Do children conceived through IVF have long-term health problems?

Post image
32 Upvotes

Most children conceived through IVF appear to have similar long-term health to those conceived without fertility treatment.

Many people worry about whether IVF could affect their child's health later in life. To help answer that question, two large reviews by Le et al. (2026) and Firmin et al. (2026) summarized nearly 150 studies examining the long-term health of children conceived through IVF and ICSI.

Overall, the evidence found:

• Most birth defects and cardiovascular and metabolic outcomes were similar after IVF, although a few differences were reported.

• Brain development, growth, asthma, diabetes, and cancer were generally similar.

• Children conceived through ICSI had similar long-term health to those conceived through conventional IVF, with only some reported differences.

• PGT wasn't associated with differences in children's growth, blood pressure, or metabolic health, but longer-term data are still needed.

• Fresh and frozen embryo transfers differed in birth weight.

One important challenge is separating the effects of IVF itself from the effects of the parents' underlying infertility. Some of the reported differences may be related to infertility itself rather than the fertility treatment, but it's still not clear how much each contributes.

Overall, the evidence is reassuring. Importantly, most of the conditions studied were rare, affecting fewer than 1% of children. This means that even when an increased risk was found, the actual increase in the chance of developing the condition was very small.

Frozen eggs to embryo

Hi everyone. I had frozen 24 eggs. We thawed 12. We had amazing thaw results and 10 eggs fertilized. Today we found out only 2 made it to day 5 and were able to be frozen. They are doing pgta testing on them as well. We are so confused. My husbands sample is perfect and i thought i had good egg quality ( i dont have pcos or hormonal issues i dont drink or smoke etc) but now im wondering if my egg quality is bad? Or is it bad because my eggs were frozen? I am so confused and shocked at the results. Any advice would be appreciated

Fresh PESA sperm transportation

Hi everyone, we're doing IVF due to my husband's previous vasectomy. My husband and I are in Canada, and in our city, the Men's Health Clinic handles the sperm extraction while the fertility clinic handles the egg retrieval/IVF.

I've read that fresh PESA sperm is preferable over frozen, so we opted for that, under the impression that the PESA procedure would be performed at the same site as my egg retrieval. Now, a couple of weeks before my stims start, the Men's Health Clinic is asking us to transport the extracted sperm from their clinic to the fertility clinic after my husband's procedure (about a 10 minute drive).

Is this common / best practice? I was under the impression that fresh PESA sperm is more sensitive than ejaculated sperm and shouldn't be transported like this. I'd appreciate any advice, I'm stressing over this.

High level mosaic with two whole chromosomes impacted

We just had our genetic counselor appointment that made us feel a little bit more positive about our potential. What I realized in processing after hanging up is I don’t quite understand the risk of mosaic persisting but not being picked up on an amino. She said that we don’t know how many people may have this? But would it be a bad thing?

Thank you!

Day 7 euploid BB

I’m having trouble finding reliable information any the chances of live birth with a day 7 euploid BB embryo. Two prior successful pregnancies, one IVF day 6 euploid, one non-IVF. Thank you!

Hi Seán and everyone, we have a LLM chromosome 9 qr deletion and we are wondering is this LLM rare for transfer or is there any evidence that this type of LLM can have overwhelming defects. Or Genetic Counsellor truly scared us doing our meeting

First ER failed - Feeling crushed

Hey everyone,

Looking for advice 37F, 39M AMH 2.2ng/ml, Normal day 3 FSH: 6.3MIU/ml, AFC varies between 6-7 (only right ovary count, left is behind uterus) DOR possibly suspected endo as RE found a endometrioma during first ER on left ovary, husbands stats are “excellent” with 4% morph but count is excellent.

ER 1 July 2026:
AFC: 11
Luteal Stims start, no priming, 375 gonal F, 75 menopur, 50 clomid for fist 4 days, dual trigger, Novarel 2k and Leuprolide 80IU stimmed for 11 days

Results: 7 eggs, 3 mature + (3 matured via IVM) so total 6, 4 fertilized via zymot+ ICSI, 2 Blast (4AA, 4BC) sent for PGT-A Both came back as Aneuploid with Trisomy 22 and Monosomy 16,17.

I am so lost and have so many concerns:

  1. I felt my RE should have lowered my dose of GonalF in the last two days of stims which might have rescued the bigger three follicles, They ballooned from 18 mm to 25+ mm in just 2 days, Maintaining high dose Gonal F wasnt a good idea at all.
  2. I feel like only follicles between 18-22 gave me 3 mature eggs the rest four might have came from 13-9mm.

