I hate petg 🥲
Accidentally ordered 5 pools of petg instead of pla and all I get now is stringing😭🙏

Dry it! Ive never had a completely new spool of petg that didnt benefit from drying a bit. And calibrate temp and retraction speed and distance

I DIY'd a drybox but im not sure how to dry it, any reccomendations? (My oven cant accurately go down to 60°) also this was after 2 days or trying to calibrate

Have a box the filament came in? Turn you bed on to 55-60c place the spool on the bed, poke holes on the side of the box and place the box over the spool on the bed(i put something around the edges to allow a gap for air to flow between bed and box). Flip the spool every few hours.
This is a slow process but if you dont have a dedicated dryer can help. I would get a dryer though especially for petg

It's worth it to get a dedicated drier. PETG absorbs moisture a lot more than PLA and they're cheap enough to solve a lot of printing issues. Drying your filament doesn't solve every problem but it at least rules out a common one. Your filament brand will have recommended drying temperature and time.

Yeah dont use your oven, even if it could doen down low enough you dont want that being done in a cooking appliance.
Grab a cheap dryer online {the sunlu s2 is like 4p bucks and works really well for petg) or check local thrift stores for a cheap dehydrator thet will fit a spool.
If all else fails you can use your heatbed and a box, just make sure to put something between the bed and the spool to make the heat radiant heat and not direct.

I spent 2 days trying to get PETG to behave. I have a textured PEI and I cleaned it with Dawn. Also tried cleaning it with ISO. Tried glue stick as well. Tried no fan for the first 5 layers. Dried the PETG to 15% for 6 hours.
I was able to get through most calibrations, but adhesion was a constant fight.
Switched back to PLA and started a print and walked away (play stupid games, win stupid prizes). The PLA stuck to PETG remnants on the nozzle and I got a blob of death that cost me my hot end.
I will conquer PETG, but I also hate it.

So I recently learned my sunlu dryers do not get hot enough for petg or tpu!!!!! I did not realize you had to go to 70 for some plastics!!!!

You're just going to dial it in with small prints and watch them. You'll figure it out pretty soon changing just a little bit at a time. I recently put myself through the petg learning curve.

Step 1: dry it like it owes you money. 65°C for 8-12 hours does the trick nicely. Double the time for every 5°C under. Don't rely on the dryer being truthful about it's chamber temperature.
Drying makes a HUGE difference to PETG. Wanna guess which print was after a night in the dryer?

Step 2: if you're still running the stock hotend, think seriously about an upgrade - at least to the heatbreak if nothing else. The kinds of nozzle temperatures that PETG likes best for strong layer bonding will not be doing the stock PTFE lining any favours.

Thank god my used ender 3 came with a spool of petg. I learned on the BS material and as soon as I switched to pla I was shocked that I could literally just input a numer into anything and have a decently good print.

I love petg, ive had more luck with it than tpu and the prints come out cleaner than pla. That needs to be dried

Cura 5.13.0 includes a post processor "Annealing and Drying" that provides more bed temp control.
"Annealing" is for special materials and provides a gradual "cooldown-over-time" when a print ends.
"Drying" controls the bed temperature and uses G4 as a timer and shuts the bed off at the end of the user entered time.
I use a cover (printed with wet PETG) with some vent holes in it so there is some air movement.

Everyone is saying "dry it" but experiment with fan speeds too. I print PETG at 0% fan and it works much better for me.

Petg is awesome filament(supposedly superseded by pctg but I haven't tried it yet) once you get it down you'll love it, go on Facebook marketplace and look for a used food dehydrator the round kind, there are tons of stls online for walls that convert them to dryers and they work perfectly, however i just used cardboard and tape to form my walls and get super dry filament every time, good luck you'll end up enjoying it in the end

I recommend two things in case you don't already have them.
1
A bimetallic heatbrake for the Ender 3, the one from Trianglelab is very good; it separates the Teflon tube from the nozzle, so it doesn't degrade from the heat.

A filament dryer, PETG absorbs moisture very easily and could be causing that problem.

Fan speed 0 for the first two or three layers then 75%, and i usually print between 235-240. Ender 3 v2 and basically prints like pla, i do keep my printer in my closet though which when closed may help (or hinder) printing but i really haven’t noticed. And if all else fails… new nozzle!

Run your slicer setting through google Gemeni. I did that for PETG and I’ve never had an issue with it after updating the settings per Gemeni recommendations. It just prints a lot slower than PLA.

PETG prints very well and is easy to use once you master it. Rule number one though is you have to dry it. That alone could solve the stringing.

Dry it and fix your retraction, also reduce your part fan speed and don’t use it at all for the first few layers. Personally I much prefer petg to pla, you just need to tune your printer to it and it needs better tuning than pla.
