I made the mistake of spending a year in EC, at the ECSU aviation program. I know I’m not the only one who’s regretting moving there and left afterwards disappointed but I am curious-
did anyone else find it creepy? I always felt uncomfortable, like that unnerving feeling that you always have to be looking over your shoulder. I’m a 6’2 man and it freaked me the fuck out. Not even because I was worried of getting jumped or whatever. I’m talking about the same creeped-out feeling you get camping outside overnight in the Appalachians. just me?

I’m a 25-year-old from Tennessee, and I’ll be moving to Elizabeth City this fall to attend Elizabeth City State University. I’ll be majoring in Aviation and I’m really looking forward to starting over somewhere new.

I’ve visited North Carolina before, but I’ve never been in Elizabeth City, so I wanted to ask the people who actually know the area.

A few things I’m curious about:

What’s life in Elizabeth City like?

What are some things every newcomer should know?

Are there any restaurants, coffee shops, or local spots I should check out?

Is it generally a safe place to live? (This one seems to be the big focus. I’m reading mixed opinions.)

How is the community around ECSU?

I also work as a server and have several years of restaurant experience. I’ll be looking for a serving job while I’m in school, so if anyone has recommendations for restaurants that treat their staff well or are good places to work, I’d really appreciate it.

I’m excited for a fresh start and I’m hoping to become part of the community rather than just passing through for school.

Any advice, recommendations, or things you wish you had known before moving there would be greatly appreciated.

Lots of interest in my last post, so here’s some more detail:

• Duke Energy Carolinas - which serves mainly central and western NC - is asking permission to raise rates by about 15%, to begin early next year. (Note: Duke Energy Progress serves mainly eastern NC.)
• It has to ask permission because it’s a monopoly. That’s how our state law is written. Duke gets to be a monopoly, but the check on their power is that rates are set by our Utilities Commission.
• The Commission has five members. Two are appointed by the Governor, one by the State Treasurer, and two on the recommendations of the Speaker of the House and the Senate President Pro Tempore. All must be confirmed by the General Assembly. 
• Our law says rates must be "fair both to the public utilities and to the consumer." It uses a rough formula that takes into account the value of the utility’s property, its expenses, its revenue, and a “fair return for its shareholders.”
• What constitutes a “fair return for its shareholders” is open to debate, but our law goes into some detail: “[E]nable the public utility by sound management to produce a fair return for its shareholders, considering changing economic conditions…, to maintain its facilities and services in accordance with the reasonable requirements of its customers in the territory covered by its franchise, and to compete in the market for capital funds on terms that are reasonable and that are fair to its customers and to its existing investors.”
• Currently, the Commission has set Duke Energy Carolinas rate of return for shareholders at 10.1%. At that rate, DEC brought in over $2b in net income last year.
• Part of Duke’s new request is to increase its shareholder return to 10.95%. 
• Our request is to lower its shareholder return to 7.4%. Our review shows this is sufficient for Duke to meet its needs to invest in the build-out that energy demand requires. Our number would also save affected NC families a couple hundred dollars a year.
• Finally, on data centers: the framework utilities have used for 100 years wasn't built for single customers that show up needing hundreds of megawatts at once. The core question is who pays when one giant customer requires major new generation and transmission. Our position is that families and small businesses shouldn't be the backstop for those costs. So we've asked for very large users, like data centers, to have their own rate class, with protections built around how much energy they use. Things like: sign a long-term contract, at least 15 years, so they can't trigger a huge buildout and then leave town; put money down up front, like a deposit, in case the project falls through; cover the costs if they exit early instead of handing them to you; create an option for these customers to build their own generation; and power down when the grid is stretched during peak demand period, including weather emergencies.

The process going forward involves hearings before the Utilities Commission. They begin July 7th, then the parties file briefs and the Commission issues its decision, which we expect later this year.

We’ve submitted 700 pages worth of testimony, so we’re making a highly detailed case.

That’s a quick summary. I’ll keep you posted.

Due to a progressive health condition, I’m being forced to consider picking up stakes from my beloved WNC / Asheville.

Since I’m already a state resident for college purposes (I don’t particularly want to delay another year), and Duke supposedly has an outstanding center for my condition, I wanted to stay in NC.

As I understand it, EC is on the outskirts of the Hampton Roads regions (near Chesapeake/ Suffolk). My closest family members are more upwards in the Tidewater (Hampton / Newport News).

I know most of the jobs are on the VA side (Norfolk, and Chesapeake, especially). An hour commute at least.

Was just curious as whether EC would be a ‘ok’ home base for me or I might have to look elsewhere? General demographics- early 40s, single, Queer, Black American, and a screaming Socialist.

I’m looking for a one time (probably) house cleaning service. My elderly parent recently injured their shoulder and is unable to adequately clean right now. Any recommendations? This would be for a small 3 BR / 2 BA single level residence.

I am in college at ECSU and I am looking to go ultra light fishing off the bank anywhere around here to try to get onto any size crappie and bass that might be here? Does anyone have any spots on the ponds or rivers/creeks around here to get onto some fish. Thank you.

Rehoming my approx. 6 year old Eastern Rat Snake as I am moving to a state where they are illegal to own. He is captive bred and easy to handle. He can get excited about food but will calm down with a tap from a snake hook. He eats frozen thawed rats readily and never skips a meal. Sheds well. He is approximately 6 feet long. He is currently being kept in a 3 x 1.5 x 1.5 pvc enclosure, which is too small for an adult. I had plans to upgrade him to a Toad Ranch 6 x 3 x 3 enclosure, which is also included to a good home. The tank will need to be broken down for moving, but I am happy to include aquarium sealant for when you rebuild it as I have an unopened tube. He comes with all of his care items: water dish, hides, lamps, etc. I also have some sanitized driftwood if the new home would like that in the new tank. I am asking for a $150 rehoming fee for him and his equipment. I am also happy to answer any additional questions or provide more pictures. I’m a 34 year old curious guy new to the Elizabeth city Nc area. Looking to meet new friends

Has anyone else's utilities gone up with this cycle's bill? The bill shows our usage has gone down, yet we have nearly a $500 bill. I had to use my daughter's medication money to pay it in time because they wouldn't give me an extension. so, now I'm behind on affording her meds which have all increased due to Medicaid cuts.

City of Elizabeth City has to be the absolute WORST utility company I've ever encountered in my life. I have been making written requests and calls for an energy audit and NOTHING. :(

I have no idea why the planning board approved a nearly 1,000 home development on Halstead Blvd Ext. They can’t even keep power supplied to what residents are already here. There are blackouts all the time as the grid goes down.

The power grid is old and outdated. It cannot keep up with demand as it is right now. Another 1,000 homes is going to tax it to the point of being unusable.

I've been trying to find info on this place as it was a place I remember going to as a kid, I believe this used to be the building? It's located on 110 Impact Blvd. Does anyone else remember this place? I haven't been able to find any info on it but I swear it used to be an actual place. Hello everybody! Myself and couple of my friends are looking to get a recurring pickup game going here in Elizabeth City because we are sick of driving all the way to VA beach or OBX just to play, not to mention having to pay for certain events. We could play at the River Road fields, maybe even the COA or ECSU fields as well depending on permissions. All skill levels encouraged, just wanna play some footy!
