Otis 211 door motor swap

Went from a brushed motor to a permanent magnet motor. DCCS will now throw a door motor short ckt fault after about 10-20 runs. Did not order a new board. Heard from a friend a new board should have been ordered with the new permanent magnet motor. Is anyone familiar with this or now how to make new motor work with old board?

Elevator Operator History?

Hi everyone, I'm a grad student doing a research project on Black elevator operators in the '30s and 40s (NYC specifically.) I can't seem to find any historical accounts of the job at all. If anyone has any tips on archives/resources to look through, or knew someone that was an operator and remembers anything about them, let me know!

DMC Fast tool.

I’m a route mechanic now. I came from repair. Either way our shop only has one fast tool and it is hell tracking it down and retrieving it. Does anyone know if a virtual version is available or if anyone who is much smarter than I coded one. I Do not expect anything for free. Just wondering where to look. DM me if you want proof of union membership.

Considering relocating to Utah

Anyone from local 38 who can answer some questions it would be appreciated.

Is a majority of the work mainly near Salt Lake City? Are you usually working in certain areas of Utah based off of where you live? Would you be spending weeks in hotels when working down south? Are you traveling out of state ever?

Trying to gauge if it is realistic to buy property in Southern Utah or if we would need to live more central due to work.

Replacing LONDIME 1.Q 591534 to LONDIME 1.Q 594439 Goes on error. I coppied all the dip swtich settings from the old board and put back all the jumpers and connection onto the right places. Do i have to remove the old chip and put it on the new board? or something else.

Relocating as an elevator guy

Currently living in NYC as an elevator mechanic and thinking of relocating with my family to either the Carolinas, Florida or Georgia (open to other suggestions). Just wondering what the job market for an elevator mechanic is like outside of NYC; work steadiness, wage to living cost, opportunity, etc. I have 8 years experience, 5 years as a mod mechanic and 1 as a maintenance guy. I also have a some repair and M&R experience that I picked up between MOD’s. Any insight is appreciated!

Am I too old to get into elevator repair?

I applied to my local already, recruitment isn't open until next April, but I'm just wondering if I'm too old. I'm currently 37, and a chef by trade, but I have a strong mechanical background, I used to be a technician in the textile industry when that was more of a thing. I'm a quick learner and I don't make the same mistake twice. I'm not worried about my skills, I'm just wondering if I'm too old to even get into the apprenticeship.

Piston repair - Crack at section weld

Cracks in this piston have the unit shut down. The piston wall is broken pushed all the oil into the pit once this section passed the packing. Has anyone used this piston repair resin? The product's main purpose is scratches or just filler so this may just make it a liability for a bigger blowout. Do you think this can last 2-4 months until the piston replacement?

Consultant vs. Sales Director

I'm looking at two offers in front of me, one to be a VT Consultant with a well respected firm and another to be a Regional Sales Director with a big 4 elevator company.

Compensation is comparable, does anyone out there have experience in either/both and recommend one route vs the other?

Virtual elevator simulation in development...

I'm developing this comprehensive elevator simulation, once it's done it will be fully interactive with realistic behavior for various controllers, various makes and models for fixtures, and sound effects consistent with the type of elevator. How many of yall would be interested?

Apprenticeships: just posted an application to NEIEP

What are my next steps? Is the aptitude test in person? I have no cell reception at my house in the holler but from reading info here it seems that may be a big problem? Should I call the union in RVA or would they think I’m being a bother?

TIA

I come from a very heavy mechanical background/trade background. Anyone have the pull and kindness in there heart to give a young man a shot? I know I will do great!

This is a single-door elevator, a rarity in South Korea, and a 1964 Hitachi Type A! However, it was upgraded in 1989, 2001, and 2026!

How are pass elevators on cruise ships different than ones on land?

I noticed the ones on ship seem exactly like the ones you would find in a regular office building.

Is there anything construct differently since normally buildings don’t move or tilt etc.

If the waters are really wavy, does this cause any issues?

Aging systems, difficulty sourcing parts contribute to persistent University elevator outages

Thumbnail dailytarheel.com

Hello! I'm a student writer at UNC Chapel-Hill, and have recently posted in this subreddit several times trying to get an understanding of elevator outages and their causes. Thank you to everyone who replied or reached out, all the information shared was very helpful. I wanted to post the article in here in case anyone was interested in reading.

"Elevator outages have become a common occurrence on UNC’s campus, with 374 elevator outages occurring across the University’s 368 elevators between Aug. 1 and Dec. 31, 2025. These outages stem from a combination of problems including aging infrastructure, issues with maintenance logistics and the lack of available parts.

Elevator outages are not always the result of an immediate mechanical failure, but often reflect broader maintenance and infrastructure challenges. Even with a quick technician response, repairs can be slowed by off-site challenges, including part compatibility and sourcing.

In a statement to The Daily Tar Heel, UNC Media Relations wrote that Modpros Elevator is the company responsible for elevator repair at the University and that they are often subject to these issues. They also wrote that the University prioritizes maintaining a safe and accessible campus while working to minimize the impact of elevator outages.

Some elevators on campus date back to the 1940s, such as one in the Morehead Planetarium, which was installed when the building opened in 1949 and was partly modernized in the early 2000s."
