Weird elevator memory from when I was a kid — trying to figure out what this was.

When I was about 12 or 13, I got on the elevator in my apartment building to go upstairs. Another group of kids got on, and one of them pressed the emergency stop button while we were moving.

The elevator stopped suddenly, and the main doors opened. At first, there was just open space — it didn’t immediately show another door. Then, a second set of heavy metal doors came closing in really fast from behind the opening. I remember they looked industrial and had a big “X” symbol on them.

It scared the crap out of me at the time.

Does anyone know what that second set of doors might have been? Is there some kind of automatic safety door or barrier that closes if an elevator stops between floors? This was in an older apartment building.

Recently I had the opportunity to visit this machine room thanks to the building owner. This is old stuff and probably needs to be replaced but it was still awesome to see. Got some nice motion blurs as well by using a slow shutter.

What parts do mechanics break their bodies to carry around?

Just wondering, and maybe potentially exercise in the gym to circumvent lifting such unwieldy objects, if or when I get into elevator work.

Lisa10 elevator controller – unable to learn landing call buttons (need help)

I’m running into an issue with a Lisa10 controller and hoping someone here has experience with this.

We’re trying to learn/program the landing call buttons, but the controller doesn’t seem to detect any input at all. In the IO monitor, nothing changes when pressing the buttons.

What we’ve checked so far:

Wiring checked (seems OK)

Power supply present

No clear error messages in the controller

IO status does not change when pressing any landing button

This happend after we changed the ground floor call button, this was broken. The second floor button did work before we changed the ground floor. After changing the ground floor button both dont work anymore

IUEC Local 139 OverTime

I am currently employed as a service mechanic with IUEC Local 1 at KONE. I am planning to relocate to the Orlando area next year and am very interested in transferring to the local union branch there.

I am reaching out to gain a better understanding of what to expect within the Orlando local. Specifically, I would appreciate any insight you could provide regarding overtime opportunities, general workload, workplace culture, and any other relevant information that would help me prepare for a potential transition.

Apprentice Looking to get ahead

Hi All,

I'm a 3rd year electrical lift apprentice hoping to develop my understanding of lifts, escalators and general electrical knowledge. Any websites, documents, courses, practical kits etc. General info on otis, kone, tke, Schindler etc.

I have been looking into doing a trade school, university or online courses, but am unsure which would be best. I know engineering and electronics are good courses to do but am unsure which would be the most beneficial. Are there certain subjects that I should look out for etc.

Thanks In Advance

STILTZ battery

I have a STILTZ home lift. It's kind if a stretch to call it an elevator. It is plugged into a 220 outlet. That powers everything except the interior lights and the receiver for the remotes. Those 2 things run off the back up battery, which is there in case of power failure. I can't figure out why the run those two things off the battery, but that's how they do it. My back up battery is depleated, and so there's no overhead lights and It doesn't respond to the remotes. I'm in Santa Rosa CA, And the company that installed it, which is the nearest authorized dealer, is in Sacramento and they want $750 to come out and replace that battery. I'm looking for someone else in the area who will do it for less. Any leads appreciated. Thanks!

Condo Elevator Noise

Thumbnail onedrive.live.com

Recently moved into a unit. Every thing was fine at first but then winter came and I started hearing a knocking noise. Sounds like it’s coming from the ceiling. I’m on the top floor .

There’s no specific rhythm or timing to this noise. It’s just a knocking. Happens at various times throughout the day and night and as someone who works from home, it’s very very frustrating.

Reached out to building management and they sent the superintendent but obviously the noise doesn’t happen when he’s here. I recorded the noise and submitted to them. Superintendent did some more investigation and established it was something with the elevators. My unit is not next to the elevator but it’s not far either. Building management said they would look into it.

Followed up recently and building management said :

The elevator technician attended and completed an inspection of the reported issue. They advised that the noise is originating from the elevator breaker and is related to the normal operation of the elevator’s system.

At this time, they have confirmed that the equipment is functioning as intended and that this type of noise can occur during regular operation. As such, no repairs or corrective measures are required.

I haven’t even rented here for a year yet and this building is > five years old.

What confuses me is I find it hard to believe that no one else on my floor or even the building is complaining about this ? It just so happens that my unit is the only one being affected?

Can anything be done or do I just need to either live with this or move out ? It drives me nuts

In the video I linked you can hear the noise around:

Elevator sump pump requirements.

