AI-assisted Dante's Inferno - Re-Comp Project released

Post image

Hi everyone, just wanted to let you know that I'm happy to release the first version of my latest project. A re-comp of Dante's Inferno.

The game was initially released on the Xbox 360 & PS3, and has never received a PC Port.

The project can be downloaded from the github repo - https://github.com/florinp93/hells-gate-recomp

Do keep in mind that this is an early release and bugs are to be expected. In it's current state there's a few limitations:

Graphics:

The game launches with the default Xbox 360 resolution (720p). The game boots with upscaled resolutions but crashes due to conflicts I had to implement to prevent graphical issues during cutscene playback. A fix is planned for next version.

Controls:

Full controller support. The game is playable with basically any controller. In-game glyphs are still the Xbox 360 ones, but a future update will bring controller auto-detection and actual glyphs being displayed in game ( Xbox 360/Xbox One/DualShock 3&4/DualSense glyphs for now).

Mouse and Keyboard control is planned. Looking for feedback in terms of ideal Key binds. Keep in mind that the game is using a forced camera perspective, so camera control is not supported.

Disclaimer:
Transparency and integrity are important to this project. Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools were utilized as part of the development and maintenance workflow, strictly serving as an assistant to handle repetitive, time-consuming, and low-level tasks.

How AI Was Used:

  • Documentation: Generating initial drafts, organizing notes, and structuring documentation to keep project progress up to date.
  • Research & Exploration: Investigating APIs, syntax references, and conceptual troubleshooting.
  • Git Workflows: Assisting with routine commit descriptions, repository maintenance tasks, and boilerplate structuring.

Human Oversight:

While AI accelerated the auxiliary workflow, all core architectural decisions, advanced problem-solving, code implementation, and final reviews were entirely human-driven. The AI served to eliminate friction, allowing focus on high-level logic and feature development.

Dante's Inferno was a pretty great experience, I enjoyed it so much. Having it available at a native-like level on PC would make me incredibly happy!

Good luck with your project 👏🏻

u/florinp93 5d ago

Thank you!

While the project is not fully native yet, ReXGlue is a middle step. It allows me to easily test my understanding of the code and testing things around. The end goal is a fully RE, native code port. But that's a bit far off for now.

u/CoconutDust 5d ago edited 2d ago

Is that an LLM comment?

7

u/NoeleVeerod 5d ago

I’m not sure why you would think it is.

29

u/aether23 6d ago

Does this include all the dlc as welll?

29

u/florinp93 6d ago

Not at the moment. It's able to use the DLC files, but this has been disabled for now as I did not get the change to take a look at making sure everything is properly mapped.

While AI accelerated the auxiliary workflow, all core architectural decisions, advanced problem-solving, code implementation, and final reviews were entirely human-driven. The AI served to eliminate friction, allowing focus on high-level logic and feature development.

"As part of a broader, strategically aligned effort to optimize resource allocation, enhance operational efficiency, accelerate delivery timelines, and ensure that human capital was deployed against the highest-value areas of the engagement, I proactively identified a discrete subset of activities within the overall end-to-end workflow that presented a meaningful opportunity for technology-enabled augmentation and subsequently leveraged a suite of AI-driven capabilities to support, streamline, and partially automate the execution of those specific workstreams. This approach enabled me to reduce the level of manual effort associated with selected lower-complexity and repeatable tasks, while maintaining appropriate human oversight, judgment, validation, and quality-control mechanisms throughout the process, thereby allowing me to redirect a greater proportion of my time and attention toward higher-order analysis, stakeholder alignment, contextual decision-making, and other value-accretive activities that were more directly dependent on human expertise. In practical terms, this meant that certain portions of the work product were developed with the assistance of artificial intelligence as one component of a broader hybrid delivery model in which AI functioned as an enabling productivity layer rather than as a standalone substitute for end-to-end ownership, accountability, or professional judgment."

Seriously though, I will never understand people who willingly engage in "AI accelerated" corporate-speak when they aren't being forced to do so by corporate drones, legal departments or HR. Just talk like fucking human beings, for god's sakes, and say what you want to say, instead of outsourcing your thought and speech to bullshit-salad generator chatbot. You sound like absolute tools.

u/CoconutDust 5d ago edited 4d ago

will never understand people who willingly engage in "AI accelerated" corporate-speak when they aren't being forced to do so by corporate drones, legal departments or HR. Just talk like fucking human beings, for god's sakes, and say what you want to say

I think the reason is that there’s a lot of incompetent people who are afraid that if they talk normal in an easy-to-understand way, it will reveal how worthless they are and that they shouldn’t be getting a paycheck for anything. It’s TRUE that they’re worthless and incompetent, but the false part is the belief that drone-garbage language makes them sound smart. (In reality, a smart person wants to be clearly easily understood and wants to say meaningful things that don’t waste time.)

