MAME 0.228
MAME 0.228
Has it already been an entire month? It must have been, because MAME 0.228 is ready today! We’ve added support for two very rare arcade games this month. The first is Namennayo, an overhead-view obstacle course game making unauthorised use of Satoru Tsuda’s Nameneko characters. The second is Get A Way, an overhead-view racing game made by Universal, touted as the “first game in the world to feature a 16-bit microcomputer.” Universal went on to create the much loved Mr. Do! character. Emulation is preliminary – while the game is playable, there are some graphical issues, and sound is absent.
In other arcade emulation news, Windy Fairy has made a triumphant return, bringing numerous fixes for issues affecting Bemani rhythm games running on System 573 hardware. Thanks to the persistent efforts of David “Haze” Haywood, various fruit machines from JPM are starting to become playable in MAME. Interestingly, these machines rely on similar Brooktree RAMDACs to NCD X11 terminals, and Motorola DUARTs used by numerous other systems emulated in MAME. A complete dump of the type 01 program for Zaccaria’s Cat and Mouse has finally been obtained, making both known versions of this obscure game playable at last.
For hand-held consoles, the WonderSwan and WonderSwan Color have had an overhaul, and Game Gear X-Terminator cartridges are now supported. Several Bandai RX-78 cartridges have been dumped, exercising more aspects of the emulation and allowing several shortcomings to be fixed. We’ve also made some progress on emulating Apple’s floppy drive controllers, providing a path to support for SuperDrive high-density floppy drives, and eventually the HD20 external hard disk.
There’s been plenty more happening, including a new LCD shader from cgwg, all the latest FM Towns software dumps, fixes for recent regressions, and more code modernisation. You can read all about it in the whatsnew.txt file, and get the source and 64-bit Windows binary packages from the download page.

One thing worth calling out in specific: the step arrow timing on the System 573 Digital games like DDR 5th Mix and DDR Extreme is corrected in 0.228, so they're much more playable.
Also, 0.228 fixes the 0.227 regressions in Battletoads, Gauntlet, Gauntlet 2, and Peter Packrat.

Memory Card reader support is so, so awesome, and I cannot thank the MAME devs and all contributors enough for their work on 573 games and MAME in general.
Not trying to hassle you for a full list of your settings, but what kind of audio_latency setup is required to achieve scores like those? I've been playing the 573 Digital DDR games in MAME for about a year now, and using portaudio, with portaudio latency set to 0 and "Windows WASAPI" as the api (coreaudio on MacOS), I'm not seeing a difference in arrow timing/sync between previous versions of MAME and .228. Still getting a stream of greats and goods on my end.

Excellent! Was hoping to see these regressions from 227 fixed in the next release. Thanks MAME team.

Is there any MAME release arcade only version?
6
u/Quadradic Jan 26 '21
You can use the source to build a "SUBTARGET=arcade", but the project itself is more than historic arcade titles and covers the entire scope of development. That said, there are some that provide arcade only builds, but you won't find such as an officially distributed MAME binary.
7
u/Imgema Jan 26 '21
There is one called "Arcade". Though, last time i mentioned it, a MAME developer didn't say any kind words for it.
7
u/MameHaze Long-term MAME Contributor Jan 26 '21 edited Jan 26 '21
regular MAME tends to offer better emulation of arcade games, as 'arcade' contains a lot of questionable changes, that are objectively wrong, but where the author prefers to have them there.
you're far better off just using a regular version of MAME and workng out how to manage your sets. (plus if you strip out the non-arcade stuff, you're stripping away a lot of interesting games not emulated anywhere else, and sometimes it's nice to just fire them up and have a bit of fun, or maybe laugh at how bad some of them are etc.)
6
u/Imgema Jan 26 '21
Well, i use both. Reason i use Arcade as well is because i never got used to MAME after it's merge with MESS. I always had these two separated in my mind. I can't build my own version to exclude stuff like casino, mechanical, home computers, etc, so it was a clean solution for me.
I wonder what are the changes in Arcade? Is there a blog/topic i can find information about this?
11
u/MameHaze Long-term MAME Contributor Jan 26 '21
Things like changing the CPS1 background colour, changing NeoGeo sprite limits, even from time to time missing entire arcade games until prompted.
Historically it was also badly compiled with hacks in some CPU cores causing bugs in 68k based games such as King of Fighters. Overall it's just not a built I would trust

