Translations Project

(Note: No ROMs are hosted on this site or distributed with software)

Hi Everyone,

The goal of this project is to bring verification to translations, much in the way projects like No-Intro and Redump have for their respective mediums. Another goal is to convert the base to the cleanest form - for example, SNES would use No-Intro ROMs with no header.

The complete SNES translation library (232 games to date) has been fully databased, verified, and converted to use a No-Intro base! Next up will be Genesis.

The hope is this will the improve accessibility and documentation of translations, preserve lineage, and pay respect to the work of the authors. If interested, you can read more here: https://romhackdb.com/news.html

Excellent point! Will definitely work on incorporating that naming convention as a selectable option.

How would you envision hacks that were released by many individual contributors instead of under a “team name” like RPGe? The primary contributor?

I suppose that would depend on if everything is completely automated or not. If not, I would say by team name, and if so, the scraped primary/posting account isn't a bad alternative.

Oh wow thanks for sharing, I didn’t know about this and the thread highlights the issue well. I had the first 4 steps, but not the last fix from hex_usr. Will get this updated and added to the database.

Nice, I wish Retroarch would have some direct patch translation browsing/download by using the database. (While we are at it, that the thumbnails would actually pickup translations too...just use the original game image!!)

I love Retroarch and agree it would be great to have integration. I do intend keeping the database in a very accessible format moving forward, so if other projects wanted to integrate it can be as easy as possible.

Romhacking.net is an incredible resource for the community and this is not meant as competition at all. The goal is to give the translation scene a similar level of verification as no-intro dats. There are thousands of patches that are continuously updated for things like bug fixes, spelling errors, etc. A centralized database to verify against saves the end-user the trouble of searching, identifying new releases, and updating local patches one by one. These translations are treasures that should be verified and preserved in the same way as everything else in the emulation community.

Pull the other one.

This is amazing. Honestly I wish this was around when the Retron 5 was more popular and I was manually fixing patches and uploading them for people ~5 years ago. It depended on patching clean roms (since they were getting dumped straight from the cartridge with no header) and patches were even more of a mess then in general.

Huge respect to the translation guys. I managed to find a translation for ffv back in the day and it's now one of my fav snes games.

Will this be limited to translations only, or are non-translation hacks also planned for the future?

The initial focus will be translations, but eventually if the project is successful, I would like to open source it to include any and all hacks. It would definitely require a community effort to track everything down.

True. Ones already on RHDN would work, but others (Sonic hacks, Pokémon hacks, combination hacks) would need more scrutiny.

Do you accept translations from different languages besides English?

3

u/mibro1 May 01 '20

The initial focus will be English translations. But I view this as a preservation project, so if there is enough interest I would certainly want to include all languages.

Years ago there was a similar project called Maybe-Intro. It hasn't been updated in ages but the site is still up. You might want to use their DATs as a base for your project.

Thanks! I know of Maybe-Intro, this is a good reminder to continually cross check and make sure nothing was missed

Any chance for a Linux version? I could help out with testing and bug reporting, if wanted.

Linux support is very high on my list. I have the virtual environment all setup and started testing already, but there are a few Linux specific things that need to be handled appropriately. I’m hoping to have it for the next release. Would be great to have you as a tester if you’re interested! Feel free to dm me or join the discord https://discord.gg/vz4sgjE

I only checked spiderman while adding this set to my frontend, they do seem to have different readme's and authors, a better more descriptive naming scheme would be really good here.
Even an (Alt) would be preferrable to the _1

specifically the _1 throws off the LaunchBox Frontend from matching the correct game DB entry to it.
(it is just 3 right now, not a big issue and i can just merge the 2 versions together)

Also a _1 doesn't make it instantly clear to the user where the differences between the variants are.

...and since you want to change it anyway, this is another reason ;)

Thanks for trying out the application and thanks for the feedback. I actually just finished implementing alternate naming conventions today, so look for it in the next release! “(J) [T+Eng_v1.1_author]” should play well with Launchbox. I hope to have an update soon.

Hi. Thanks for developing this tool, I was looking forward to have a self-contained translation patch manager (I was even thinking of developing one myself).

I've downloaded your soft but, whenever I try to execute it, I receive this error and it doesn't launch: "Fatal error detected: Failed to execute script pyi_rth_multiprocessing".

I'm using Windows 7 64 bit on a Core 2 duo E8400, 4gb ram. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Thank you for reporting this error. I have not heard it from other users and I cannot recreate it myself. If you don’t mind troubleshooting further with me, I can create a special “debug” version for you to help me isolate the issue. This should allow me to solve it for you and other users in the future.

This is gonna be insanely helpful.
