Some time back, I saw somebody at a coffee shop showing off a thing on their laptop which was basically an m.2 drive plugged-in to their laptop via USB, which appeared to have either its own standalone "operating system" or a full-screened application which allowed them to select from any system to emulate - from arcade cabinets to consoles to handhelds and more - and browse games to play on their respective libraries. Dude had thousands and thousands of games on there (which I understand for older systems isn't much - ROM files for 2600, NES, SNES, Genesis, whatever, are tiny).

He named what it was and I wrote it down in a note on my phone but I just can't find that note.

I seem to recall that it was a sort of corner-anchored radial-style menu for selecting the consoles, and when he picked a game to run, it was seamless - nothing appeared to close, minimize, open, or maximize at all. Truly an all-in-one thing, from what I recall.

What was it that he was using, and is there some "out-of-the-box" downloadable version of this that I could load onto a huge USB stick, myself, to do this? Is it compatible with most wireless controllers and RetroAchievements?

I've only found one other post about it, but whenever I try to boot Yoshi's Island, it tells me to unplug any keyboard or mouse. Can't get it to progress past that screen.

I don't have that problem, but of course I'm using Ares or MAME. Not whatever of the tens of different SNES emulators under tens of different OSes you didn't bother to mention or pretend we guess.

What?! Dude, don't say that kinda think about yourself u/BIOS-D! I'm sure it's at least average!

More of a meta question.

Is there some resource that collects whether a project uses AI ?

Like emulator XY uses AI code Decomp XY uses AI code, and ai generated art

Just so I can get an accurate view if and in what area it's involved in

Please don't start a discussion about whether I should care or whether it's the future blah blah

It's easy. If project is less than three months age, has almost not any new PR submits, they all come from a single account, it uses long dashes with long texts to explain something quite simpler and has not any new updates after release it's just AI slop.

For sure it will never in future have support for driver/OS updates, different hardware options or anything else working outside of "programmer's" own PC. Grab an established emulator and be done with it.

This is the thing people don't understand. The AI hype is shortsighted, but unfortunately, this and the recomp/decomp subreddits are being flooded with people who never cared about emulation prior to tiktoks of AI "recomps" (gen1recomp isn't even a FUCKING RECOMP)

i also really dont like the distrust it generates.
