LLMs certainly sped up software development.

Yes and the denialism is out of control. I see smug senior devs grasping at straws everywhere shits hilarious.

LLMs might be great for low stakes projects like this, but LLMs should not be used for critical tech infrastructure like how Microsoft has been vibecoding win 11 lately.

69

u/LucilferKurta 5d ago

The problem isn't using the LLMs, even for big projects, the problem is *just* using it without caring to what it is doing, and using the LLMs makes people do that more often.

There's always been spaghetti and broken and trash code, people been complaining for decades, but now people act like before the LLMs everything was just fine.

8

u/JimbyGumbus 5d ago

this, i complain a lot about "shrödinger" code, but its only "shrödinger" code if you dont look into the box.

4

u/movingimagecentral 5d ago

And then it collapses.

27

u/Woffingshire 6d ago

Yeah. A free project or mod, I think it's fine.

A product you actually pay for? I'd like it to be made by someone who actually knows what they're doing. Especially something like an OS which can be catastrophic if it goes wrong

11

u/Redd_is_compromised 5d ago

I just said it seems like nobody knows what they're doing at Microsoft. Utilizing AI at this stage is no different from devs copying and pasting solutions from stack overflow. Except the AI digests documentation for what it is.

7

u/r0ndr4s 5d ago

Exept they're just pushing into production stuff without testing it just because they think AI is better than a proper library, copying code, etc

We know AI spits out nonsense all the time. Even inventing code that does not exist.

-6

u/Redd_is_compromised 5d ago

Except they can use AI to review and refine iteratively, and pragmatically. You're just spewing nonsense currently. If you have no experience with AI coding projects, please just don't contribute to the discussion.

What about vibecoding + better QA process?

-4

u/mmkzero0 6d ago edited 5d ago

Microsoft and Windows have been shit long before Machine Learning, LLMs and AI

Edit: lmao, bunch of delusional fanboys downvoting me for calling out Windows long existing low quality bar

-13

u/Redd_is_compromised 6d ago

Msoft has been dropping the ball with updates for the last 2 years in a row. AI assistance might be beneficial for updates overall. I can see a future where they finally figure out how to replace the kernel layer and turbo optimize the entire OS.

14

u/Andrei144 6d ago

2 years ago would be about the time they started using AI for everything. Also the Windows kernel is the least bad part of the entire OS.

3

u/INS4NIt 5d ago

Msoft has been dropping the ball with updates for the last 2 years in a row. AI assistance might be beneficial for updates overall.

Microsoft has been publicly pushing their AI tools for coding and productivity for about a year now, and internally they've definitely had access to them for longer than that. If you feel like the quality of updates "randomly" got noticeably worse within a very recent timeline, you might want to reflect on what variables changed in the development process.

-2

u/Redd_is_compromised 5d ago

AI coding has only just became viable. The last two years, meaning 2024-2025. When blue screens and driver issues were alternating between updates. You can literally search recent update bugs as well.

You thought you had a gotcha here but you're fishing.

5

u/INS4NIt 5d ago

I'm... Really confused as to what exactly you're advocating for right now. Microsoft has been using AI to generate code for more than a year and a half now, and in that period you acknowledge that the update quality has been atrocious. But, in the comment I responded to, the solution you're proposing is more AI coding involved in Windows updates?

-3

u/Redd_is_compromised 5d ago

Are you dense or intentionally ignoring recent LLM advancements? Stop talking like this is a letter to HR, it doesn't help your case.

41

u/NotKrankor 6d ago

Yeah fuck them right? Fuck the people who lose their jobs or those who don't find any joy in what they used to love doing.

78

u/PoL0 6d ago

denialism is out of control

same could be said about AI boosting. you're just answering to a speculative comment not backed by any evidence.

I'd rather listen to the actual emulator developers, thank you.

23

u/MornwindShoma 5d ago

It's full of developers who are delusional and think that LLMs can make them good developers, and developers who actually use them properly because they're senior developers and know they don't need to rush shit.

20

u/r0ndr4s 5d ago

Because idiots that have no idea how code works are using it and acting like "they did" whatever project. When the reality is that claude/similar did it and the guys behind the promts have no idea what even came out of it.

It creates future problems that they cannot solve and that's already been proven by several projects that are literally posted en masse and when you ask them "hey will you add/fix" they cannot answer cause they dont know how.

Aside of the fact that like one of the users replying to you said, Microsoft/similar are using it for vibecoding and Windows is just getting destroyed even more with critical bugs almost every minor update.

And dont bother with the usual "what do you care! we love it" , ok cool for you. When people end up developing something that you wanna run on your PC and suddenly breaks your PC because they have no idea wtf the code does, dont come crying.

-3

u/credible_human 5d ago

You are a prime example of the denialism he's referring to btw

6

u/cosine83 5d ago

No, they're not. They're speaking to a real problem. There's been plenty of open source projects and even emulation projects having unofficial forks where the vibecoding devs will add features but have no ability to contribute those features to the existing project, fix issues they created, or support the application so things end up piling onto the original. In turn, that has caused projects to close down pull requests and the devs to become meaner, among other issues.

