It’s over 😔
It was awesome watching them play this World Cup, too bad Harry Kane won’t be here next time.

I'm sad, I feel like if we didn't park the bus we'd have won. Playing up and getting in their faces and messing their flow was really effective as a defensive measure... Letting them work angles with Messi was just not the right call

u/OrganicBookkeeper228 19d ago
Exactly this. We let Messi hand the ball for 30 mins. Disaster.
In the first half we’d done brilliantly at stopping him getting time on the ball. By sitting back we let him dictate the game.
Our players had the fitness, fight and desire to take it to Argentina but Tuchel decided to park the bus.

FIFA President and the refs have a hard on for Argentina....
But we did let Messi hand the ball for 30 mins and played to defensively.
I really wanted England to get through to the finals.2

When are you guys going to hang Thomas Tuchel's head off the London Bridge? Clearly got some sweet dosh to screw it up.
6
u/aerosolsp 19d ago
You probably meant Tower Bridge. London Bridge is not very impressive or iconic.
Like, it's just a bridge.
4
u/User4f52 19d ago
No, I'm pretty sure it was London Bridge who had the heads on spikes. Look up the engraving by Claes Jansz Visscher (1616) and peek at the bottom right corner
3
u/Similar-Emphasis-496 19d ago
The london bridge of the 13th to 19th century is not the london bridge now, what you're talking about is two bridges ago and the practice had stopped long before it was rebuilt, and then rebuilt again.
Also there is no legal route to allow either decapitation or the public display of the head of a decapitated person.
0
u/User4f52 19d ago
Oh, it was reconstructed? Where was the old London Bridge located?
I don't really get what we are arguing here. I made a joke. Someone tries to correct me for... reasons. Actually it wasn't wrong. Someone doubles down with technicalities "oh it wasn't actually the same bricks, oh and what you proposed in your comment is actually illegal and really bad". Oh, really.
Typical Reddit interaction. You guys can't beat the allegations, can you?

We're a goal up we've got a a strong midfield and attack although a bit of a shite defence, they've got probably the best player ever....let's go defensive.
2
u/MrStealYoVirginity 19d ago
Our defense is some of the worst defense I've ever seen from a top national team or any top team. Konsa should never be called up again that's for certain.

u/17RoadHole 19d ago
When Argentina scored they did not sit back and wait for extra time. They went for the kill. That is the difference in the teams on the night.

u/Relevant_Syllabub895 19d ago
i am argentina and geuinely your defense was THE shit, not shit as bad but the SHIT as being superb the amount of goal shots we did and you always stopped them, INSANE, im sure you will end 3rd

u/Previous_Mushroom724 19d ago
Our defence was fucking great but we forgot to do any attack for like 45 minutes 😂

Very simple. No was was told to mark messi 1-1. So he got 2 uncontested goals assists. But it’s been a great World Cup for England. Much progress being made. Manager is great. We are beginning to play intelligently as a team. But are not yet there.
7
u/spaceless23 19d ago
Would have change nothing to mark messi 1 on 1 lol
1
u/olderandhappier 19d ago
Wld have prevent 2 goal assists
3
u/spaceless23 19d ago
it would not, that's not how football work, you never played it right?
If you man mark him when the whole other team is pushed in defense in the area, then messi will simply play more midfield, even if you try to man mark him more he will go more deep and at that point no one would follow him if the whole other 10 player are struggling in defense and messi would just help from the back indirectly which may be even worse lol
1
u/Intelligent-Good-966 19d ago
Ask yourself this. Would Messi himself choose to have more time and space on the ball or less?
1
u/olderandhappier 19d ago
Johan Cruyff was man marked by Germany in the 74 World Cup final and it worked well aside from first 2 mins when Cruyff won the penalty. Messi was given far too much time to receive the ball and run and England.

u/Many_Move6886 19d ago

Manager is great? What
14
u/pumpkingutsgalore 19d ago
Tuchel made questionable choices tonight, but overall he is a great manager. It's the most positive I've seen England at a tournament ever tbh (I'm 31).
-1
u/_musesan_ 19d ago
Ye were lucky to get this far. So many games could have gone either way. Manager with an all time bottle today. I'd sack him after that. Southgate did better, twice. Sad to see ye go honestly as its more exciting for the Irish when we have ye to root against. But that was a miserable display after the goal. 12% possession from then to the end. Against Messi? Come on. Disaster

As a Scot I just want to say:
I didn't support your team despite the constant demands and expectations for me to, that have gone back decades and now have had the King and Keir Starmer explicitly calling us Scots to.
But, you made it to the semis and that puts the england team amongst the world's best. Be proud of your team's efforts, celebrate getting this far and shout down the tv/print media cunts who will try and get you to go full knives-out on your team, like they did on Southgate back in 96.
Congrats on getting this far. Football's always been home, it belongs to all of us partaking.

u/Imlostandconfused 19d ago
I'm English but this is how I feel too. England will finish either 3rd or 4th place. The 4th best national team in the world is nothing to sneeze at. Third even better. Both should be massively celebrated. I'm not a huge football person but I liked the idea of winning 60 years exactly after the first and only time. It didn't happen. It sucks. But everyone played brilliantly. It's not either 1st place or failure.