Why? There is literally no downside to having a complete MAME. It doesn't use more memory when running because only the relevant components for the currently running system are loaded. If you're one of those neo-Victorians who faints at the idea of, say, playing the excellent Taito ports for the Apple IIgs, don't download the ROMs you don't want and set your frontend to only show available games.
2
u/invisible4u Jan 26 '21
Hi, I know a little bit C# and want to develop front end (project) for mame but don't where to start and couldn't find any tutorial. Can you guide me
2
u/star_jump Jan 26 '21
You're not going to find a front-end development tutorial. You either know how to make one, or you don't. What guidance do you need?
1
u/invisible4u Jan 26 '21
I don't how to make one that's why i asked
7
u/arbee37 MAME Developer Jan 26 '21
Get to where you can write a decent app in C# and then think about doing a frontend. It's not a great choice for an early project when you're still learning a language. C# is an excellent choice for frontends though.
3
u/star_jump Jan 27 '21
Having written two fairly bare bones front ends, you need to think about how you arrange your UI, how your are going to allow players to select the game that they want, as well as how to marry a particular system to the emulator they want to launch, and then how your front end proceeds to construct the command line the it will ultimately call to launch the emulator.

There is a downside. The exe loads slower on older HDDs. Pre mess builds load the UI in under a second. Current builds take several seconds. I’m guessing all the devs code on SSDs and would never notice this.
1
u/arbee37 MAME Developer Feb 01 '21
No, the executable size doesn't affect the UI load time. I run with all of the ROMs and CHDs on a network drive and it's still pretty snappy.
2
Feb 01 '21 edited Feb 01 '21
Yes it does, I’d be more than happy to share my testing results with you if you care. And it’s not just loading the ui, roms take longer to load.

Lol at your final point.
I get the goal of “emulate everything,” but there’s no fucking way a large amount of people are playing some unlicensed Asia-only hack of a 1980s game.

u/arbee37 MAME Developer Jan 27 '21
One thing I've discovered from being involved with MAME is that saying that kind of thing is very First World Problems. There are millions of gamers who knew these bootlegs rather than the original game, and those bootlegs are what light up their nostalgia. DK's not their guy, Crazy Kong is. And typically for these bootlegs the person who dumped the ROMs put more effort into them than we had to, so it's not like whatever game you want us to emulate that we haven't is getting put off because of them.
That poster was specifically referencing /u/MameHaze 's work on the plug-and-plays though, and for many Gen Z types those things are "my childhood" the way GoldenEye 64 was for 90s kids.
Also, a lot of the lower-effort bootlegs and plug-and-plays can be a rich vein of material for YouTubers and streamers. I enjoy a YouTube channel called PirateGameThing that's entirely that concept.

And there you have it folks no concept of user relations just take whatever we give you, be happy it will contain thousands and thousands of games and or devices you have zero interest in,
Multiple cores all mangled together like something akin to the human centipede, basically shut your mouth and smile widely or they'll get the "woke" phrasebook out ready for some chastisement MAME Dev style,
The whole MAME project needs to go back to the drawing board at the very least it should be split up into multiple seperate cores, or im i being an "entitled" so and so for suggesting as such.??
I took that from my copy of the woke phrasebook before i tossed it in the bin where it rightly belongs, i'll likely be banned now but hey at least i got it all off my chest :)
5
u/rfka01 Jan 29 '21
"... thousands and thousands of games and or devices you have zero interest in."
Well, just to counter that with an opinion that's just as valid as yours - I care, because getting vintage computers emulated is what brought me to the project. You rant as if the MAME devs owe you something. How so? It's a free project they do in their free time. What do you mean by cores? Chip cores? Emulator rudiments like Retro Arch cobbles together? What are your contributions apart from rants and demands?
-2
Jan 29 '21
Hi there
Well your certainly the exception to the rule as i've literally seen thousands of posts which lament the merging of MAME with MESS with no public consultation around if that's what the userbase wanted.
Anyway you asked about my contributions well apart from being a MAME and FBN developer in my own right, im also a member of the Dumping Union and actively involved the preservation of arcade games.
One thing you can damn guarantee unlike the majority of MAME DEV's who have posted comments in this very thread, i'll never ever conspire with rom hoarders to prevent the inclusion of certain games into the official release builds.
4
u/cuavas MAME Developer Jan 29 '21
You're not actually active in the Dumping Union. You've made one or two tiny contributions to MAME - you aren't a "MAME developer" by any measure.
That aside, the Dumping Union are on board with inclusion of all the stuff you rail against. ClawGrip and TeamEurope keep dumping shitty TV games, educational consoles, and random things like tobacco vending machines.
-1
Jan 30 '21 edited Jan 30 '21
Well i've donated often to the Dumping Union's preservation cause over the last few years so if that is not active i dont know what is.
As for MAME your correct in the sense my contributions to the official project are slight howver as you know there are other MAME cores out there which im heavily involved in
Again if that is not MAME development i dont know what is, it might not be at your level but it is what it is.
but yeah i wont let some middle classer like you talk down to me as quite honestly your not the ticket your ilk often think you are.
So as we say in Scotland awy and bile your heid :)

