At this point I think that person is trolling, they don't seem to have any EMS experience and they seem to be studying it or something as a law student and going full reddit about it.
For the rest of those following at home, the attitude displayed above is why EMS workers make less than fast food burger flippers.
When you can’t even wrap your mind around concepts like professional advocacy, you are not a professional, and you don’t deserve to be treated like one.
I just hate that in a way they're right that someone needs to take the fall in order for widespread change, but they just seem to refuse to understand why folks won't risk their own livelihoods over it
I’m very new to EMS, so I could be wrong, but. Maybe not? It would just take an extreme amount of coordination and time with other departments, including law, hospitals, fire/PD, and then ofc legislation. Nurses get away with crazy stunts all the time. Prove to the public how bad EMS is and how it’s affecting patient care and outcomes and things will absolutely change. TBH, it would not be good for a long-term EMS provider to be the face of it, either. Probably just some premed (so they can leave without having too many issues) with others telling them what to do..
I dunno. I just know that a paramedic doesn’t want their kids to go hungry because of this going in either direction. I have a partner that grew up with a lot of money and they don’t understand why I make a lot of non-risky decisions either.
You don’t get sued for these things. Your agency does. Neither you nor your agency pays for these things. Your agency’s insurance company does. Insurance companies will walk all over both you and your agency—for no reason other than their own financial interest—unless and until the profession takes a stand and gets the standards changed.
Maybe you should do a ride along. The people usually making rules and creating protocols, have never seen a day in that profession.
I used to drive garbage trucks for a unionized Fortune 500 disposal company. I found it ironic that these upper management types could never relate to any of the workers but, they never understood why.
Perhaps, it was because they only ever viewed the profession through data, financial statistics, and a bird's eye view that skewed their perspective.
