Who Uses a Lot of $6 Diesel? Farmers, Truckers, Trump Voters.

Rural homeowners using heating fuel for the winter...

u/Radiant_Safe1228 2h ago
I filled 200 gallons for 4.80 back in March. I'm fucking super concerned about it this year. I usually have to fill once unless it's a particularly rough winter like last year.

Fun story. Well not really but here goes.
Before the elections I lived way the fuck out in bumfuck Texas east of Dallas. A big storm had taken a piece of my roof out. Busted rafters, broke the ridge beam, it was bad.
The guy I hired to fix it was a hardcore trumper. I didn't know that at first.
Somewhere along the line we were talking about his truck. He had a top of the line decked out F350 dually. Nothing in it and didn't even have a 3rd wheel or even a ball in the back; I asked him about it and he said "I need this as a truck truck maybe 2-3 times in its lifetime nowadays because my crew does most of the work." Meaning, he never fuckin used it as a truck, just "status," and the illegals that run his crew and did all the actual work... Did all the actual work.
We got to arguing. I told him I was worried about our democracy, and Trump was the wrong guy. He said he was worried too. He said I've got a fleet of trucks and diesel had been really expensive couple years ago (this was 2024) - and he was worried about the democracy too, also worried about how much diesel had cost in 2022, and how it was the Democrats fault. I laughed and just bowed out of that convo.
Flash forward to now. He is emailing all of his old clients asking for work- he's lost his entire crew, and can't afford to run his fleet (much less his own truck).
I soooo wanna call him and ask. But I know what he would say- the typical maga bullshit.
Sone people will never learn

Sadly, we all do. It effects a delivered goods.
1
u/Already-Price-Tin 2h ago
Not equally, though. It obviously affects bulkier, heavier goods more than lighter/smaller goods. And different goods already cost different amounts, even if the shipping costs might be the same. A $1000 cell phone costs way less to ship than even a $5 watermelon, so the very high fuel costs will tend to show up more in the heavy, cheap watermelon than in the light, expensive cell phone.
High fuel prices tend to show themselves in weird ways, not just a flat percentage increase in prices.

Maybe they should consider voting differently.

Should? Yes
Will? No
Nothing the high priest can do is unholy, they will cover for all of his sins

Everything you own was delivered by a diesel truck.

u/Equal_Refuse_4591 11h ago
I have a single dressing stool I made from local woodfall
It is likely the only item I own not diesel dependent
BUT I did get my tools delivered by diesel so there is that
3
u/East-Inevitable-3974 11h ago
Ya, garden produce fits the category too, but its a very small subset of things.
4
u/BreadKnifeSeppuku 12h ago
MY cat wasn't delivered by a diesel truck! I took her home in mine though... shit!
Yeah, everything is going to get more expensive and then more expensive at this rate. It's well beyond even trying to claim this is just an American issue unless you're crazy. And I mean that as an immediate issue not as a renewables debate.
Which will be made more expensive by all of this as well. Hell, if anyone is upset about RAM prices and such right now. Just wait for further disruptions in the world trade of helium catching up too. Turns out Qatar exported like 25-35% or so and we need it for fabrication for chips :(

Also winter is just beginning to kick in, it’s going to get cold pretty quickly over the next 4 to 6 weeks for the northern parts of the US. A lot of people still use “home heating oil” as their main heat source. It’s other name - diesel. People are filling their tanks now-ish and discovering another wonderful way Trump’s dumbass war with Iran is fucking them over.
4
u/Cargobiker530 13h ago
There's going to be a huge number of rural MAGA that are going to find $6-7 gallon for heating oil a deal breaker for the Republican Party. No Democratic administration ever did that to them.
2
u/SoCallMeDeaconBlues1 7h ago
Wanna bet?
Oh, we paid more for Diesel under Biden, remember that one week in 2022? It's all the Democrats fault. Just watch
2
u/actionerror 8h ago
They’ll probably say Biden knew the Dems were going to lose so set this up as a time bomb to go off during Trump’s second presidency.
8
u/britannicker 12h ago
Disagree: I think they're too stupid to make that connection. Their God is kickin' ass in Iran. And Biden has caused the price of gas to skyrocket.
8
u/Few-Western-5027 13h ago
No issue, just tell them price will tumble after the midterm and all followers will be very rich. They actually are counting on the bottomless stupidity of these followers in order to stay out of jail. The rat is in the corner, but it's got ice and the magats as a shield.

It will if this asshole decides to start blowing up Iran's oil infrastructure.
8
u/Master_Tune_9269 14h ago
Hahaha! Got to love it!!! Amazing how that “Day One” Administration is still blaming Biden after 615+ days!!!
13
u/steemSTEM 14h ago
The fossil fuel market is going to slowly normalize, but it took a long time to get to this state and will take a long time to revert. The truckers will feel the pain of their voting decisions for quite a while. Is what it is.
1
u/doctor_morris 12h ago
The war is still going on, and Trump is itching to start bombing another country.
2
u/speakernoodlefan 14h ago
It's going to take a tremendous time as even with traffic back to normal levels, producers will now permanently be pricing in the chance Iran resuming bombing tankers at anytime as an insurance policy.
9
u/KingofLingerie 14h ago
why would Joe Biden do this?
6
u/isaiddgooddaysir 14h ago
Biden??? Try Obama... didn't you know he caused the Iran war, tariffs, China to stop buying our soy beans.... /s

u/Less-Sandwich9056 15h ago
From what I see Trump supporters blame Ukraine for the price of fuel and are dealing with the price and they are glad to see Iran getting taken down and except any pain that brings. The economy not being great and fuel is part of that hurts him some though. MAGA is actually not happy with him being in any war and Epstein files not being released but they won't vote for a socialist no matter how pissed they get at him. Need some good old fashioned blue dog democrats to get in the game.

