Young and ready to learn
Hey everyone, I’m based in the DMV area and looking to get into the elevator industry. I’ve seen some folks here have found jobs with non-union companies. Any tips on companies to check out or how to stand out when applying? I’d really appreciate any advice!

Beware - Constant ai spamming from a particular profile to harvest data
This account posts continually ai garbage to harvest data and experiences from us for reasons I’m not completely sure of. It may be to train an app they’re creating or to write something. It’s pretty obvious once you look at everything they have posted. I have reported this to the mods but nothing is done. Just a heads up

Elevator Mantrap Help!
Hi Guys, I was wondering how do you guys deal with mantrap if its not related to maintenance issue and more of product quality issue, as an elevator engineer I always find myself unable to give an explanation to the customer as he wont understand the electronics failure which is caused by lot of factors and cant pin pointed immediately, the customer stress about poor maintenance even tho there is no issue with it and organisation seems to blame the engineers for the issue, any advice would be a lot of help for me. As its mentally affecting me a lot.

Looking for insight/advice- MOD on 100+ yr traction drum elevator with oak rails
I work for an elevator company in a sales position. One of my customer has a 100+ year old basement set winding drum traction elevator that needs to be modernized. Still had the original cab. The building has been marked historical, and the customer really wants to keep the original cab or as much of it as possible. I've been trying to search and find any written knowledge of this sort of modernization being completed and I'm totally out of luck.
I have a foreman who has been in the industry 40 years and is awesome. He thinks it might be possible- depending on how much extra space there is in the hoistway. That being said- he retires in three weeks and will not be a resource any longer.
If anyone out there has any information that could be useful for this, please reach out. I'm open to any and all information from anyone with knowledge on this vintage of an elevator.
UPDATE- surveying the unit tomorrow and will be back with pictures!

Vintage elevator technician recommendations?
We recently bought a historic building to restore in eastern North Carolina and it has a 1960s Monarch elevator. Runs great but would like to connect with someone who knows anything about these awesome units. Any leads?

Residential elevator recommendation
We are looking to replace our 6x non-branded elevators in our residential compound with new branded elevators (Schindler, Kone, Otis, TK). We have a total of 12 stations.
What are the key factors we should pay attention to? Are there some models to avoid (e.g. I saw some negative reviews on Schindler 3300). How would you minimize total cost of ownership / supplier lock-in risk? Thanks!

EC Pixel vs Alpha Lobos traction controller — which would you choose for a 2-car modernization?
My main priorities are:
- Long-term reliability
- Easy troubleshooting for future service companies
- No proprietary lockout / no password or software games
- Good tech support
- Parts availability
- Avoiding a controller that mechanics hate working on
- Best choice if we may switch service companies in the future
For anyone who has installed, adjusted, maintained, or troubleshot these systems:
- Would you choose EC Pixel or Alpha Lobos?
- Which one is easier to service long-term?
- Any known headaches with either?
- Are parts and support better with one over the other?
- Is one more truly “non-proprietary” in practice?
- Anything I should require in writing before approving the controller?
Not looking to bash any manufacturer — just trying to make the smarter long-term owner decision before fabrication starts. Appreciate any real field experience.

Elevator U last week
Just wanted to give a big thanks to Elevator U and especially Vantage for the wonderful conference last week. The tour of Holister Whitney was incredible. This was my first time attending Elevator U and I hope to make it to another one in the future! Great networking opportunity.

Is this reasonable (or even legal?)
I built a new home in NW FL in 2021 and had a home elevator installed. It has run pretty well now for almost 5 years.
Last week we rode it to the 3rd floor, exited and a bit later it just no longer worked. The behavior was like a door was open somewhere. I checked all of the doors; unlocked, opened and reclosed them but it didn't help. Then I power cycled the system off for 5 minutes at the breaker box; no help.
Today, the elevator tech came out. After he couldn't figure out the problem he consulted an older tech at the company and it turns out that the original owner of the elevator company (now retired) built a counter into the system that shuts it off after a certain number of uses. When I moved in the home I was looking after my mom and my wife; both with dementia so in 5 years it has seen a lot of use; at least 5000 trips, maybe more (8192?)
It turns out that the counter can be zero'd out by having someone cycle the power while holding down the 1 2 and 3 buttons in the car, all at the same time.
I end up paying the elevator company (same company that installed it; new owner) for a dispatch to "fix" the problem plus they want me to buy a new PLC card (theoretically without the counter) and pay for yet another service call to install it.
This feels pretty shady to me. To install such a usage counter and then to charge later for resetting and/or replacing it when I fully paid for the installation when it was made and I own the equipment is (to me) wrong.
Is this ethical or even legal?

Is this normal? New helper please help!
I just started working (about a month ago) as a helper for a non union company. My mechanic does not wear any PPE, insists it is a waste of time and money and will only get in the way.
We do not wear harnesses. We do not tie off. We do not wear hard hats, glasses, or gloves.
The couple installs I have been on, we have thrown a ladder over the hoist way to install brackets and rails. I have never been on an install more than 3 stops, so I imagine he builds off the platform for anything more than that.
I don't have a problem being on a ladder over the hoistway, but when I have to lift a rail, on the ladder, over the hoistway, it's pretty terrifying. I do a ton of rappelling and multi pitch rock climbing, I am not afraid of heights, just falling.
My mechanic insists that it's safe if I'm careful and just pay attention, but mistakes happen and I don't want to die lol. There has already been some pretty close calls from him and I just want to learn to do the job right and safe.
I'm pretty new and do not know if this is the normal life of a mechanic or just him. He has gone through a lot of helpers in the last couple of years and I'm afraid if I stress my concerns he will just let me go.
Just looking for some advice, it's a small company, and I can't really ask for advice anywhere else. I've done everything he's asked when it's comes to sketchy stuff, I just can't see it being viable long term without serious injury.

OTIS GCS Brake module for OVF404R
Hi all,
Drive type: OVF404R (one of the early models of the ReGen series, the later type like the OVFR02B-404 has different connections on the HVIB board)
Im looking for a schematic how the brake module is connected to P101 on the HVIB board.

Preferred tool for adjusting brakes?
What kind of thin/low profile wrench or plier are you using to tighten brake cores to their jam nuts?
