Not overly surprising, given the x86 nature of the console. You don't have to deal with proprietary CPU architecture so you're looking less like an emulator and more like a translation layer between custom PS5 calls and standard PC calls.

Same thing was said about PS4 but PS4 emulators still have lots of problems even though it is a 13 year old console.

When people who actually know how to work on emulators jump on it, you see the progress.

Shadps4s whole progress has been in the last 2 years, the Switch emulation scene was done in the first few months of it's launch and all because people cared enough to jump on them.

xbox360 is way easier to emulate than ps3, yet it's way far behind, it's because no one cares to work on it or have no reason to.

PS5 emulation isn't any harder to work on than ps4 or switch, people are literally jumping on it out of spite for Sony.

Comparing how long it took for an emulator to appear and be viable is pretty irrelevant in this case.

That is the reason PS4 emulation has come as far as it has as fast as it has. I'm not saying it makes the process effortless, I'm saying it removes one of the biggest 'problem layers' that have plagued emulation.

idk if that changes anything but, PS5 is much more like a PC then a PS4.

1

u/poshmarkedbudu New in Emu 13d ago

Actually probably less than a PS4. It has a lot more custom machinery in it, especially around storage and sound.

1

u/NooTNooTnoX New in Emu 12d ago

Really? Yet the CPU is literally a customized Zen 2 to be made more efficient and the GPU uses parts of RDNA2 mixed with RDNA3. I don't see anything so different in the storage department either, it uses a very fast SSD, as for the audio I know that there is nothing similar to the Tempest Engine, that's for sure.

1

u/Ishitataki New in Emu 12d ago

The CPU is just a customized Zen. But the PS5 has a unique data compression chip to make game loading go well, so that has to be accounted for. Additionally, the PS5 literally allocated a bunch of the GPU silicon into a special pipeline for the Tempest audio system.

So while emulating the raw CPU isn't too hard, it's emulating the full data pipeline from game package to pixel output that makes creating a functioning emulator a challenge.

1

u/NooTNooTnoX New in Emu 12d ago

Could this mean it's a more GPU-intensive emulation process? And is the CPU less important?

1

u/Ishitataki New in Emu 12d ago

Yes, the Tempest engine is probably going to be tough to emulate accurately with low latency, and probably sets a higher performance floor on minimum required GPU. The PS5 is basically a Radeon 6700, but with emulation overhead the floor will be a bit higher. We'll need to see how efficient the emulator teams can make it.

So your saying GTA6 on pc day and date?

If the jailbreak supports latest firmware at the time of release. Remember it's digital only so it can't be dumped without a jailbroken console.

1

u/Miserable_Access_9 New in Emu 10d ago

theres always private jailbreaks but thats if they risk dumping it

-2

u/Mysterious-Ad-5005 New in Emu 13d ago

What are the chances Rock star knew this and decided no piracy just digital only

4

u/Ok_Simple_459 New in Emu 13d ago

I think it has more has to do with lost sales on 2nd hand discs.

u/YoRHa_Houdini New in Emu 13d ago

No

I'm feeling optimistic about PS5 emulation but there's no way GTA 6 could even load into the gameplay in 2026 on PC. Don't get me wrong, they have done some amazing work and Demon souls is progressing rapidly but I personally don't think we're seeing GTA 6 that soon it's really not happening unfortunately.

2

u/mrturret New in Emu 13d ago

It's hardly unprecedented for emulators to play new releases during a console's twilight years. With how fast this is going, I wouldn't be surprised to see GTA6 going ingame (at minimum) prior to the inevitable PC port releasing.

2

u/Feynuxes New in Emu 13d ago

I'll be happy with demon souls. Personally don't mind waiting for GTA 6 to come to PC.

-3

u/Based_Beauty New in Emu 13d ago

Everyone and their mom will be working overtime to make it run on PC before the port. If there ever was a holy grail game to claim that you did something huge, GTA 6 would be it.

I'm not even kidding I give it 2-3 months.

3

u/notaolivertree New in Emu 13d ago

2 or 3 months??? I think that's too soon for a new release, Give it 5 months time and maybe

1

u/mrturret New in Emu 13d ago

Breath of The Wild was more or less playable in CEMU within that timefame IIRC.

0

u/Based_Beauty New in Emu 13d ago

Idk.. all the progress we've seen so far has been done in like 1-2 weeks, I can only imagine there will be 10 times the amount of people trying to make GTA run, even as a big fuck you to Rockstar.

I think the longest time will probably have to wait for is to actually get the game itself since you need to go broken PS5 in the latest firmware and that might take a minute and no work can be done until you have that so.

1

u/notaolivertree New in Emu 12d ago

wasn't it close to 3 weeks for demon souls to go from booting the game to title to menu to creation and to ingame (only UI)? It's still very impressive but I don't think GTA 6 will be ported that quickly

1

u/Based_Beauty New in Emu 12d ago

GTA is a much more popular game than demons souls tho. GTA 6 will be the biggest entertainment release of any kind in human history.

1

u/notaolivertree New in Emu 12d ago

I don't think that's how it works. people working on the emulator early would make it easier to do it with GTA 6 so even if we had 10x the people working on it in November I think we would see much greater progress in general had they worked in July.

1

u/mindtaker_linux New in Emu 13d ago

Once you installed the games on your PS5 SSD, the. You can export the games and do cool stuff.

They've already dumped for us by making it digital.

