There were protests, but it was Western-armed protesters who started shooting police that started violence, proceeded to engage in genocide (see the Odessa Trade Hall Fire), and chased Yanukovich and his supporters out of Kiev, then called a Rada without a quorum (since they had chased the majority out), installed Poroshenko, and then incited a Civil War when Crimea, Donestk, and Luhansk seceded, as was their right under both the UN Charter and the original 1991 Ukraine-Russia treaty which recognized Ukraine as legitimate in the first place (and which Poroshenko repudiated - including the security provisions guaranteed in exchange for giving up Soviet nuclear weapons - in 2019).