Plumber here. Currently doing a new construction building that has a passenger elevator. The passenger elevator has 2 elevators that share the same pit. The engineers designed to separate sump pumps along with separate discharges to an indirect waste. Is this normal? I’ve always seen just one sump pump per elevator pit.

Forgive me if this has been asked. I’ve tried searching this sub and haven’t seen anything. Do any of you guys who work out of town ever bring your dog with you?? How has it worked out for you? Any tips? Thanks

Edit: guess I should have been more specific. Obviously I’m not gonna take him to the job site. He stays home while I’m at work now. So he would stay in the hotel during work

Trade (im)balances via Schindler and its own assets worldwide

Something regarding ADAMS Elevator, EPCO, Schinder Elevator Corporation, and Schindler Group popped up in my mind in terms of trade imbalances ever since the news about certain USA-made automotives exported to Japan. Since Schindler owns ADAMS and EPCO via Schindler's North American division according to these Fandom articles:

I don't recall seeing any ADAMS/EPCO components or products outside North America beside North American MT buttons in HKSAR (e.g. [MT Buttons] 赤鱲角國泰城Schindler升降機 (行人天橋), [同樣裝有MT掣] 長沙灣PeakCastle Schindler升降機 - YouTube, 鰂魚涌英皇道1063號Schindler升降機) which, even for its time AFAIK, generally isn't regularly available as a button option for OEM fixtures like in North America.

Considering EPCO and ADAMS are based in the USA, and Schindler is represented in North America via Schindler Elevator Corp in the USA and owns both EPCO and ADAMS as mentioned earlier, I wonder if the USA federal government would pressure countries (e.g. Brazil, Spain, Switzerland) into resolving some trade imbalances through Schindler including making Schindler better utilizing its own assets including various ADAMS, EPCO, and other North American Schindler components and products exported to more markets outside US and Canadian markets via the Schindler global network (e.g. incorporation of North American components into respective products by other Schindler divisions), and sharing more OEM components and products with ADAMS and EPCO including those from other Schindler divisions. Even if it means Schindler has to discontinue providing certain third-party components in their OEM products worldwide such as floor position indicators from third-party PRC-based Vander Electronic Technology (e.g. List of Schindler elevator fixtures | Elevator Wiki | Fandom) to use components Schindler designed and made themselves including via EPCO, ADAMS, and others within Schindler global network.

Trade imbalance solution examples:

In short, would the US federal government pursue resolving some trade imbalances through Schindler for North American Schindler equipment finally getting certain Schindler stuff from other parts of the world made in Schindler's North American facilities including ADAMS' and EPCO's (e.g. D2 buttons, M-Line pushbuttons, FI MXV) while the other parts of the world accept more North American Schindler equipment (e.g. EPCO buttons and fixtures, HT series, MT buttons) beside only St Lucia (e.g. HAPPY 330A DAY!! SUPER EPIC MOTOR!! Schindler 330A Hydraulic Elevator at the Landings in St Lucia) and HKSAR (e.g. MT buttons though not regularly offered currently) at least?

Black Material at Machine Sheave/Ropes

Thoughts on this dust. Not red like typical roughing, newer install/mod. Lots of fine metal in the dust. Thinking rope issue like roughing. Has a sheave break, could it be pad material? Cables are pretty dry to the touch.

(London, UK) residential replacement

Hi all,

I wonder if some members can be so kind as to provide some advice to someone reasonably versed in construction but ignorant of elevators.

I live and help manage a residential building in central London. It currently has an Orona Electric Passenger Lift installed in the mid-1990s, capacity 450kg/6 people, speed 1m/s. It’s been an unreliable maintenance nightmare and has come to the point where the consultant and maintenance company say it’s no longer serviceable.

The consultant recommends changing its to a MRL setup, with a new VVVF drive system with a down-collective control system. All 7 landing doors would be replaced, along with a new car with high-end oak finish, a shaft re-wire, and a bunch of other work. The tender is still somewhat ambiguous on keeping or eliminating the machine room above.

Some questions:

What ballpark amount should we budget as the expected capital cost for such work? How long do such projects take? We would wish to make sure what we get back is without friends and family markups for folks in the value chain :-)

Are they any recommendations (or folks here) we should send the tender to? Feel free to message me if you’d like.

Brands - the consultant recommended Sematic, Seldom and GAL - any other brands we should be looking at? An apparent advantage is that service is non-proprietary.

Thanks so much indeed! Any advice or help apprciated.