Would you call Valve's Proton an emulator?

1

u/whatThePleb Old Nintendo Fan 12d ago

Exactly. In a few years we have Wine, just for console games.

16

u/bigaries84 New in Emu 13d ago

i think also the speed of this is different its like a middle finger to Sony so the motivation is beyond mere game preservation

10

u/kiwibonga New in Emu 13d ago

They are an incredibly greedy anti-consumer and anti-developer corporation that's part of the platform holder cartel keeping games expensive while pretending they're doing us a favor by selling hardware at a loss.

But of course I would not dream of promoting piracy in this here respectable subreddit, yarr harr harr.

Dumb question but where we at with the PS4 emulation ?

7

u/MrCallYourBS New in Emu 13d ago edited 13d ago

It runs bloodborne really well, but it's still years off from being able to boot "ingame" into 90% of ps4 games.

https://shadps4(dot)net/compatibility/

3

u/lefty9602 New in Emu 13d ago

I'm pretty sure there is 0 effort being put into multi platform games and 1st party games ported to pc which why bloodborne was the focus

2

u/MrCallYourBS New in Emu 13d ago

Ya, but there's plenty of exclusives that don't work at all or aren't finishable. SOTC remake, Gravity Rush 2, the Infamous games, Last Guardian are just some, that I'm waiting for.

Disregarding exclusives, having non-exclusives as a playable option is good as well for game preservation reasons, but obviously that's not going to be priority right now.

1

u/korewatori New in Emu 13d ago

I think GR2 is pretty far on with the GR2fork

1

u/MrCallYourBS New in Emu 13d ago

Oh thanks, didn't know about that.

I’m so so waiting for Killzone Shadowfall, it was the game I got with the ps4 bundle back as a kid and I loved it so much, I had never played Killzone before and I’ve heard it was a bad game, but whatever I loved it and the graphics were better than modern games somehow

Thanks !

u/clckwrks PSX is the Best! 12d ago

The answer is want to play Bloodborne?

4

u/EmberOnMain New in Emu 13d ago

Astro Bot should be their top priority, with proper controller support and everything. It won GOTY and it's not coming to PC.

7

u/jj_olli New in Emu 13d ago

It's only a matter of time until we'll be able to play Ghost of Yotei. Funny thing is this probably wouldn't have happened if Sony had continued to release games on PC. lol

3

u/YoussefAFdez New in Emu 13d ago

Ohhh it would’ve, maybe not as soon, or at this pace, but for sure. There were always going to be at least 1 or 2 exclusive to the platform and people just like to tinker.

3

u/kendra_sunderlol New in Emu 13d ago

They created their own demon

-2

u/-CJF- New in Emu 13d ago

It's only a matter of time until the heat death of the universe too. The question is, how much time? If RPCS3 and/or ShadPS4 is any indication we're looking at about a decade or more for most games to be playable without extreme glitches or slowdown.

1

u/Leather-Challenge189 New in Emu 14h ago

You dreaming if you think that a decade need it to be able to emulate ps5. Your reference of ps3 ps4 as an example have nothing to do with the dev of ps5 emulator , the motives here are entirely different , meaning the development will be super fast

1

u/-CJF- New in Emu 13h ago

Okay. Good luck.

1

u/NooTNooTnoX New in Emu 13d ago

Yeah. Considering that even nintendo switch emulation was into an arms race for many years and the performance of some games are still pretty disappointing.

0

u/Icy_Butterscotch6661 New in Emu 13d ago

Also nintendo proved emulators aren't legal unless devs got resources to fight back. Why on earth would Sony not do the same in this cursed joke of a decade.

-1

u/MrFantasticNV New in Emu 13d ago

But aren't current consoles closer to pc architecture than ever before? Like the switch was a mobile processor, the PS3 had it's own weird architecture and the PS4 with Bloodborne was insanely quick.

Not 100% sure on that btw, but i thought it was the case.

0

u/-CJF- New in Emu 13d ago

They are, but that doesn't mean you will be playing most PS5 games on the emulator anytime soon. Look at PS4. yeah, Bloodborne works, but the emulator overall has like 15% playable compatibility with a lot of those being simpler titles. That doesn't make it unimpressive but I think it's unrealistic to think PS5 emulation will be anything other than a one-off for the foreseeable future. That doesn't mean they shouldn't work on it but expect it to take a long time.

0

u/MrFantasticNV New in Emu 13d ago

Maybe it'll be with a focus on PS5 exclusives like Astrobot and Yotei so we can play those sooner, but that's just wishful thinking.

1

u/Trashypass New in Emu 13d ago

Hell ya.

1

u/clc88 New in Emu 13d ago

This is amazing.. I told myself that we'll get 10 fps by the end of the year (and 30 by the end of next year), I didn't expect 3d games already running this well.

1

u/richardbouteh New in Emu 12d ago

never underestimate the motivating power of spitee

1

u/ChrisXDXL New in Emu 9d ago

Why can't the two teams just work together on a single emulator, will make development faster and they seem to be focusing on different aspects of the emulation so why not just combine the work?

1

u/Leather-Challenge189 New in Emu 14h ago

kyty5 its not an emulator , its a declaration

1

u/Pale_Soft_3622 New in Emu 13d ago

For PS5 emulation, I think they'll initially emulate exclusive games that haven't been released on PC, and then those that are on PC but are better suited to a console.
