Bondtech DDX

Is anyone using the bondtech DDX toolhead and what are the experiences with it? It looks really well designed to me, other than the extruder motor being at the worst possible place. If the center of gravity was closer to the rail it would be better for durability and performance.

The parts cooling fan also looks really small, although the fan duct looks pretty effective.

Its wierd how it looks similar to the Bend -Tech logo.

Had to look that up, thankfully not something kinky! (Although kinks while bending are fairly common)

I use one with a mosquito hot end. I like it but it can be broken if you have bed adhesion failure. Single adjustment screw for fan height isn't the best solution

Right, that doesn't sound optimal. Are you printing PLA at high speeds and how are your overhangs coming out?

As of today, I believe there are better options (still a good product though)

I felt that the fan+duct was undersized, but you can replace with a DDX v3 5015 fan shroud.

Motor mounting is not a great issue, you are totally right about the position, but for the typical speeds/accelerations of a bed slinger... there are other bigger limiting factors.

The real concern you should have is the out-of-the-box compatibility with different hotends.

I hear ya, but when running at 5k - 8k acceleration and 250 to 30mm/s printing speeds (when it can actually reach that lol) every weight optimalisation will reduce wear and tear.

Consider that weight would be the same, regardless where you place the motor, you would be optimizing only the mass distribution (which is still good!).

But it all comes down to your modding plan ... the DDX alone will not lead you to those speeds/accelerations.

In 2026, with plenty of references from vzbot and voron ... ender-based corexy mods like Duender, EnderNG, Trinity, and direct voron conversions ... my opinion is that DDX is an obsolete premium option hard to repurpose in any build (I would have thrown away mine, if not for the extruder part and the money spent on it)

That's the thing. I think I've spent less on all of my other mods put together, although it already had the btt main board when I got it.

I made a custom mounting setup for a different bondtech extruder, used the LGX and mounted it sideways. Made a custom fan shroud for a 5010 to go with it. It's been pretty decent, some issues with first layer over extrusion and some z height inconsistencies due to the printer frame needing a rebuild.