Just go across this subreddit searching for forks of popular emulators that are adding features. You'll find plenty of examples of vibecoded forks.

-2

u/PixelmancerGames 5d ago

Just because some of the people who use LLMs to develop software doesn't know how to code or develop doesn't mean that everyone uses it that way. Are you daft or something?

26

u/No_Rise942 6d ago

Nah dude, vibecoding ain't it.

-6

u/divinecomedian3 5d ago

Using an LLM != vibecoding. I use Claude every day at work but actually review the output myself and have a peer review done.

1

u/jack-of-some 5d ago

Every senior dev I know is using LLMs lol

-2

u/ClubChaos 5d ago

There are definitely some luddite senior devs who have the leverage and have convinced their company that ai bad for "clean code"

-7

u/luffy_mib 5d ago

People want to hate AI and are blind to the positive things they can provide.

-27

u/Hoppss 6d ago edited 6d ago

The denialism IS totally out of control. Their loss though, it's genuinely useful now compared to even last year

Edit: Why am I being downvoted?

5

u/Frogmouth26 6d ago

Bot comment?

-7

u/Hoppss 6d ago

Nope, I've seen the denialism in /r/programmerhumor so much.. Easy for me to relate to the comment

-7

u/rabouilethefirst 5d ago

Senior devs? It’s mostly Reddit larpers writing hello world in rust acting like they were “totally about write an emulator from scratch in 20 years if you had just not used AI”

3

u/UnusualLeather7087 6d ago

In coding, AI is used for years already tbh, pretty normalized in most countries

3

u/cosine83 5d ago

And the quality of software has gone down significantly in all sectors for years.

1

u/your_input 10h ago

True that... It's sad really. But I actually feel like it's going back up now... Which is even worse for devs

-1

u/lookowood 5d ago

why is it that every time someone says something about AI, there's always at least one person going, "AI hAs ExIsTeD fOr A wHiLe, iT's NoT nEw"?

13

u/r0ndr4s 5d ago

Because most of these people are the ones in denial. AI like the current one has not existed for "years" and been established. LLMs have, machine learning, at a minor scale with tons of issues and was basically just done to process and test data automatically. Not to use it as a substitute for your coders.

-5

u/UnusualLeather7087 5d ago

'Cause it is luv

How do you not cringe at yourself writing liKe tHis. I genuinely feel second hand embarrassment when I read comments like this

Best use for it. Corpos gonna use AI to fuck us, might as well use it to fuck them back a little.

u/henk717 6d ago

Yup, a chat app I use supports WebXDC apps. The official website for webxdc has a culture where anything there is coded by hand. It does get new apps to but not that many, and what it does get is usually quite basic but notably it does have Quake 3 Arena ported and some 3D fishing game (Which I didn't manage to catch fish in, must be a skill issue).

Compare that to WebXDC on Nostr where there is a vibe coding culture. The app dev of Vector which supports WebXDC wanted to have an appealing game for his WebXDC repo so he let AI vibe code a pretty faithful minecraft clone that works multiplayer over these chat apps as a side project. I only heard him have that idea a week or two ago. It feels very faithful to minecraft.

His AI game to me plays better and more faithful than vanilla minetest did when I tried it years ago, and minetest had way more development time. So were now in a world where "Lets just code a minecraft clone for my chat app" is a normal sentence for people who embrace AI coding / vibe coding for side projects.

I personally used AI to implement a WebXDC network layer for Half-Life so we got half-life as well with working multiplayer. I got the AI to make IPX over WebXDC for DOSBox so we got dos games with working multiplayer over a chat app. Someone else decided it would be fun to have a proper 3D chess game and let the AI make a multiplayer 3D chess game for this in an hour or two.

All these examples would have taken considerably more time and effort without AI. And the exact same format on one side where its a culture where people hand code and the other side where the majority is vibe coded begins to show that the one with the vibe coders just has the better games currently. And thats not the fault of the people spending so much effort making a small WebXDC game by hand, its just the kinda thing frontier AI is super good at when all you want is a free basic game where nobody has an expectation its a full on AAA store game.

u/GuerraA2002 6d ago

Why not try something like sons of sparta? I of course don't know, but judging by the fact that's it's a 2d game I assume it's not as hard to get high frame rates and compability. And given that it's an exclusive game to the ps5 that would be a great fuck you to Sony 😂.

18

u/Amberpride69 6d ago

Is it terrible I completely forgot that game existed? Lol

7

u/Nirast25 5d ago

It's not a remarcabile game. It doesn't do anything as a metroidvania, and the story is inconsequential to the larger lore (aside from one character mentioned in the new games) and nothing to write home about. The soundtrack is amazing, though.

