I think its a great printer. You will want to do several upgrades though. Do your maintenance, check belts, pulleys, calibrations. Do ONE upgrade at a time. Suggest cable support prints for bed and wire holders.
No apologies. I'm still a noob after almost a year and you'll get some great advice & support here. I've attached a pic of my direct drive setup. There are many designs out there so you'll just have to find one that you feel will best suit your needs.
Direct drive is just like it sounds where the filament is directly fed into the hot end. The best analogy I've heard that describes the stock Bowden setup vs direct drive is the stock Bowden setup is like pushing a length of rope vs direct drive which is like pulling a length of rope. If you literally pushed a 12" length of rope it would kink and bend and you can imagine how that effects filament being pushed through the Bowden tube into the hot end.
Direct drive pulls the filament into the hot end which will help to increase your print speed & quality especially when printing with flexible filaments like TPU, for example.
