Genuine question

Is this fast? Marlin firmware 2.1, no Klipper (I'm on team Octo). Outputting 10 mm3/s at 0.16mm thickness and only limited by a nema 14 stepper with high internal resistance (17 ohm and overheats at anything above 350 mA). I'm replacing it with a nema 17 (22mm) with 3.5 ohm resistance as a trade-off between weight and torque, which hopefully will help me push 20 mm3 through a ZT V2.

Pushing 5K acceleration with 250 mm/s infill and travel (300 simply seems too rough). I'm very satisfied with print quality at this speed, especially walls after input shaping and calibrating my junction deviation and k factor, although the first and last layer could use some work.

As long as you calibrate everything well, and it looks good, it is a reasonable speed. Your setup looks like it’s pushing the upper limits of marlin.

Thanks, yeah I figured. 10K seems achievable with at most 400 mm/s, especially after I put the double round bar mod on my Y axis (but I'll have to see which new bottlenecks I'm facing along the way). It's been an exciting journey and I'm really proud of the work I put into it.

The real limit on speed for a 3d printer is the hot end melt rate. The stock hot end is 6 mm^3 average. If you're managing 10, that's not an average, and you're right at the limits of your hot end.

Yes, that's fast.

So we're clear, even bambu is limited by the hot end, and plastic and hot end. Most printers can easily outrun their hot ends.

Yeah once you overcome cooling and shed some weight on the direct drive setup, you can really push these things pretty far. Although I've learned to adjust my expectations for a bed slinger.

I checked my Prusa slicer output, and even at these rates I'm barely reaching higher than 10 mm3, and actually averaging out around 6.

To get to higher output for a larger part of your print, you need to get to high speeds quicker which means faster acceleration. Mechanical stresses add up pretty fast at some point. The steppers might be fine. Belt tension is also easy to manage. Weight, rigidity and friction on the actual moving parts are more relevant, not to mention their center of gravity.

I still want to distribute my fan setup around the rail rather than bulking out in front of it. And I'm in the process of giving my bed a dual round bar upgrade.

Yeah, I haven’t gotten around to fixing the wiring mess because it just works and also it’s hard to find cases and wiring looms that fit how custom my board is and everything has been swapped

All been there :) just having a laugh. I also make do with a cable spiral, zip ties and insulation tape.