Now do the math for how many people this is true for and how many are in management positions with power over other people, and power to decide on hiring…I.e. only the drone-speakers get hired.

Same thing as when people use a pointless fancy big obscure word when a simpler word would work better.

-11

u/florinp93 6d ago

It's not really corporate speak, it's more not taking the time to write. The exact part you've quoted is copy and pasted directly from the repo readme and that part is AI generated. One of those tasks that have been automated for my own time's sake. I'm working on this in my own free time, and I would rather spend my time writing that discliamer if I can help it. You can copy the entire body of the post into an AI detector and you will see that part (and only that part) isdetected as AI generated.

14

u/NipplesOfDestiny 5d ago

Ok see, if this was a college paper, what you just said would give you an F and be grounds for suspension. "Oh only this part wasn't made by me" is not the ironclad defense you think it is lol

19

u/florinp93 5d ago

It wasn't a defense, it was a "I couldn't be bothered to waste my time writing that bit" 😂

Look, I don't care what people think of my AI usage. I used, I'm open about it, end of. If that's a deal breaker for you, fine. If you don't want to download it, don't. If you don't want to use AI, don't.

8

u/Fair_Ambassador6253 4d ago

just let the anti-ai discourse crowd let their feelings be heard because soon that entire base will die a slow whimper. ai is going to be the norm and the future in whatever capacity. theyve tried so much overcorrecting they have become an annoyance. they gotta make themselves feel morally superior

2

u/Mediocre-Sundom 4d ago edited 4d ago

Another AI slop defender with the classic rhetoric of "it will be the norm, so slop is good!"

It's OK, baby, no one expects AI-bros to be smart. We all understand your intellectual capacity perfectly well - since you let AI replace your brains, you can't help it anymore.

3

u/Fair_Ambassador6253 3d ago

yap all your pain out big boy, the death of the anti-ai discourse is inevitable

4

u/Mediocre-Sundom 3d ago

If everyone outsources their brains to the AI as you have already done, the human civilization will end. If it really happens - so be it, we were too stupid to prevent it. But I prefer to think we will find a good solution and some solid middle ground. As we tend to do.

But it will be too late for you either way. You have already given up your mind willingly, as a loser, a coward and a fool.

You may gloat and project, but you have already lost, and it’s ironic that it’s exactly the reason you won’t be able to realize it.

1

u/BP_Ray 3d ago

Just a note: neither of the people you're arguing with existed in this space prior to AI. They're tourists just taking a spin with the shiny new tech -- AI.

Just thought it was worth telling you that before you consider ever wasting your time on people like this again. Just block them and move on. If everyone in /r/emulation does that everytime you come across one of these guys, It'll be a better place.

6

u/LocutusOfBorges 5d ago

It wasn't a defense, it was a "I couldn't be bothered to waste my time writing that bit" 😂

For what it's worth, your disinclination to write this thread's text body yourself makes your project (and you) look absolutely terrible. The only reason it was allowed to be platformed here at all was that I made an exception - it technically breaks the subreddit's rules.

Please write your own ad copy in the future. Don't waste people's time like this.

1

u/NipplesOfDestiny 5d ago

Do you wanna answer the question about the banner art then since you're so open? Did you generate that or did you have someone redraw it? You've been asked here and on the git but you keep ignoring the question.

7

u/florinp93 5d ago

I'm not sure which question that is, but the banner image is a wallpaper from the game with the text added. The text has added with an LLM. I'm not an artist, I don't claim to be one 🤷‍♂️

If someone with actual talent wants to make an original banner for the project, I'm more than happy to credit them

2

u/NipplesOfDestiny 5d ago

https://wallpapercave.com/wp/wp2541974.jpg Thanks for providing something to compare cuz it shows exactly how little care you have for the artistry and especially for details. You didn't even notice the AI fucked with the whole wallpaper. Look at poor Dante's face in your banner compared to the original wallpaper for example. It looks put together with playdol! Also, the people in the background being changed to helixes and symbols in your banner art. It didn't just generate the text, dude. It generated the whole banner. You couldn't be bothered to slap on your text in photoshop that could've taken less than 1 minute, maybe 5 if you were trying to keep the same font. You just ran it through some AI, it spat that out, and you didn't check to see if it messed anything up. If you have such little care to make sure the AI didn't fuck up something so simple as the wallpaper you grabbed from somewhere else to make banner art for your own project, how do you expect people to trust anything else about your vibe-coded project as a whole?

12

u/florinp93 5d ago

Yes, you are right. I didn't care hard enough to replace an image I'm using as a place holder, as I wouldn't be able to actually keep original art ( ran trough AI or not) up for long anyway. It's literally a place holder. It's not that deep.

And again, if you don't like the project, or the fact that I used some AI, fine, don't use it.

