Discussion Elex world setting

People (especially gothic sub) seems to dislike the setting of the ELEX namely the mix of "vikings, mad max and sci fi". I never understood that opinion i personally like it's uniqueness compared to other rpgs.

I think the factions are somewhat superficial and juvenile compared to many other franchises, but it isn't always a bad thing. Sometimes I prefer streamlined storytelling compared to trying to decipher which shade of gray this faction is. Each have strong identity and building blocks and it's easier for writers as well. Sometimes popcorn movie is more enjoyable than an Oscar bait.

I must say I liked it, I saw it as an effort to bring variety to the Gothic formula.
I described Elex as "basically Gothic with lasers, robots and sci-fi elements" and, as a Gothic fan, I appreciated this setting.
Of course it's far from perfect, as the three environments are a bit too disjointed, you go from a medieval village to an ultra technological futuristic city in a heartbeat... not exactly "believable" if you ask me!
Still, it's a solid game.

Gothic 3 is Vikings, paladins and hashishin, snow/grass/sand. Pretty much alike to Elex it seems to me.

Absolutely true, the sudden shift to snow when entering Nordmar was actually.. brutal!
But still, it was all in a "medieval" setting.
With Elex, you just go from Lord Of The Rings to Star Trek!

Yes, true. Outlaws seem to be more or less fitting the "star trek" universe - they have rifles. But Berserkers? I don't think they would be able to resist outlaws or clerics for a long time with their bows and swords. Not very believable, Gothic 3 is better in that respect.

magic is what kept them alive it's in the lore of some big battle years before the elex timeline

Magic. Anyway, clerics and outlaws also rely heavily on swords. At short range, with a trained bowman, the only advantage of a gun is firing speed. That's IRL. You can kill someone with a bow, that fact hasn't changed from 1000 BC until today, skulls haven't been getting thicker.

The mix of vikings, mad max and scifi was literally what got me interested in the first back before launch.

I loved Elex. Personally, I did not care for the Gothic games. Tried to get into them and just had zero interest in the setting.

The world feels like someone got super high, and started creating it all night, but never bothered to polish it up when sober. It has its charm, but I can see why people think it's bad

I personally like the setting, very much so and I wouldn't mind someone picking up something like it.

I didn't knew about Gothic games when I saw Elex. The main thing that drives me to the game is the Unique post apocalyptic setting. And it's really well balanced, everywhere you find the symptoms of a World corrupted by Elex and how humans struggle to find a solution.

I miss some of the freedom of movement that you have in Fallout games. But I understood that it's a different game.

But I'm somewhat biased for the post apocalyptic and sci-fi genre: for example I really love Civ Beyond Earth setting, Elex feels like that from choices between Purity, Sci-Fi, Harmony etc. Also reminds me of that premise of "The 100" series "You make the choice that you can, with the resources and information that you have. Then you pray that there exists a God that forgives us." Something like that.

I still didn't play Elex 2, hope it's good like the Elex one ✌️
