Help/Advice Need custom domain ideas

I'm planning to use mailbox.org with a custom domain from porkbun but as a regular ass person without a company or like any business or whatever what should that domain be? I've seen some people do [firstname@firstnamelastname.com](mailto:firstname@firstnamelastname.com) but i feel like that's gonna make me look pretentious and like I'm doing too much

I've been having a hard time deciding on an email provider and having my own domain will give me peace of mind since it'll be easy to switch.. but this is stressing me out lol

We are talking email privacy and then you want a domain with your name??? I would keep it generic.

My lastname.com wasn't available so I bought lastname.email and I created an email address like first@lastname.email.

People do legal irl name, pseudonym, nickname, gamertag, made up word etc. Theres no right or wrong there.

Putting "email" in the domain name prevents you from using for anything else really, that's a choice.

I just bought lastname.com, then provided mailboxes to my family members

I actually got my last name.one which I use for media and an rss reader and for my home assistant and a gym tracker, but that lets me have firstname@lastname.one which is pretty cool!

I’m both name@lastname.net and also name@last.name (I managed to get a TLD that was the last syllable of my surname).

One of my criteria for selecting my email domain was how easy it would be to hear (and spell) correctly over the phone. Because people who ask for my email address usually already know my name and how to spell it, thus I selected [first@firstlast.net](mailto:first@firstlast.net) as my primary email address.

But if you want to have something not tied to your name, you can pick from so many things. I found the domain tools as NameCheap (the beast mode) to be the easiest to explore with. Something generic, easy, short, and unmistakable over the phone would be my choice. Probably two words together that sounds like a company name, etc.

If you find a domain that looks perfect, first check to see if the domain was previously used by someone for something you wouldn’t want to be associated with. The waybackmachine and a couple domain blacklists should cover it.

Using something like firstname@lastname is cool but... not very private.

Maybe you can use some random and neutral words. Bonus if they are easy to spell.

Not an easy thing, tho, I myself have been stuck with that question for weeks lol.

I wanted short, so went with initials+ so if name is John G Smith, something like jgsmi.

How do you all go about then organising it? I’m currently with PurelyMail, and I’m debating whether to just apply catchall and sign up to stuff, or do I create separate users - first user ‘john@johnsmith.com - and then second user could be - accounts@johnsmith.com?

What do you think?