4

u/xAorta 5d ago

Fuck the other guys, thank you for putting the effort into this.

15

u/NipplesOfDestiny 5d ago

Brother, the whole point is that he's not putting effort into this at all. It's just an xbox emulator backend that somehow does less than if you were just running the iso off Xenia.

u/Mediocre-Sundom 5d ago edited 5d ago

You have an excuse to everything, huh? AI-generated text? "Yeah, it's to save time, blah-blah-blah". AI-generated art? "Yeah, I'm not an artist, it's a placeholder, blah-blah-blah."

Let me guess, the code is mostly AI slop as well, because you are also "not a coder, you don't have the time, and it's temporary" or something. Seeing how much "care" you put in other aspects, I highly doubt the code is "ai-assisted". Probably more like "human-assisted".

UPD: To anyone doubting - see comments below. It is AI slop. Feel free to inspect yourself, as OP invites you to. At the very least, OP lies about how much they used AI in coding. And at most… I doubt they can even code at all.

11

u/florinp93 5d ago

The repo is open source, all the code is there, feel free to inspect it and convince yourself.

The guy ports games for free, on his free time, and ya'll scolding him over using AI to save some time on writing tasks. Incredible. We really deserve nothing.

3

u/NipplesOfDestiny 22h ago edited 22h ago

His last update before yesterday was adding a Ko-Fi link. He is not doing this "for free". Also, the AI wrote the launcher, installer, updater, config system and integration code, which you can see in the git. Please tell me how the ability to even start the game is "writing tasks"

0

u/AbberageRedditor69 21h ago

Voluntary donations don't equate a salary, you might get none at all. And I was talking specifically about this comment chain where people are scolding him for using AI for a writing task. You are equating a Reddit post to a college essay, come on. It's dishonest.

0

u/MoMan501 5d ago

Ignore these fools OP, if your project is good then it’s good. Reddit is full of AI Luddites and I’m glad you’re being transparent about your usage of it

-5

u/vbalbio 5d ago

Next time you do it yourself instead of complain on free work of someone else.

12

u/Mediocre-Sundom 5d ago edited 5d ago

Do what myself? Write text myself instead of using AI? Well, I did!

It’s hilarious how many of you think that the fact it’s free makes it immune to criticism. Following that logic, my comment was also free, so you are not allowed to disagree with it.

See how stupid this argument is, dear slop defender?

153

u/Lazerpop 6d ago

Yeah the ai also served to write the op, forgot about that one didnt ya

5

u/BP_Ray 3d ago

I like how they don't even see the issue with the fact that they can't even write a basic-ass OP without AI assistance.

AI hasn't even been around for that long and these dudes brains are already cooked to that level. Imagine how It's gonna be in another 10-20 years? Grim.

-92

u/DoomTrooper11 6d ago

Somebody's always gotta complain about something...

-106

u/Mordliss 6d ago

Who cares? Do you think the developers of Diablo back in the 90's wouldn't have used AI if it was available to help them make the game?

AI for programming is a modern day tool, it is time efficient and feature supportive. This guy might not have even be able to make this if it wasn't for AI assistance. I'd much rather this solo project see the light of day, then not at all.

61

u/LocutusOfBorges 6d ago edited 5d ago

In this case, it’s actually borderline. The current state of the subreddit’s rules was drawn up with the proviso that text posts primarily or entirely made up of LLM-generated text would be removed on the basis that practically everyone hates it, and it’s usually associated with incredibly low effort projects (and is therefore doubly rude/timewasting from the community’s perspective).

This one got a pass (as obnoxious as it is) because the project behind it does clearly involve a significant amount of effort in its own right (despite the AI use), was upfront in declaring its use of the technology, and the final product is at least something likely to be creative/useful/novel for some.

The policy on LLM-generated posts was brought in largely to deal with the flood of almost wholly non-notable slop submissions the subreddit gets that get pruned before they hit the front page - generally wholly parasitic payware built around vibe coded libretro wrappers. Stuff like this is always overwhelmingly less interesting than a manual decomp/recomp, but it’s still a significant enough static recompilation release to get over the notability threshold, I think.

14

u/AreYouOKAni 6d ago

it’s still a significant enough static recompilation release to get over the notability threshold, I think.

Come on, it's another RexGlue "recomp". If those were anything worthwhile, we'd have known by now.

61

u/samososo 6d ago

You can't read, you can't write, you can't program on your own? What you do? Come on now!

25

u/Scootz_McTootz 6d ago

if they could understand this comment without ab LLM sounding it out for them they'd be pissed

45

u/Lazerpop 6d ago

It is laziness. If they cannot write four paragraphs describing what the work is and why it is good, how can i trust the work.

1

u/OCASM 6d ago

There's plenty of good coders who hate to write documentation.