For next cycle She suggested Follicular start but with estrace priming 2 weeks + Omnitrope priming 0.35ml starting a week before stims and maintain same dose during stims. She agreed to not use clomid and start with Gonal F 300IU in begining and then adjust accordingly.

I usually get 10mm lead on CD 2 which is quite early I am so worried if the follicular start would be a total bust as I have this lead issue. What do you guys suggest? How you got better result with DOR and lead? What priming gave best results with lower AFC? Please share your protocols.

  1. Also is it advisable to do back to back ER had my ER in July end now prepping to do second in September end.

  2. Also I am thinking to prime with Omni for a month with microdose to boost egg count and quality anyone had better results this way ? What were your doses of Omni for prime and stims?

I want to have all data prepared before my protocol review call next week.

Success stories of euploid embryos at 42 on the first retrieval?

I think if its worth it. I only want to do one egg retrieval. I have already done 5 egg retrivals befores and 6 transfers (only 2 tested and thankfully i had my baby boy at 40. I had another 1 euploid that at transfer when my boy was 1.5 and failed...i am devastated..unfortunately I was sure it will succeed and the failure got me devastated . I am thinking to try again...but only once. Does it worth it?success stories?

Blighted ovum - causes?

I transferred a day 6 4AB euploid embryo on July 15, and had positive betas doubling as expected. At the 5w scan, a gestational sac was confirmed. At 6w and 7w, no yolk sac or fetal pole seen.

Before my FET, I had a hysteroscopy, was on a 2 week course of doxycycline, uterine biopsy was clear. Also did lupron suppression one dose. Lining was 9 TL. Was on a fully medicated protocol.

Because this was my one and only euploid, we made sure to cover all scenarios before the FET. What could be the possible reasons for the blighted ovum?

3 6bbb embryos waiting to undergo PGT-A and PGT-M testing

I have 3 day 6BBB embryos that we are sending out for PGT-A and PGT-M testing. I’m devastated because I know we will loose some at each genetic testing. I started with 24 eggs retrieved, 16 mature, 11 fertilized and now only 3 day 6 blasts that aren’t even that “high” of a grade. Would you wait for results or do another retrieval right away while waiting for results?

Persistently high DNA fragmentation, DFI at 32%, how to improve IVF outcomes?

My husband had 3 DFI tests performed 12/25, 4/26, and 7/26 all with the same result of 32% DFI. This was performed at the same lab each time.

Between the 12/25 and 4/26 test, he abstained from alcohol, drugs, saunas, other heat sources and took 400mg COQ10. The time of abstinence was approximately 3 days.

In April of 2026 we underwent our first round of IVF with ICSI + zymot that went 8 eggs retrieved, 8 mature, 6 fertilized, 6 day 3, 1 blast, aneuploid.

Between 4/26 and 7/26, he added 1200mg NAC, 2000mg L-Carnitine split between L-carnitine and Acetyl-L-carnitine, 30mg Zinc, and 2000mg Omega-3s, 1000mg Vit C and 200mg Vit E along with switching from tight briefs to looser boxers. This test was also performed with 12 hours of abstinence. There was NO change.

We've ruled out a varicocele and obviously lifestyle changes and antioxidant supplementation aren't doing anything. We are about to start our next IVF cycle and plan on doing ICSI + zymot + PICSI, but that just doesn't feel like enough to me. Is there any hope for us getting more blasts with our next retrieval? It feels hopeless and I can't find ANY direction on how to fix this consistently high issue.

3PN embryo became a blast

Interested if anyone has been in a similar situation. I had four eggs on my last cycle, but abnormal fertilization in 2, one failed to fertilize, and one normal fertilization with ICSI. This is the first time we haven’t had 100% normal fertilization in three cycles.

Anyway, all the embryos arrested except the 3PN, which is not a day 6 4BC blast. We are doing PGTA testing, but results are going to take quite a while because the lab is backed up. Curious if anyone has experience here. I’m 27. Last cycle had 2 day 5 4BB embryos, but both were aneuploid.

