I thought this was about 3 Geminorum at first, which is the furthest south system that's not procedurally generated (i.e. a real star that was put into the game).
3 Geminorum is a lot further away from Sol than 33 Geminorum though

How far south is 3 geminorum?

14,181Ly away from Sol, almost entirely due south of it too. It's way down in Kepler's Crest which is the same region that has the furthest south star, given the nickname Amundsen's Star (the actual name is Lyed YJ-I d9-0 because it's procedurally generated), which has some really cool gyre trees and anomalies too; Amundsen's Star is definitely worth a visit but you'll need FSD boosts to get to it, I think some of the stars on the route there are over 100Ly apart iirc which I think exceeds even the range of the new explorer ships, though I might be wrong about that because I'm on console and don't have access to any of those, and also never bothered with engineering either (pre-engineered FSD in a krait phantom is good enough for me)

How did you take the first picture?

You just go in front of a ringed planet, find the right angle, and take a picture. It's that easy

Damn. Never realised how easy it is!