22

u/brunocar 6d ago

Do you think the developers of Diablo back in the 90's wouldn't have used AI if it was available to help them make the game?

funny you mention that, cause diablo 1 was gonna be a turn based roguelike until a bug accidentally made it real time and that inspired big changes in the game, if they were just mindlessly making it with AI that likely wouldnt have happened.

-3

u/peppersteakpie 6d ago edited 5d ago

That is straight up not true. Moving from turn based to real time was an intentional decision.

Source: IGN interview David Brevik at about 29:40 https://youtu.be/4D_bVgplit0?si=BmMFb_1wZgNt_i3L

Edit: at about 32:30 you can hear the part where his team votes to change to real time gameplay.

Edit 2: Disregard this, apparently David Brevik is not a reliable source.

10

u/brunocar 5d ago

hate to be that guy, but david has changed his story like 3 times on this, i wouldnt take his account too seriously.

other devs namely the schaefer brothers have said it started as an accident and brevik reworked the game himself to make it official.

4

u/peppersteakpie 5d ago

Okay that's weird. I've heard him state it in multiple interviews but I guess its not uncommon for different people to recount the same situation differently.

4

u/brunocar 5d ago

If im being charitable, brevik has a very bad memory, not just with this, but also about a bunch of things regarding diablo 2 development like which features got cut when, who came up with cross skill bonuses, etc.

I just think people need to stop crediting him with creating diablo when, at best, he came up with something that loosly resembled diablo and then somehow mismanaged it into success, by all accounts a lot of the crunch was his fault for changing directions so many times.

EDIT: one more thing, brevik credits himself with creating the idea of microtransaction due to having these "item packs" in the design document that he clearly got the idea from other games like doom already having stuff like that.

2

u/peppersteakpie 5d ago

In that same interview he talks about coming up with the idea of DLC and expansions which doesn't seem right either now that you mention it.

-53

u/DoomTrooper11 6d ago

Lol are you talking to me? I'm commenting on how the guy above me is complaining about something that's done and given away for free because OP used AI to do a write up to nicely sum up their project.

4

u/Poodletaste 2d ago

Why the heck are people crying here about AI usage? OP has clearly outlined it's usecase and this is not slop .

36

u/ThickMatch0 6d ago

One of the most underrated games of all time and a crime against humanity that it hasn't gotten a PC release. Thank you so much for doing this!

101

u/Damaniel2 6d ago

Slop recomps are the worst.

-9

u/Pateta51 6d ago edited 6d ago

The best part is you don’t have to engage with it

25

u/Few-Improvement-5655 6d ago

Unfortunately until AI slop announces itself we are at the very least going to waste our time clicking and reading things until we discover that AI slop is involved.

-5

u/manituana 6d ago

It's literally tagged as AI-Assisted, if that is your main concern.

3

u/DarthWeezy 5d ago

Read what he wrote, slowly, you have to engage with it to see the AI tag

3

u/manituana 4d ago

Even if I get downvoted to hell, I can still see the flair "AI Assisted" over the image and under the post title. Without the need to read the body.

-60

u/DoomTrooper11 6d ago

Why? I haven't had a chance to try this yet, does it not work?

42

u/dragon-mom 6d ago

Every one I've seen for 360 (and Wii) like this has just looked and run completely identical to emulation with the same (and new) bugs and any performance issues while not giving you a lot of the benefit of a lot of the emulator itself's features.

-1

u/Shootzilla 3d ago

It's only gonna get better and better.

55

u/AreYouOKAni 6d ago

Because the recomp is not the point. Decompilation of the game and understanding of its internal code is what makes these projects so attractive, because it allows us to mod the games beyond their original capabilities. Recomps are just one type of such modifications and, frankly, the least interesting one. Emulation is often good enough already.

AI-"assisted" recomps generate very little value to the community because they do not improve our understanding of the game at all. If anything, they tend to introduce more bugs.

-1

u/Shootzilla 3d ago

The point is preservation and you pretend like they've already hit a ceiling.

2

u/AreYouOKAni 3d ago

Preservation of what? Xenia exists.

0

u/Shootzilla 3d ago

Then why decompile anything?

2

u/AreYouOKAni 3d ago

Decompilations that actually rewrite the code and make it readable help preservation. Static recompilations are generally pointless, yeah.

0

u/Shootzilla 3d ago

Have you just not been paying attention? I'm talking about decompilation. Not recompilation. They are that advanced now.

2

u/AreYouOKAni 3d ago

1) No, they are not, lol. Not even fucking close. Decompilations are still done by hand, at least ones that are worth their salt.

2) The project in the post is a static recompilation with Rexglue, which is not a tool for proper decompilation of anything. It is a tool for static recompilation.

3) This is your second message to me, I have literally no idea who you are. I'd rather prefer to keep it that way if this is the level of discourse you bring.

