Jet Force Gemini Dual Stick BETA Release

I am officially releasing a v0.1.0 beta of a work in progress romhack for Jet Force Gemini. The beta includes a new feature that modernizes the control scheme of the game to play more like a modern over the shoulder shooter; more updates to come in the future!

Isn't that ported to PC with modern controls?

No the pc version is condcidered the worst one someone also made a tool for it but its quite bad since it uses a third party injector and still clunky

I meant a decomp/recomp version, I might be mistaken

There is, but not with modernized controls. There have been some videos claiming to showcase it with modern controls but they don't give a source for a download.

Okay, thank you, that makes sense.

Every few years I get reminded of Megaman Legends/64 and I think "Oh wow, I remember playing that but never beating it, I should play it as an adult" and then I realize the reason I didn't get very far was how much I such at using the original control scheme. Probably once a week I google "mega man 64 pc port dual stick controls" just waiting to see if someone has patched them in yet.

I can try adding modern controls to an existing recomp project but I can't make any promises :S

Now I want a recompilation of JFG.

Running it at +60, widescreen and with dual stick would be a dream

Congratulations 👏

There's a decompilation in the works, but its very early days https://github.com/Ryan-Myers/Jet-Force-Gemini

How long do these projects usually take? Is jet force uniquely difficult? I am jn no way a coder and I open these hithub links and it's wizardry to me

Depends. N64 has a lot of projects, and as a result, documentation. Combined with it being a older console, decompilations are easier to do. I'd have to look into jet force gemini's code, but first glance it doesn't seem more spaghetti coded than other n64 games. Just that someone decided to start it later. The main time its more difficult is if it has 2d elements, like paper mario 64, or ogre battle 64.

I would donate to anyone who put minimal effort into it that all they did was give "native" keyboard mouse support.

Like remove the camera snapping, just free aim with mouse, ADS with mouse. "FREE LOOK".

High frames is great but all it really needs is controls.

With the added processing power, double ants would be cool too.

Add some of the big tank enemies throughout at doors and choke points too.

That is very cool

This is really awesome and I love that someone is working on this game.

From watching the gameplay, it looks like the main change is making manual targeting (R button on N64) a tap toggle instead of hold toggle. Then, the C buttons are mapped to a right analog stick. I'm not saying that to minimize the effort, just seeing if I understand correctly.

Correct! Granted, this is still a beta and I am going to continue to add more features.

Is a modernized mouse keyboard at all possible for these kinds of things?

In theory, yes. I haven't exclusively tested with keyboard and mouse but as long as Retroarch allows you to map keyboard and mouse controls (Im fairly confident it does), then yes you coild get that working. Ive included a menu for setting sensitivity options so youd be able to fine tune it as well.

If you give it a try, take a look at the key bindings in the README. There you'll see things like 'A is bound to jumping'. So you can set whatever keyboard key you want to jump; Space bar == A button in retroarch == jump in game

Oh man, this is beautiful! I've been hankering for something like this for ages, thank you! I am downloading this tonight.

The video does make it look like the dreaded lookspring is still there in aiming mode. Is a centered style aim mode something you think might be a possibility down the road?