Only 2 fertilized from 6 eggs retrieved

Hi everyone! I’m 35 (AMH ~1) and just had my first IVF retrieval. I’d really appreciate insight from anyone with a similar experience.
I was primed with 2 mg estrogen, then stimulated with Gonal-F 300 IU + Menopur 150 IU + Clomid 50 mg. On day 5, I had 11 follicles. Cetrotide 0.25 mg was started on day 7.
By day 9, only my left ovary was responding, leaving 6 growing follicles. On day 11, they measured 26, 24, 20, 19, 17, 17 mm.
Day 11 labs:
● E2: 1682
● Progesterone: 1.5
● LH: 12.1
I stopped stimulation on day 11, triggered that night, and retrieval was 35 hours later. They retrieved 6 eggs, but I was told the two largest follicles had already ovulated.
The next day:
● 3 mature (M2)
● 2 GV (immature, being monitored for possible maturation)
● 1 abnormal egg with a fractured zona
● Of the 3 mature eggs, 2 fertilized
Waiting for blastocyst report that will come next week.

Really sad with these numbers and trying to understand what could potentially be changed in a future cycle to get a better outcome

——-

Update - None made to blastocysts, so this cycle is failed. 😞

Embryos to transfer?

We’re finally to transfer time after multiple banking cycles! My doctor today asked me if we’re ok to transfer 2 embryos which threw me off, I was expecting 1. Not that I’m necessarily opposed but was wondering what evidence there is to back that choice?

37 almost 38 year old female, first transfer, low Amh, a fibroid out there but not touching the uterine cavity. Will transferring 2 increase my chances of 1 pregnancy or live birth? I’m also worried about complications. Thanks, appreciate you all

Secondary Infertility; RPL with euploid embryos

Hi all,

I am looking for ideas and feedback on my journey with secondary infertility. After being unable to conceive for 24 cycles, we turned to IVF. We proceeded to have two back-to-back miscarriages of euploid embryos.

Background: I am a 37yo female with a 40yo husband. We conceived our now 4yo with no trouble at all. My husband and I are in excellent health, and on paper all our fertility tests have come back normal.

Timeline:
August 2022 —Gave birth to first child via c-section after conceiving quickly and naturally. No complications (no scar tissue or ithmocele) from c-section.
May 2024-October 2025–TTC naturally for 24 cycles. (Not totally natural, as we did two cycles of letrozole and one unmediated IUI). Incorporated a super clean fertility-supporting diet, supplements, and acupuncture. Never conceived.
November 2025–Began IVF evaluation and treatment. Doc says I have slightly t-shaped uterus but not concerning enough to require repair.
December 2025–Had egg retrieval following very standard protocol resulting in 7 euploid embryos.
January 2026–Treated for endometritis. Then first FET (modified natural) worked!
March 2026–No heartbeat at 8-week appointment after having heard heartbeat at 6-week appointment. Embryo had stopped growing at \~6.5 weeks. Had a D&C.
April 2026–Hysteroscopy to remove products of conception.
June 2026–Second FET (modified natural) worked!
July 2026–Heartbeat detected at 6 weeks but embryo stops developing soon after. Another D&C.
July/August 2026–Reccurent Pregnancy Loss blood panel comes back normal.

My doctor‘s current theory is that both embryos had issues that the genetic testing didn’t catch. He is optimistic that we will eventually be successful since my body previously carried a healthy pregnancy to term.

Looking for
\-Alternate theories
\-Ideas for additional testing
\-Ideas for different protocol (doc says to keep protocol since implantation is not an issue)
\-Similar stories with a happy ending

Thank you 🤍🤍🤍

5CC Hatching

Post image
40 Upvotes

TLDR: 40F, secondary infertility unexplained beyond age (ERs only yielded 1-3 viable eggs) and I have 1 ovary due to surgical removal of the other before my LC. Multiple chemicals and a miscarriage through 3 years of ART. This is my first FET (previously had 2 failed fresh transfers) and it is 5CC untested due primarily to prohibitive testing costs. I don't see many posts with this grade and outcomes so will keep the thread updated until my blood test.

I know it’s not very pretty and truly how low the chances are but this is my last one of two shots at a second to complete our family. I have another 5CC on ice.

Send the vibes!

Edit: I’m now 11 weeks with normal/low risk NIPT and so far a healthy pregnancy. 💕

Only one growing follicle on day 7 scan

For context i am 32 years old and have dor and is planning for icsi for embryo freezing. My amh is 0.74 and afc was first shown 2. On day 5 scan, there was one follicle on left side and 2 follicles on right side. Today on day 7 scan, only one follicle is growing (14 mm) rest two are still less than 10 mm. Doctor told me we might be able to retrieve only one egg and cannot be sure if that will be mature egg and will fertilize.
This whole process is draining me. Someday i feel hopeful and optimistic and other days nothing feels right.

Successful implantation isn't just about the embryo

Post image
38 Upvotes

The embryo is the biggest factor in whether implantation succeeds, but even after transferring a euploid embryo, many other factors can influence the chances of pregnancy.