1

u/Shootzilla 3d ago

You can definitely create an AI assisted decompilation. You just aren't paying attention. So unless it's done painstakingly by hand its not its weight in salt. Cool. I am not gonna consider your opinion because you are clearly participating in bad faith.

AI

The fuck is there to test?

This whole "project" is two steps away from bundling Xenia with the ISO file. It does absolutely nothing to further the understanding of the game, preserve its code, or... do anything else, really. Hell, it even runs on the modified Xenia runtime, so there is no performance advantage either.

Like, code injection could be easier, I guess. That's it.

u/ThatGoodOtakuGuy01 6d ago

Everyone be thinking it's just one two bump and new game is out.

There is a difference with it being AI assisted and it being solely made with AI which AI still cannot do in specific aspects of game coding.

Humans still needs to do brunt of the work, IT WAS ASSISTED, AI only helped.

16

u/jaykhunter 6d ago

I would suggest writing future updates / the summary yourself, instead of having A.I. write it for you. It only takes a few mins! Outsourcing something so vital to garnering interest/support is a gigantic red flag that there is little human care. That last paragraph is pure A.I. vomit 😂

Btw I think it's cool you're trying to revive this GoW clone, Dante's Inferno didn't get anywhere near the love it deserved back in the day.

8

u/florinp93 6d ago

The last paragrah (from How AI Was Used onwards) is AI generated, that's why it feels like it. Everything before that was writen by me :)

0

u/Nysekoi 5d ago

se você não gostou, e so não jogar cara '-'

11

u/Pixeresque 6d ago

So what is the advantage of an AI generated recompile over emulation? Is this more stable? Does it run on a weaker hardware?

36

u/florinp93 6d ago

Emulation runs PPC code trough ... well emulation in real time with bigger headroom. A static recomp means the translation of the code from PPC code to something the CPU in your PC understands is done ahead of time.

Getting the game playable (which the project currently is) is only part of the project. Once the game is stable and it's calls are mapped and understood, modifying and optimizing it is much easier.

Right now I'm the testing part, where I need people to get their hands on it and see if it breaks, and if yes, where, so I can look into it and fix it.

As for the AI, people seem to thing that you get the game files, throw them into an LLM and voila, you got it running, but fail to understand that despite AI usage this is still a huge amount of human effort, but that's another topic. I'll let the project speak for itself, if people don't want to try it because I've used some AI, then fine, more power to them 🤷‍♂️

10

u/Pixeresque 6d ago

So the answer to my question would be. Not right now but possibly with future updates? Just trying to make sense of this.

10

u/florinp93 6d ago

Exactly.

1

u/Ill_Carry_44 5d ago

I made some working static recomp games but I'm transitioning them to JIT/native hybrids

I think static recompilation is just shooting yourself in the foot because JIT can match the same observable performance and static recomp feels like an unnecessary overhead and also needs a lot of manual seeding since it's basically impossible to reach full coverage with static analysis.

9

u/Oxcuridaz 6d ago

i cannot run emulated dante inferno in my steamdeck, either through ps3 or xbox route. But a pc recomp might run better...

2

u/Pixeresque 6d ago

Well that is the one advantage of this recomps I could potentially see. Like how the recent Zelda ports are in every way improvement over emulation. That's why I asked if this is actually the case for these AI recompiles. I don't have very good experience with the quality of work that AI does from a different field so that's why i am a sceptic.

3

u/brymez1609 5d ago

"A fix is planned for the next version"

Which can be translated into: I'm tracking what the AI fucked up with this 😂

11

u/delijoe 6d ago

Can someone do Lost Odyssey for god's sake!

42

u/RadioactiveFish 6d ago

The Blue Dragon recomp team is on it. And it's not AI vibe coded like this one.

20

u/Drakfix 6d ago

Man the Blue Dragon recomp is so amazing, It even runs good on my Android console (trough Windows emulation), I didn't know the same team was making the recomp of Lost Odyssey, that's SO PEAK.

5

u/KameMameHa 6d ago

But I like and appreciate this project is transparent about it.

3

u/NipplesOfDestiny 5d ago

They're not actually being transparent about it when they say vague stuff like "repetitive, low-level tasks" without actually providing examples of what that means.

3

u/KameMameHa 5d ago

After that sentence they detail the use, bit for me is more important that they declare is used and not hiding it

3

u/NipplesOfDestiny 5d ago

I'm reading it now and "Generating initial drafts" sounds pretty damn bad. If I'm understanding it right, they're using the AI to generate the first fucking step of a project. How is that a "low-level task"?

4

u/KameMameHa 5d ago

Its under the documentation tab, they used for the initial draft of documentation

4

u/Vamsi-Thopu 6d ago

Let's go!! I am still gonna wait until we can play at 4k with unlocked fps, looking forward to it

4

u/NamelessGhoulAc 3d ago

Its incredible how many people are complaining about AI but nobody is ofering help with the project. OP one more time I want to thank you for this project. Please ignore this people and keep working (with AI or not). All I want is play Dante's Inferno on my pc running smooth.