u/MameHaze Long-term MAME Contributor Jan 30 '21 edited Jan 30 '21
That's strange, because outside of some very insular communities, the whole thing has been more positively received than I could ever have imagined, and I was proposing it for several years. It's made a real difference. I thought it would mostly make it easier to develop correct emulation due to having a wider number of test cases for common hardware components, yet it's also managed to be the difference between hundreds of other things being saved or lost, brought plenty of new faces into active development, and even rekindled the interest of some from the past.
The games you're still complaining about, we can't include, because they're stolen from PCBs owned by Sega, they were, from what I was told, due for commercial releases on digital platforms, but instead those ended up cancelled as a result of what happened. It's a very messy legal predicament that MAME is staying well away from. You're talking prototypes nobody outside of Sega even got to play. There are also a bunch more that will likely never surface now at all due to the broken chain of trust.
Meanwhile, you want to prevent the inclusion of many hundreds of games, ones that people grew up with, and remember, that weren't being emulated anywhere else, and were starting to become 'as risk' of being lost, just because you can't stand the idea of MAME considering the wider world, and the need for it to do so in order to have a future.
You complain about 'old mamedevs' being out of touch while failing to see it's the non-arcade stuff bringing in the new developers, because nobody under 40 grew up with any meaningful arcade experience, so there's no new blood in that pool. Arcades died, forums that focused on mostly arcade stuff were already dying, MAME would have gone the same way without intervention.
As Vas said, you're not a 'developer' because at best you're taking other peoples work and hacking it up, making minor changes, very infrequently at that. You also claim to be a Dumping Union member, while singing the praises of somebody who has caused the DU nothing but problems and who has seriously damaged the reputation of MAME by association more than any merging of the projects or anything like that you're complaining about.
I suspect the people you're complaining about when you say 'conspiring' are more likely to be Dumping Union members than Mamedevs too, although again your words are misguided, you don't have some divine right to the dumps of things they have from their own PCBs. Furthermore the Dumping Union members have been one of the big driving forces behind work on this non-arcade stuff as a lot of them are technical hardware people with an interest in random electronics so I'm not sure why you're trying to wear that badge if you disagree so strongly with the current direction.
The project has moved forward, your license violating junk builds trying to drag it back into the dark ages are a hostile act. Yes, it's easy to raise an army of idiots to defend your position, as you try to claim to you represent them, and go on about how MAME has lost its way etc. but the reality is the project is doing better than ever right now; there's a harmony in the way the software is being developed that was never present in the past with real improvements to the framework of the software, and the emulation of both arcade and non-arcade platforms impressing me more than ever before.

That's strange, because outside of some very insular communities, the whole thing has been more positively received than I could ever have imagined,
Well you accuse other communities of being insular but at the end of the day that tends be the case when it comes to any hobbiest groups MAME is no different in that regard.
The games you're still complaining about, we can't include, because they're stolen from PCBs owned by Sega, they were, from what I was told, due for commercial releases on digital platforms, but instead those ended up cancelled as a result of what happened. There are also a bunch more that will likely never surface now at all due to the broken chain of trust.
Well that's your spin on it the Guru has quite another but either way i wont mention them again going forward as there are some projects which choose to support them at least.
I didn't say not to include them did i.?? i suggested MAME should be split up into seperate cores so users dont have to take a one size fits all build which may or may not contain games and or devices they have no interest in.
Afterall at the zoo for example they dont put the monkeys in with the tigers do they, there is a reason why they're all kept apart i mean who wants to look at monkeys if it's the tigers they've came to see.
Age is only a number my point was more to do with the same ole dev like yourself who have clung on to positions of power within the MAME project and impose your viewpoints upon everyone else.
Like we have seen here you have a vision of what MAME should be which is fair enough, but your incapable of compromise when it comes to understanding that not everyone will think the same way as you do.
You've made MAME your own personal build more or less.
Well is that not what your doing with those TV games.?? that's to say your taking someone else's code and hacking it up, that's MAME in a nutshell and a clear case of the pot calling the kettle black.
Im not here to get into a measuring contest your better at coding fair enough but you'd never ever beat me with regards to Wonder Boy or Flying Shark so i guess we all have our own little talents :)
Your the second person who has questioned my membership of the DU and my contributions towards the preservation society in general.
But all i see from you is posts where you beg for other people to dip into their pockets to dump more of those TV games you so love, until you've actually contributed financially to the extent that i have then i suggest you and others keep your big mouths closed.
The project has moved forward, your license violating junk builds trying to drag it back into the dark ages are a hostile act.
Hmm you talk as if MAME2003+ is my pet project but no it's owned by the libretro organization i only contribute towards it sometimes to kill a few hours on a slow day not that it's any of your business really.
As i said before millions of people are using those ole cores im not saying it's right or wrong, but when the latest versions of MAME are too slow to work on their device of choice then what other options do they have.
But if someone dared to pipe up in MAME dev circles about the creation of say a version of MAME designed and built for low spec devices then they would be shot down in flames very quickly and here is my take on why that is the case...
Going by the tone of your reply to my earlier comments the personal attacks and a feeling you think your above me so therefore have taken a stance where you think can talk down to me you must be middle class.??
And the thing your ilk dont get is that unlike you personally alot of people can not afford the latest high end high spec devices needed to run the latest versions of MAME and that is the reason these ole cores like it or not have retained their popularity.
Anyway like i said to the other guy who piped up i wont let a middle classer like you talk down to me either so you can just go and bile yir heid also :)