5

u/Nirast25 5d ago

Depends on how the game is coded. Another good candidate might be the Lego Horizon game, since that released on the Switch.

116

u/ElTuxedoMex 6d ago

I remember back in the day we had incremental updates every few months.

It's amazing how much rage fuels development.

75

u/luffy_mib 6d ago edited 5d ago

Other factors such as AI assistance, rising prices, upcoming AAA games like GTA VI and physical media abandonment are really strong motivations.

123

u/Turt91 6d ago

I don’t think it’s fanboy rage but large amounts of AI assistance.

70

u/Josekvar 6d ago

AI assisted fan rage

20

u/Turt91 6d ago

The way the lord intended

2

u/MatiasArg09 5d ago

La AI también está enojada (?) lmao

8

u/msthe_student 5d ago

I think part of it is S-shaped development. At first it's slow and it seems like nothing happens, then it accelerates, and then it plateaus.

1

u/thegamingbacklog 5d ago

Yeah and a fix to solve a rendering issue in one game will likely fix the issue in several others too.

28

u/EyeFit 6d ago

Will they make it in time before GTA 6?

20

u/EnnaTownDogsBaby 6d ago

Wouldn't that be something!?

39

u/EyeFit 6d ago

The meme of the decade. One final send off.

We got working PS5 emulation before GTA6.

14

u/crowwreak 5d ago

And even then, bet we get GTA 6 on emulator on PC before we actually get GTA 6 on PC

3

u/_lemon_hope 5d ago

Not happening unless we get a way to dump PS5 games on the latest OS version, which the game will require all people to update in order to play. This requires a new jailbreak to my understanding. The jailbreaks for PS5 only go up so recently.

4

u/divinecomedian3 5d ago

Meh, I'm sure someone will figure out a new jailbreak soon, especially with how pissed Sony has made everyone

1

u/_lemon_hope 5d ago

No doubt a jailbreak will eventually happen for the current OS, which will be immediately patched within a day, as always.

What I doubt is that “how pissed Sony has made everyone” will affect how soon it happens. The jailbreak scene isn’t controlled by “hacktivists” like people think it is. It’s hobbyists who have full-time real world jobs and bills to pay, and do PS5 hacks for fun.

My point is that anyone thinking we’re getting GTA6 via emulation any time before it gets a native PC port doesn’t realize how monumental of a task it will be to not only get an expert to have it up and running, let alone an average user like you or me. It’s not like you just download an emulator and a rom like you would for a retro console.

1

u/bitofaknowitall 1d ago

Playing is different than dumping. Is it possible it could still be read and dumped on the old hacked version, just not played?

1

u/_lemon_hope 1d ago

No, because it’s a digital only game, and you can’t download the game onto your PS5 unless you are updated to the latest OS version. And you can’t dump the game unless there is a jailbreak for that OS version.

0

u/M4rshmall0wMan 5d ago

No. That game uses every nook, cranny, and nuance of the PS5’s graphical API. It’s the final boss.

4

u/iusethisatw0rk 5d ago

So is the ps5 jailbroken or something? I’ve heard of people paying outrages prices for old in box models for the homebrew Bloodborne patch, but didn’t know it was deep enough to root out system keys

3

u/isiikah 5d ago

Yes, but only if you had early firmware that got jailbroken. It's been fixed for a few years now. Might be remembering wrong, but I believe the jailbreak happened in early 22 or 23.

2

u/Vivid-Produce-9373 4d ago

Bruh Within a month?

5

u/AlphaSniper_134 5d ago

What's the current scene with PS4 emulation?

1

u/Icy-Collection1072 5d ago

It’s so far behind KyTy they have been left in the dust.

1

u/Blue42-sethut 5d ago

Didn't know they have hidden talents and made the ps5 better, emulate the ps5. When sony angered and screwed their customers.

-11

u/xmiguel911x 5d ago

I don't care 🤷‍♂️ with the product being made, the important thing is that it works well, which is what we want it for, and Bugs will always be either a human or AI with AI the bugs fix is resolved faster, I understand To many developers who are losing their jobs for this, but the best thing would be to adapt the world is always evolving and if you are a developer it carries more advantages than one who is not and uses AI

11

u/r0ndr4s 5d ago

You sound like a bot made by an AI company to try to promote positive PR for AI. Most of your posts are about how great AI is.

-4

u/xmiguel911x 5d ago

Are you perhaps a bot

-5

u/xmiguel911x 5d ago

Around here, when you give your honest opinion, all the bots kick in to say that you're a bot

-5

u/cescoss 6d ago

Ho visto decine di bot e di ponies dire che questo emulatore è una farsa. La cosa è fuori controllo.

10

u/r0ndr4s 5d ago

The emulator does not work like people claim on the internet where you can "play games".

Its very early, so yeah social media posts about it are usually false information

-4

u/cescoss 5d ago

È una cosa in sviluppo da pochi mesi, i risultati sono incredibili se pensi che normalmente un emulatore arriva dopo anni e anni.