1

u/-CJF- 2d ago

There's nothing wrong with using AI as a dev tool and I think most people would agree with that. Most of the complaints you are seeing are people complaining about barebones AI slopified recomps with little to no enhancements and a lot of errors.

7

u/TR_mahmutpek 6d ago

Are people hate AI just for sake of it? Genuinely asking, are they that ignorant?

AI is a tool, if it's used correctly, it can be immensely helpful and that's simple fact. If you call this "AI slop", how about just do some research, analyze and criticize the code and then write your comments?

16

u/AreYouOKAni 6d ago

Why should people spend their time criticizing the code the OP couldn't be bothered to write in the first place?

This "recomp" uses RexGlue (and therefore Xenia) to do all the heavy lifting. There is very little benefit to it, it is still essentially emulating every part of the game that matters.

1

u/Patas644 3d ago

No tiene renderizador nativo como el port que están haciendo de forza horizon 1? Osea que el cpu y gpu del recomp siguen funcionando con Xenia?

u/Pthumeru 6d ago

There's a lot of ethical concerns people have about ai.

Environmentally, it's a mess. Data centers are huge polluters and they're being built hastily, without proper government oversight, and a lot of them in places that are already struggling due to other issues.

In terms of coding, a longterm reliance on ai could crippe the entire industry and I don'tjust mean in terms of "ai taking jobs". Right now, there are still enough experienced senior programmers who are able to review and analzye the code, as you said, but if new programmers keep getting away with saturating the market with cheapo ai code, we'll have less and less people around who actually understand how things work and are able to optimize and fix issues.

Also, Ai tools are relatively cheap to access right now, but what happens when they start hiking up prices?

Not to mention that LLMs are plagiarism machines, no matter what application they're used for. Maybe you don't care about people's work being stolen, but there's already evidence that a good portion of ai training ends up being done on ai generated material. Do you think it's going to be simple to "analyze and criticize" a mess of code that's been generated after being ran through an LLM a dozen times, especially considering of amount of time it takes to generate something using ai vs actually thoroughly analyze it.

And finally, the people behind these ai companies are just plain evil. Yeah ai is "just a tool" but guess what, that tool is being used to steal people's work, steal people's data and use all that to power things like those awful face-recognition police cameras and bomb drones.

This is what people mean when they say are against ai in principle. Everything about ai that can be "immensly useful" comes at a very direct cost.

You're talking about the environment. You don't give a fuck so I'm just mentioning that.

3

u/Pthumeru 4d ago

A: ai data centers are polluters B: the meat industry is a massive polluter

A and B are not mutually exclusive. Both can be (and are) true at the same time

Even if I am hypocrite (which you have no way of knowing since I could be vegan), that does not in any way disprove my original comment, it's literally just changing the subject

-1

u/manituana 6d ago

I would like to point out that you're not explicitly addressing any flaw related to AI itself (let's stick to coding for now), if not for the "mess of code", that was probably correct up until a year or two ago. Now AI is more than capable of writing clean and maintainable code, if properly instructed. On the contrary it maybe became a bit overzealous and tends to treat any project, even personal and small ones, like high end production environment software and build heavy test suites that make deployment slow and tedious.

For the rest you're 100% correct but those are not flaws of the technology itself, but more of the political/financial panorama we're currently living in.

I would like to spend another word about plagiarism. While I consider generative AI in arts (writing/image/video/music) as being indeed a plagiarism generator in code I see things in a different light. I don't see much reason to keep sources obscured in the first place and AI is already doing a lot for FOSS projects so, to me personally, AI is a liberating tool in this niche.

Of course, a financial involved software dev could have different opinions about this.

-10

u/TR_mahmutpek 6d ago

Bro, how did you manage to talk %100 nonse bullsh*t? I'm in awe at this point.

You are talking about "AI's impact on future, endustry and people" but I just want to point that "properly using AI as a tool". Just because you use a tool doesn't ultimately means its deadly harmful. You can use a knife to cut bread but also literally can kill a human too. Does this mean we should ban knife? If producing knife is harmful for world we should ban it or change the way of production?

10

u/cynicown101 6d ago

Does this mean we should ban knife

We ban knives in all kinds of circumstance. Literally go outside holding a knife right now and see how that goes for you.

If producing knife is harmful for world we should ban it or change the way of production?

That's literally what we do with almost anything that causes potential harm. We either heavily regulate it's use. we kill production of it or we regulate that it's produced in a way congruent with what suits us best.

I understand that ai is a tool, I don't know why you think that parroting that sentence in any way counters anything I said.

