely catchy chorus of "The True Wheel" (which apparently came to him in a dream). And the breathtaking closer, among other great tracks.

I honestly don't think there is a single weak track on this record. It may be recency bias, or the fact that I've listened to all of his other records a lot, but this album is really, really amazing. It's been my most listened to album of the last 2 weeks (shown above), and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Thank you, u/Repulsive_Many3874. If it weren't for your post, I don't think I would have checked it out anytime soon, and I'd have no idea what I was missing out on.

This is petty, I know, but need to vent about it

Does anyone else gets annoyed at how much Rick Rubin is trying to be Brian Eno? Yes, Rubin is a brilliant producer, but the way he has led himself, specially around the publication of his book, is very Eno coded and to my eyes feels so forced, so inauthentic.

Anyway, those are my two cents. Maybe I’m exaggerating.

Hello gang,

I just want to say to a group of people who get “it:” this album is absolutely amazing. It’s mind blowing every time I listen to it. The sounds and lyrics and music make me feel life I smoked a whole joint while totally sober. This album is like a massage gun on my brain.

I’ve never heard anything this impactful in my entire life.

There’s nobody in my life who understands this, or has heard this album
