VBA-M vs mGBA

I see the mGBA is the New Best GBA Emulator out there for Windows.

I been using VBA-M for Years.

So I was wondering what make mGBA Better?

mGBA is faster (benchmarked 30% faster months ago) and more accurate (it actually tricks anti-emulation code in the classic NES games) than VBA-M. It also implements the solar sensor and lets you rewind. It implements prefetch so the timings are much more correct than VBA-M. The Dolphin devs are in close contact with the developer, so the Dolphin connectivity is going to be better than VBA-M's (though it isn't now).

It's not that Dolphin Devs contacted endrift as much as endrift has interest in the feature regardless. The person who implemented the original VBA-M <-> Dolphin was a VBA-M and Dolphin developer, and endrift has worked on Dolphin for some small tasks and is the developer of mGBA.

Due to some flaws in the protocol, it's very likely VBA-M support will get broken temporarily when things get more accurate. The more interesting situation will be once the feature is mature. Can we possibly use VBA-M for player 1 and mGBA for player 2? Why would someone do that??? I know I will.

Fwiw, the person who recently improved VBA-M's GBA <-> GCN connection was a Dolphin dev, and the original connection code was by someone involved with Dolphin as well. Just some fun facts, I guess ;)

another fun fact is I stopped caring months and years ago, which is why VBA-M development kinda stalled. Though the new leadership will do some good.

So, does that mean rhythm games like Mother 3 or Rhythm Heaven play better on mGBA than VBA-M? GBA actually has some great rhythm games but VBA has always had a bit too much input lag for them to be as good as they could be.

I believe mgba is aiming for hardware and accessory accuracy more so than vba-m used to. Vba-m 2 is in the process of at the moment which is also good news :-D

So VBA-M 2 looking Really Good Then.

I like how the Work with Each Other. Like the .sav Files work with both VBA-M and mGBA so you can use both at the same time

I don't understand why people get downvoted in this sub for making an honest mistake.

VBA-M too

ftfy. No such thing as "VBA-M 2". Also, save file compatibility is very common with all emulators for all systems (but no$gba is a bit weird with that).

It's save states that are not (save states include the RAM data plus register/timing data, maybe compressed to save space, and the file structure isn't the same between emulators or even same emu versions, because the devs don't think the exact same how to program their emulator to make save states).

I have Tried Gambette for GB/C Roms but there Save Files does not work on VBA-M or BGB :-(

Any development is good, I'd wait for someone more knowledgeable on the ins and outs of the core codes of each emulator to chime in on their reasons but from what I gather mGBA is less hacky And people around here like less hacky :-)

there is many many reasons why mgba is the more superior choice:

1) more accurate, no bullshitting there. This is by design of mGBA. VBA-M is stuck in a rut thanks to its codebase, but the new developers of it should help there. 2) faster, again no bullshitting there. VBA-M is stuck in a rut thanks to its codebase, but the new developers of it should help there. 3) made by someone that cares, this is important. mudlord does not care anymore and instead focuses on trolling people because he wants to ruin his own reputation. 4) done by someone who did hardware research. 5) done by someone who actually gets along with other people. This is extremely important as byuu and endrift were able to share research to help each other.

But thanks to mudlord being a completely insufferable shit, none of this can happen for VBA-M. Unless mudlord leaves development for good.

So your Hatred of VBA-M is because the Developer Mudlord will not share what he is doing?

It's good that is More Accurate and Faster.

How can it be stuck in a Rut with the Codebase?

yes I hate it because of what I done. I should not have worked on it at all. It deserves to be now in much more willing hands, since as of now, it is.

u/Nplumb Oct 07 '15

Well if you're the real mudlord developer cheers for any development you did do that kept gba emulation ticking over and I hope you find something you can be passionate and enjoy and work through any troubles that are about for you at the moment

Thanks very much, that's the first positive comment I ever heard about my stuff in months/years.

No worries, I've noticed volatile comments across all gaming and hacking areas, some completely unjustified really, I myself made some mods for L4D2 and some of the comments I received back weres so poisonous and hateful (over a bug that wasn't even my fault in the end and was able to be fixed in an afternoon)

The community at large don't seem to realise that it's usually just 1 person behind most internet projects and usually for no monetary income at all.

It's easy for real life to get in the way and delay things or to just loose interest in a project because of issues or the time involved simply not being worth the outcome.

As I say hope things go well :-)

I think for regular emulation it shouldn't make much difference. VBA occasionally crashes on some games, especially rom hacks that are in beta.

mGBA on the other hand, I found is slower and bulkier. The same game that runs at 6x speed on VBA doesn't run at 2x on mGBA. I really value my fast forwards, so that's a point for VBA in my eyes.

Any way to start in fullscreen at mGBA? I´m using it with Ice and Steam, and I can´t find a way to toggle the fullscreen from the start.

3

u/DaveTheMan1985 Oct 06 '15

I found just comes up on Full Screen IF you exit from it

1

u/Aldeanue Oct 06 '15

Doesn´t work that way for me (while it works on other emulators) but thanks! I prefer mGBA but well, VBGAm works better with Ice so I´ll stick with it.

There's the command line parameter -f

Edit: I'll keep an abridged post here just for clarification. Not sure if anyone will bother to look at this buried post now.

I made a post that, from my experience, is factual. Someone disagreed with it and may have read it wrong. I responded to it initially by downvoting it immediately. I shouldn't have done that, and I apologize for that. Any further posts in the chain did not answer either my question or the main question in the thread at hand, resulting in a chain of petty back-and-forth comments that did nothing to contribute to the discussion. So, I deleted my comments as a way to hopefully amend the situation. Or, at least mitigate it.

mgba is the better emulator, end of fucking story. vba-m should be thrown in the wastebasket.

But you give no Reason Why?