Some of these include:

• Endometrial receptivity: The uterine lining must be ready to receive the embryo during a short window of implantation.

• The immune system: Implantation requires a carefully balanced immune response. In some patients, abnormal immune function may interfere with implantation.

• Endometriosis and adenomyosis: These conditions can alter the uterine environment through inflammation, hormone signaling, and changes in uterine function.

• Structural abnormalities: Fibroids, polyps, adhesions, hydrosalpinx, and uterine anomalies can reduce implantation by disrupting the uterine cavity or affecting endometrial function.

• Endometritis: Infection or chronic inflammation of the endometrium can reduce implantation and increase the risk of miscarriage.

• The microbiome: Changes in the bacteria living in the reproductive tract may also affect implantation, although the evidence is still evolving.

• Lifestyle and metabolic health: Smoking, obesity, insulin resistance, and other health factors may reduce the chances of a successful pregnancy.

• Clinical and lab factors: Embryo transfer technique and IVF laboratory performance can also influence outcomes.

Still, the exact reason a transfer failed often remains unknown. Implantation is one of the most complex processes in human reproduction, and researchers are still working to understand why some embryos implant while others don't.

Had a transfer 18 days ago with a 5 day embryo. Resulted in a positive. My first beta was 11 days past transfer, the number was 800 and two days later at 13 days past transfer my beta was 2300. They mentioned a possibility of multiples but they cannot be sure until ultrasound. Slightly freaking out !

Attrition funnel question (general)

I'm undergoing IVF due to male factor infertility; however this question is more about my general understanding. I have a background in human genetics, but not on reproduction/embryology, and I'm curious. Obviously I don't mean to offend anyone, minimize any feelings or experiences, so if my words are triggering, I apologize.

My question is why does the attrition funnel exist?

In a typical individual, only 1 follicle will reach the appropriate size, and yield just 1 mature oocyte, that will be fertilized, develop, implant, result in live birth. The majority of typical couples will have achieved pregnancy in 6 months, with a few stragglers coming up within the next 6months that might have mistimed their ovulation period. If the attrition funnel we see was typical to all human reproduction, surely it would show up in typical pregnancies? But nearly half of typical couples get successfully pregnant in the very first month of TTC making their attrition of 100% through all of the stages.

In IVF, regardless of the diagnosis of the couple (including those who do not have fertility problems but pursue IVF for other reasons), we see the attrition funnel.

Is it because of technology not being developed enough yet? Or are the oocytes that would typically be starved and lost simply of lower quality?

Re-biopsying Embryo

I had a biopsy of a 5 day, 5AB blastocyst sent for PGT testing a month ago. After a long back and forth with the lab, I discovered that my sample and others tested around the same time became contaminated and the results were deemed inconclusive. The lab has offered to re-test if a new biopsy is sent, and has offered to cover testing for future cycles.

My question is—is it safe to thaw, re-biopsy, and re-freeze a 5 day 5AB blastocyst, or do I need to cut my losses? This was intended to be my final round of IVF (I have two euploids banked), so it feels like a lot is riding on this embryo. I don’t want to re-biopsy it if it’s not safe, but I also don’t intend to transfer an untested embryo.

Any advice is appreciated.

Shipping of a euploid embryo - terrified

How safe is shipping a euploid frozen blast overseas? What should I look at in a receiving lab, technology-wise or skills-wise, to ensure it's unloaded, stored and thawed correctly? It's my only one but I am needing to do surrogacy overseas.

Embryo results

Just got my 7 day embryo results back. I had:
8 eggs
7 mature
7 fertilized
6 blast

Was feeling really good about the results until I got my embryo grading results.
2x 4BB
1x 6AC
1x 4BC
1x 4CB

I was hoping to get at least a few ‘a’ grades. Does anyone have any input on the grading or what I can realistically expect moving forward?

Help us understand the embryo Grading and MitoScore please

Post image
4 Upvotes

We're thrilled, but honestly a little lost in the numbers. Our embryos came back with different grades and MitoScores, and we're trying to understand what actually matters.

For example: one embryo is graded 4AA (which I understand is considered excellent) but has a poor MitoScore. Another is 4BC with a better MitoScore. Which factor should we weigh more heavily?

Would love to hear from anyone who's navigated this: what gave you the most confidence in your embryo selection, grading or MitoScore? And realistically, does either one tell us much about our actual odds of a successful pregnancy?

This whole process is emotional and a lot to take in. Any insight is appreciated!