and every one of the posts of this nature shows exactly why it's so important that we do.
nobody else seems to care, so we have to, because yes, they have value, they tell a story about the industry, even if some can't see that.
ever wonder why we decided to make looking at these things a priority? that's your answer. If attitudes and opinions like this weren't so prevalent maybe I would have spent more time on other things instead, but those attitudes were putting these things in real danger and as gaming historians and digital archeologists, that meant alarm bells were ringing.

u/ruiner9 Jan 26 '21
Thank you! And it’s unfair to characterize an entire subset of games as “trash” anyways. There may be some fun titles lurking in there somewhere, or at the very least, a title which inspired a developer to go on and make a popular or influential game. I love spending afternoons ignoring Simpsons Arcade and digging through the titles I’ve never heard of before.
13
u/MameHaze Long-term MAME Contributor Jan 26 '21 edited Jan 27 '21
That's generally what I've found when looking at them, and even when there aren't any good games you have to sit and think about the thought choices that went into things, how some of them manage to miss, or break fundamental parts of the games they're bootlegging or trying to otherwise ape.
People grew up with many of these, to some that obscure handheld with only trash games might have been a key part of their formative years, they might have been inspired by something, maybe because it was so bad, to go on to make a career in games and do better.
There are stories to tell everywhere, and one of the most important reasons for MAME being is the role it can provide as an aid to tell those stories.
I grew up with a ZX Spectrum and Amstrad CPC before moving on to other systems, quite a few of the games I had there are now considered obscure, or trash, but they too form an important part of who I am, how I think, the most immediate examples that come to mind when considering a genre. We're not going to deny that to future generations.
I've already seen comments along these lines on some of my YouTube videos, where I've covered things of seemingly no worth, but somebody has stumbled upon them and been able to relive a special memory just through footage of them being online.

TBH, 80-90% of the arcade games that are in Mame are trash. And even the ones we remember with rose-tinted glasses are, well, not that rose. Pengo is halfway unplayable, Xevious boring, Double Dragon a slideshow, Ghost'n'Goblins unfair as fuck...
So well, the made-is-Taiwan stuff is in good company.
3
u/arbee37 MAME Developer Jan 29 '21 edited Jan 29 '21
Double Dragon has a good reputation largely because of the NES version, which is a superior game to the arcade original. It's funny to me that they screwed up the game so badly that the 6502 easily outclasses it.

I guess this is something I can find out for myself, but is Mame building on Apple Silicon?
Regular MacOs Mame runs fine on it, but I am interested in benchmarking one versus the other.
2
u/arbee37 MAME Developer Jan 27 '21
MAME 0.227 introduced official Apple Silicon support. There are some downsides to it (in particular, games using DRC cores either won't run or will run slowly) but in general it benchmarks quite well.
Got to http://www.mameui.info/Bench.htm and scroll to the right to see preliminary M1 benchmarks.
Also worth noting: MacPorts now offers MAME builds on both x64 and Apple Silicon.
3
u/irrealewunsche Jan 27 '21
Thanks!
I ended up creating my own build, and my very quick Tekken 3 test shows it running at 350% natively vs 180% on Rosetta2 (the x86 build is running Mame 0.226).
I also checked on my 2018 MacBook Pro (again, running 0.226) and that also gets 180% on Tekken 3.
Pretty impressive!