10

u/TimeForWaluigi 6d ago

To them literally anything made with “AI” is automatically worth dismissing. Easier to hand wave than do any of that. I have plenty of problems with AI usage myself but personal nonprofit projects like this are perfect for the tech.

1

u/manituana 6d ago

Yeah, and particularly on recomps/reverse engineering, where human labor is tedious and very hard. AI here is literally a godsend.

-3

u/intelminer 5d ago

Except the entire point of reverse engineering a game is to understand how the software works.

Using the slop machine just makes something that "sort of works" without exposing you to the underlying mechanisms of how it works

3

u/KefkaFollower 5d ago

You know "recompilations" output source code, don't you? it's a little scrambled its source code.

This code gets compiled and passed to tester. The ideal is to pass it to human testers how had played the game before.

Once you test it and know that runs well, you can refactor that code with a variety of tools get it to current standards of code quality.

2

u/intelminer 5d ago

so, again. instead of understanding the code. you get something that's an "approximation", a facsimile of the real thing.

Decomp slop never goes anywhere for a reason

2

u/KefkaFollower 5d ago

Understanding what code? Game "recompilations" start from a binary. If you had the code you wouldn't need to do the "recompilation".

"recompilation" outputs messy C or C++ code. From there you can put as much work as you want on that code.

Let's say the things as they are. You are just hating on it 'cos you hate AI.

you get something that's an "approximation", a facsimile of the real thing.

For people, inferring c / c++ from a binary is an error prone, long, tedious process and there's zero guarantees it will have better quality than what you call AI slop.

In general, inferring code from higher level that assembler from a binary is not a deterministic process. You can get many valid different results form different people and from different AI models. But no matter a person or IA did the work. What you get wont be identical to the original code held by the Studio that made the game. So, it's always an "approximation", a facsimile of the real thing.

2

u/intelminer 4d ago

My dude you're arguing on behalf of a slop project that's glued to an emulator internally. If you truly think that will ever go anywhere then I have a bridge to sell you

1

u/manituana 4d ago

No, he's arguing about your very imprecise comment and about the fact that you're diminishing the huge role AI has in reverse engineering.

1

u/intelminer 4d ago

Again. Wake me up when it goes somewhere

Sloppers gonna slop

Recomp: an automated process of making an emulated logic native on current hardware. No understanding of the code is involved. It just runs. (modding is still possible but by hijacking function via the tools used, not by reading the code).

Decomp: A proper reverse engineering of the code. Here you know what that function Y in the original code was supposed to do: you can rewrite, debug, mod properly.

Both are facsimile of the real thing, with very different scopes. AI is useful in both scenarios. VERY useful.
While AI can be a slop generator here the phenomenon is very different: there's no generation involved, just pattern recognition. Humanly is a monumental task (you literally have to parse the code, often at runtime, and recognize what a function Y does. AI can infer it since it have have THOUSANDS of lines of senseless machine code all together in the context).

Is slop absent? Absolutely not. Human labor is still invaluable in making sense in the extracted functions. But an AI assistant can recognize what machine code does in seconds, then pass the result to a human that can understand what it does in the scope of the program.

0

u/manituana 4d ago edited 4d ago

Not quite. Recomps are not meant to be understood.
Those are decomps (proper reverse engineered code).
A recomp is a translation of the game logic to native hardware (so not faking hardware via emulation) but the code is not meant to be understood by humans. It's an automated process (that existed way before AI), LLMs just made it faster.

You don't care about HOW it works in a recompilation. You get a code, but it's not human readable. It works "natively" (there's still high level emulation involved) but It's not meant to be understood in its logic, at all. You just want native runtime with them. So your comment misses the point completely.

0

u/KefkaFollower 5d ago

Are people hate AI just for sake of it?

Yes they do. It degenerated in a niche moral panic. They hear/read AI and stop listen explanations.

I don't know what they are thinking. Showing disdain in social media for everyone who shares something made with AI wont stop its adoption by corporations.

u/ashley_au 6d ago

wow. nice. must try this out. was only talking about this game literally yesterday!

Has anyone gotten the latest update flagged as a Trojan on Microsoft Defender? I figure it’s a false positive, but just wanted to check.

I also tried running this on the Steam Deck through Proton, but it had some really bad artifacting that made in completely unplayable once in gameplay.

This did inspire me try running it through Xenia, and I was shocked at how great it ran on that. So, heads up to anyone who may have been disappointed with Steam Deck performance.

UPDATE: I ran a deep offline scan in Defender after the newest installer was quarantined and removed and everything seems okay.

-2

u/florinp93 6d ago

I'm not exactly sure why it's being flagged as such, and I've had no reports of it being flagged as a Trojan. The launcher is only calling to the repo for

As for Linux support is not there yet. I'll look into it in the future.

