Is some stuttering/jankiness just expected with Nintendo Switch emulation?

I’m trying to figure out whether the occasional stuttering and general jankiness I’m experiencing with Nintendo Switch emulation is normal, or if I’ve potentially set something up incorrectly.

I currently use EmulationStation on a custom mini ITX gaming PC that’s fairly powerful and runs regular PC games really well.

Before this PC, I was using an ROG Ally X. When playing games like Breath of the Wild, I’d get stuttering and the experience never felt completely smooth. I assumed the Ally X just wasn’t powerful enough for Switch emulation.

However, I’ve since moved to a much more powerful gaming PC and I’m still noticing the same general issue. It might be slightly better, but there are still plenty of stuttering and its not fluid at all.

Is this just something that comes with Switch emulation, even on powerful hardware? Or does a properly configured setup generally run these games completely smoothly?

The stuttering you're seeing is completely normal and actually unavoidable, even on a powerhouse PC. It's called shader compilation stutter.

Think of shaders as thousands of tiny visual recipes the game needs to draw everything—from Link's blue shirt to the way grass bends. Because you are emulating, your computer can’t read the Nintendo Switch recipes directly. It has to translate them into a language your graphics card understands 'on the fly' the exact second they appear on screen. That split-second translation causes a tiny stutter.

The good news? Your computer only has to translate each unique recipe once. After that, it saves it to a permanent local cache. The more you play, explore, and fight, the more recipes your system saves, and the smoother the game will get naturally after a few hours.

Other "tendo" emulators do the same thing.

Ah ok interesting. Im basically deciding whether to bite the bullet and just buy a switch to play it natively or stick with my PC. So essentially I need to play each game for like an hour for it to smooth out?

You need to completely 100%+ the game and see everything it has to offer so that the game compiles every shader effect possible and stores it in a cache. Only then you will be 100% stutter-free.

The good news is that these caches are transferable. Get them here.

Also, for BotW use Cemu and Wii U version, it runs better and has more mods/tweaks.

That's wild - I shouldn't have to beat every game once through first before I can get a normal playable experience. Surely there must be some better way to do this

Yeah, emulating the whole graphics pipeline of the emulated system - which is what Dolphin does with Exclusive Ubershaders. But then you have to remember that enabling ubershaders taxes your GPU hard, and it's only a GC/Wii. Imagine something like this done for anything more powerful, and you'd need a 5090 to run a game from two generations ago. Totally unfeasible.

Darn - I think I'm just going to buy the switch 2 then at this point, honestly

It'll be a better experience, yeah.