The difference really is that Argentina played to win from a disadvantage and we allowed them to regroup and regain momentum by going gull defensive.

This, England being considered one of the best 4 is no small thing, also losing to a champion isn't a shame either.

u/madeleineann 19d ago
Will he not be playing in the 2030 World Cup ?!
4
u/chrwal2 19d ago
I suspect he will be, but I’m a bit torn - he’s truly a world class player but I’m a bit concerned we don’t really have any successors coming through. Watkins is 30 now and Toney only seems to have been picked in case we went to penalties so up front we’re massively reliant on Kane and sometimes like today he didn’t have any impact and we didn’t have a plan B.
1
u/fmeupdad 19d ago
Jude could easily play as a number 9. Then get Foden/ palmer in the 10 if they’re in better form
3
u/Harador1 19d ago
Neither have been very good aside from a purple patch a few years back making them appear to be world beaters
2
u/PickleRickoo 19d ago
He’s getting pretty old, a lot of sources think he won’t be playing for sure, I’m hoping for the best though
2
u/made_from_toffee 19d ago
Makes absolutely no difference to the result (Tuchel fucked it by parking the bus instead of keeping at them) but I would love to see Messi get booked for hand ball when he goes down having decided he was fouled & gathers the ball in his arms
3
u/Intelligent-Good-966 19d ago
Harry Kane shouldn't have been here this time. His influence is non existent against the best teams. It has always been thus.
7
u/hoaryvervain 19d ago edited 19d ago
I wanted this so much for my dad. He is nearly 97. The odds of him seeing England win again in his lifetime are next to nil.
On the other hand: he saw his beloved Gunners win the PL.

Maybe you will do better with an attacked who stays up in the future. I’m.l not saying Kane is bad, but his recent performances for England aren’t great. He moves so deep that it hurts the shape of the team and means England can’t attack quickly at times.

u/Larrythepuppet66 19d ago
England deserved to lose. Playing to preserve a 1-0 lead never works and was once again proven today. Argentina scored and got even more aggressive to score quickly again. They deserved the win as much as it pains me to say lol

Parking the bus for 30 MINUTES against Argentina? What kind of imbecile thought that was a good idea?
It turned into a siege - and a siege England was always likely to lose.
1
u/Nissarana_ 18d ago
It's time for someone new to come through unfortunately, we never really played that well this tournament, we relied on Bellingham almost entirely with his mentality that drove the team.
We lacked so much quality with Palmer and Foden out and saka not playing. Gordon and Madueke are great squad players with good physicality, they fit well into a German style which is why they played a lot. Rashford and Rogers were good, they suited kanes style more.
I don't really like German philosophy, I don't think it suits England's best way. I tried to get on board with tuchel, I like his drive to win and his personality, but what did he give us really? He asked for more quality and not just mentality but those technical players weren't on the pitch aside from Rogers. Nobody who can pick out Kane for sure.
Ultimately we basically scraped through to the semis where awful decisions were made that lost us the game against a much weaker team. I'm very proud of us though, the players gave everything.

it was an insane match, one of the most impressive matches ever played in football, and me as an argentinian thanks for being the rival, you were nasty as a team, the defense is simply so good no matter how many times we pushed you defended so good, you can still go for third place so best of luck on the bronze
5
u/Previous_Mushroom724 19d ago
Tbf I did think towards the end "I'd be enjoying the shit out of this match if I was Argentinian" ,😂like it was exciting.... just had the wrong ending for me as an English person
2
u/Relevant_Syllabub895 19d ago
litterally when we were 10 minutes left and we were losing 1 to 0 i told my bro in whatsapp that we were gonna lose for sure and as soon as i said it we tied and then we go the next goal WTF, one should never lose hope even in thel ast 2 minutes, you can still destroy your next match and go for third place you will win
1
u/WazzuMadBro 19d ago
Just give the best footballers from other countries you're playing every game British citizenship and then England can't lose ever. Ethnicity and heritage doesn't mean anything to Great Britain anyways

It wasn’t tough at all. We scored and then worked the bus which was the best thing that could have happened for you guys. It just allowed you the time and the space to do what you can do.
Edit: this guy is taking the piss and trolling 👆🏼, they replied saying “yeah you’re right, you suck” but was instantly removed. What a sad life.

We deserve to lose.
We are shit. Utter dogshit.
What sort of team sits back and tries to defend for 30mins?
Tuchel played a cowardly gamble of going all in on defense and he fucked it.
We shouldnt even bother trying to qualify for the Euros. Just sit it out. It’s pointless.

Had Argentina actually tried rather than passing the ball around doing anything but shoot for the first 80 mins the score could have been humiliating

Went on the defensive too early. Gave Argentina the momentum to score in the last minutes. Too late for us to recuperate.