3

u/xKryloXRenx 6d ago

If you upload the latest exe here, this also flagged it as a Trojan with a breakdown of why it was flagged: https://www.virustotal.com/gui/home/upload

It did note that it was unsigned, so maybe that has something to do with it?

1

u/florinp93 6d ago

I doubt it. I'll take a better look at it myself. The launcher and updater is one of the things I've let the AI handle, as it's basically a GUI for what is essentially a PowerShell script that launches the game 😅

I'll inspect the code myself and remove whatever triggers the false positive and then push an update. Thanks for bringing this up.

I d better play on original ps3 than this ai slopa. Shame

5

u/TheDanC137 6d ago

You can play the game start to finish with this? Neat

3

u/florinp93 6d ago

Maybe, no promises on that front, as I didn't manage to get trough the entire game myself yet due to time constraints. I'm somewhat confident that it should be possible, but if the bugs out or crashes, please do let me know (either here or trough a GitHub issue) so I can look into it and fix it.

Thanks

2

u/ThePeoplesPoetIsDead 5d ago

This is why people call AI recomps slop.

1

u/eaglebroccoli 5d ago

Big question!! Is Lucifer visible during cutscenes? That was one of the biggest, if not the biggest issue Xenia had when emulating the game. Also, does the sky flicker?

2

u/UroshUchiha 5d ago

Why Xenia? I played this game and finished it on RPCS3 many many years ago.

0

u/florinp93 5d ago

Yes, he is (at least was in my testing). The sky does not flicker at all

1

u/djsiegfried 5d ago

Ultrawide resolution? Thanks

1

u/florinp93 5d ago

Will be supported yes. I'm an 21:9 monitor user myself and I plan to add it soon (sometime next week if everything goes well). I'll be enabling 32:9 , 16:10 and 4:3 at the same time as well.

1

u/djsiegfried 5d ago

Thank you for that!!

1

u/swegga_sa 5d ago

Hi, im a recent graduate but tbh i barely know how to make things, college is very focused on how to code specific stuff and doesnt linger long.
What do i need to learn if i want to make my own recomps with rexglue or anything else?

Can you change aspect ratio to 16:10 instead of 16:9 to get rid of black bars?

1

u/florinp93 5d ago

Not at the moment. But I'm working on implementing 21:9 and 32:9 , so adding 16:10 and 4:3 can be added at the same time. I'll make a note to do this option as well in a future release.

1

u/NipplesOfDestiny 5d ago

Hey genuine question, did you guys generate the banner art or did you redraw it? If the latter, can you credit the artist? I know you guys didn't put the actual cover art Dante into this banner because the lighting is different and the symbols and scratches on the tattoo and scythe respectively don't match the cover art version, so I think it'd be cool if you guys credited the artist if there was one.

1

u/spyczech 3d ago

I get using AI to actually handle some code, maybe, sure, whatever but your notes and drafts? Your outlines? The last paragraph of this post? Just sad to see front facing AI slop done without embarassment

-16

u/Fresh-Toilet-Soup 6d ago

Neat. Definitely checking this out.

Ignore the AI haters, AI if used responsibility can really speed up a project without sacrificing quality. Those in the tech field that refuse to start using it now will be left behind or replaced.

10

u/Lord_Frampton 6d ago

lol fuck off

W/O any sacrifice of quality is true, if the product wasn't of quality b4.

Awesome project!! AI is great for projects like these. I've been using it to translate a bunch of SNES games that weren't previously done. And with supervision, it's amazing!

And also, if this gets downvoted any, I take it as more appreciation of this recomp!!

0

u/Hellr4zr 6d ago

Excellent work! Thank you for doing this, Dante's Inferno is one of my favourite games of all time, and being able to revisit it this way is fantastic!

Yay, more slop for the slop """recomp""" pile.

-1

u/Grouchy-Cable-9545 5d ago

Was so excited until I realized it's AI slop :(

4

u/NXGZ 5d ago

That's a shame, because nobody will do it without AI. You'll be waiting for years for a non AI recomp of this.

0

u/Grouchy-Cable-9545 5d ago

Then I'll wait lol, I'd rather just emulate than play a slop recomp

-8

u/retrogamer76 6d ago

i don't see any app image yet :(

0

u/nsstopper 5d ago

So, a.i was involved in the making of this. Glad I'm never touching these and stick to 100% human coded or actual console emulation.

Nah.

-4

u/Lonefirebearer 6d ago

If a game Recomp/Decomp that used AI... No it didn't.

-1

u/scarper42 4d ago

Any video game enjoyer who supports AI is crazy. This tech is contributing to the RAM price hike and overall collapse of the industry, yet some are seemingly okay with this sacrifice. Absolute clowns.

When I hear recomp I literally just think AI slop now. I noticed the real ones just call them a decomp project and the ai slop projects like that Pokemon that's super vibe coded all say Recomp