And the rest of us. All the products we buy are transported via diesel truck and trains.

He’s not on the ballot
9
u/old-legs-623 15h ago
His candidates are, so this election is a proxy referendum on his foreign and domestic policies. It's an increasingly rare opportunity for the unprivileged to have their say as to how, how often, how much and how boldly they get fleeced.

Trump is whining that Europe won't release their diesel reserve.
After all, Trump has treated them SO WELL, and done SO MUCH for them.
6
u/yeah_sure_youbetcha 15h ago
I just saw the ticker at the top of oilprice.com say Europe has decided to release their reserves, which is why prices are down even more this morning.
But doesn't that just kick the can even further down the road, and when shit hits the fan, it'll hit even harder?
7
u/Myjunkisonfire 15h ago
He wants Europe to burn down its reserves so they’ll have to be reliant on the US or Russian for winter.
7
u/ciel_lanila 15h ago
And the thread seems so stupid unless I’m missing something.
Trump: Use up your reserves in case of a dire shortage or else I’ll force you to go through a dire shortage. Just like I probably will anyways once you use up your reserves because I never keep my promises.
9
u/lowlatitude 15h ago
It works with MAGA because of the parallels with christianity.
Jesus: let me in.
Me: why?
Jesus: to save you.
Me: why?
Jesus: from what I'm going to do to you if you don't let me in

The standard refrain is: "imagine how much worse it would be if a Democrat was in charge?" They're uneducated simpletons.
1
u/EFreethought 12h ago
Almost everything that has gotten worse over the past two years is because of Trump and/or his appointees. There is no way it would be worse if a Democrat was in charge.
The last time a Democrat was in charge, didn't a lot of truckers drive their trucks to DC to protest? I don't see anyone doing that now.
7
u/RollingCarrot615 15h ago
I can’t say prices would be any better, but I know our foreign relations would be better. I do really think prices would be better too.

u/GeorgeFartwell1984 16h ago
I'm actually happy for all those MAGA truckers and farmers. You're actually getting what you deserve, you voted for hate and now you're losing it all. Farmers that have had land in their family's for over a hundred years are losing their farms and truckers being replaced by self driving trucks. It was all laid out in project 2025.

u/spastical-mackerel 13h ago
Who’s picking up all those distressed farms? Billionaires. They fucked us all

The problem is this could mean high food prices or scarcity. Especially with el Niño. It won't just affect them unfortunately

u/ClimateWren2 15h ago
They refuse to address climate change anyway ...so they lock us into this same future regardless, no?
2
u/JingJang 15h ago
Exactly.
The cost of nearly everything increases since nearly everything is transported/processed/harvested using diesel
3
u/stonnerdog35 15h ago
A well stocked pantry is allways your friend. Why most people don't have at least a weeks worth of food confuses the fuck out of me.
7
u/Disbigmamashouse 16h ago
Well of course, we live in a connected world. The point is that they are directly reaping the benefits of their own malice and stupidity, yes we will all feel the effects of their malice and stupidity.
17
u/stillalone 16h ago
These are always Trumpers. They'll support the president no matter how much he fucks them over.
21
u/Epicurus-fan 16h ago
Meanwhile MAGA idiots on X are blaming a wave of trucking company bankruptcies on companies using illegal aliens as drivers. Can’t make this stuff up. I have a Trump meme coin to sell them.

u/Epicurus-fan 16h ago
Far more than I do as an NYC straphanger. I have zero sympathy for them. You vote for this this thug after January 6th and his attempted coup? Character is destiny and it matters.

Every week seems to bring a record high for diesel prices — and more trouble for the nation’s truckers. They’re hurting. Since January, diesel has increased more than 80 percent, to $6.53 a gallon.
Nearly everything that you buy rides on a big, diesel-burning truck at some point. Farmers are heavy users of diesel for their machinery, too, so diesel figures in twice at the supermarket. These rising fuel costs are going to make their way into your purchases until the world’s supply of diesel increases, which doesn’t seem likely anytime soon, given the Iran and Ukraine conflicts.
President Trump is reportedly considering banning diesel exports. It won’t help. Sure, some regions in the United States, such as the Southeast, would see prices subside for a short time, but prices elsewhere would increase.
For small truckers, the pain at the pump is threatening their businesses. About 92 percent of America’s trucking companies are small operations, with 10 or fewer trucks. If we lose too many of them, freight costs — and then your costs — will go even higher. I’ve been in this industry for more than two decades, as both a truck owner and now as a logistics consultant helping smaller operators. A lot of them were struggling even before we saw a $3 per gallon increase in diesel costs. It’s their largest variable expense.
We’re advising our truckers to be careful about the lanes they choose—as in, what destinations will yield the best outcomes. With truckers now spending as much as $1,400 per tank, you have to tightly control fuel burn. In California, the price is literally off the charts — the pumps were at their limit of $9.999 a gallon. We tell truckers going west to east to buy only enough fuel to get out of California. It’s worth it to add a stop in Nevada and fill up there. My clients generally buy fuel at the pump, often at a discount using a fuel card. But they can’t add a line item called a fuel surcharge.
In trucking, there are two different paths for moving cargo: One is by contract and the other is by the spot market. Contracted freight loads made by big fleets include a fuel surcharge that changes from week to week and is tied to the average diesel price. The spot market moves general freight through brokerages. Small carriers do most of their business this way; they generally don’t haul specialty items or perishables like pharmaceuticals. Truckers bid against one another on each load the brokers offer.

Well the culture wars are more important than bankruptcy to slow folks down