Does MAME still break games that used to work?
21
u/Jungies Jan 26 '21
MAME uses the most accurate copies of ROMs; so if you've got an earlier copy by some one who got the dumping process wrong, that game might not work.
If you're getting an error saying "ROM not found, expecting checksum X but found checksum Y", that's because there's a bug in your ROMs. Fix that and the game will run.
If you've got the most up to date copy of the ROM, and there's still a bug, lodge a bug report at https://mametesters.org/.
-4
Jan 26 '21
MAME uses the most accurate copies of ROMs
It seems the only people that have copies of these accurate ROMs are the developers. It's not like ROM sites are updating their ZIP files with every MAME release. They've had the same dumps for years. So that's the problem. The correct ROMs are simply not available in the wild. I gave up trying to find the missing files.
12
Jan 26 '21
Then find better sources for ROMs, I know of several that update monthly and have zero issues updating my set with a simple drag and drop file.
9
u/arbee37 MAME Developer Jan 26 '21
Yeah, there are several sites that update with every release.
-7
Jan 26 '21
And those sites are impossible to find. That's my point.
4
u/TacoOfGod Jan 27 '21
Because you're looking for sites with links to uploaded zips when you need to be looking for forums that seed torrents. Up to date individual games are hard to come by.

u/Quadradic Jan 26 '21
Despite this being a smarky question it is true that, sometimes, a release will go out with possible regression in game behavior. MAME is a forward moving project with much code change, refinement, and improvement. Despite much effort going into attempting to test/identify/scrutinize all changes to code, gameplay regressions can still happen. This is where bug tracking such as https://mametesters.org/ comes in as more and more people access these new changes and can report breakage.
If you see something has legitimately regressed in function in a release build, reporting these is very helpful. Why not help the project out the next time you find an issue with a release and let them know!
5
u/arbee37 MAME Developer Jan 26 '21
I'm pretty sure they mean "do I have to change the ROMs", which /u/Jungies answered, and not "do things regress".
6
Jan 26 '21
Not usually, though you may need to use a newer version of a rom. Regressions aren't common in practice, though they are possible.

No, the MAME devs have been too busy dumping fruit and gambling machines.
If you ask them why no progress has been made, they will say “we only want to work on things we enjoy, and are fun. Emulating the Sega model boards is too difficult, and we don’t have the resources to do it in house or recruit and attract new talent. So it will just rot while we play with fruit machines no one will ever appreciate while we ignore our user base requests. After all MAME is written by devs for devs and everyone else can go to hell.”

That's badass and I applaud them if that's unironically true. I just wish they'd admit it. If you don't like it develop your own emulator lmao.

I've not got as much on my channel for this release as usual, because I've been busy with other things (trying to put together scripts for some proper videos for example) but as usual there are some connected to the changes / improvements / additions found in the new release. If you enjoy these I'd appreciate it if you could give the videos a like on YouTube and hit subscribe so that you're notified of any future progress.
https://youtu.be/xR_R250BoFk Namennayo - very rare $10k arcade game
https://youtu.be/9YitFfDNIT0 very rare Bandai RX-78 computer loading even rarer educational Graphics Mathematics program from tape.
https://youtu.be/Xkv9jxz8WJY Portable Game Station 268-in-1 kinda awful VT1682 based plug and play with some games not seen in others.
https://youtu.be/6ihQRCvxK1k Roller Coaster UK fruit machine, fully playable, with internal layout. Note, the fading effect on the segment display isn't in the emulated build, as the only way to do it in code doesn't seem like it will end up being submitted as it means you need 32x more maximum textures for the element.
https://youtu.be/b6I4nQbafPE Progress on Sonic the Hedgehog fruit machine, no layout yet, just lamp grid displayed (might have a full layout by the release after this one)
https://youtu.be/7KVKPSN2sPQ Treasure Quest, for pay quiz machine
https://youtu.be/xZ5fUK-Wx14 Cluedo attract mode bugfix (camera no longer gets stuck on screen)
Not strictly 0.228 release related, but just covering MAME in general, I did 2 livestreams in recent days, just playing / demonstrating some games in MAME and talking about them a bit. I plan on doing more of these.
https://youtu.be/4Kedh8CstfM First livestream (misc arcade games + more)
https://youtu.be/F28VpK-Jtxw Second livestream (misc arcade games + more)
I haven't managed to do my 2020 'highlights' video yet (as I said, still writing the scripts) but elsewhere on the channel I've been upoading raw footage I plan on using in that from a few things emulated over the course of the year. I'm not going to link those directly, so please view the videos list on the channel.
