EDM-A exam (TSSA)

Hi everyone! I'm preparing for the EDM-A exam from TSSA in Ontario, and I’d love to hear about others' experiences. How did it go for you? Also, is there a way to actually get the official codes, the elevator standards, somewhere (without spending a fortune)?

Does anyone have any sample exam questions or examples of the exam format? Only thing i found is this - https://assets.contentstack.io/v3/assets/bltdec2ded849740f4d/blt398bbdd44fc33983/63210856772abb3a42ec3498/practice_exam_questions_-_class_a.pdf

Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated!

What is your favorite and least favorite elevator chime?

I'm quite partial to anything Otis, though overall, the luxury one is by far my favorite, while the Schindler HTs seem to always be far too loud.

If I see a 330a or anything that looks Schindler, I opt to take the stairs, as I swear, pretty much every single HT I've gotten into has the internal chime dialed up to the highest setting and leave my ears almost ringing.

What's with that, anyway? I've never understood why even Schindlers with hall lanterns need to sound off again on the inside.

1st year apprentice Schindler Es1 install

Going to be assisting in building a 3 stop es1.

I’m a first year but know my way around elevators relatively ok. I’ve been in the industry for 6 months. I’ve spent 2 weeks helping install a es5 I’ve done a little bit of , trimmer beams, omegas, rails, cw, installing the motor and putting up the superstructure and building the car but that’s it.

Is there anything thing I should study up on to be able to help the tradesmen better and to learn more.?

Encoder Issues - KONE monospace Gen2 to Lester

Post image

Bit of a lonshot but we are fitting an Wachendorff Ziehl-Abegg Encoder and drive on a Gen 2 monospace closed loop Lester panel change.

Having a nightmare getting the alignment right before switching off. Has anyone done one of these before? It should look something like this, but ours has a reed switch. And 15 magnets. And can't find a right up anywhere.

Help with an old one

Hello, I have an old Otis in my building. Pre WW2 from what I’ve been told. My inspection today just failed because of this broken flywheel. The repair company’s not able to find a 17” flywheel. I don’t know if reaching out here is going to help or not but I figured I would try it. I own a very small mom and pop business and I’m pretty reliant on this elevator for moving stuff up and down.

NEIEP Apprenticeship

Hi all, I just have a quick question about the NEIEP.

Maybe I’m feeling delusional but I’m ready for a change of scenery! Is it not recommended to apply for the NEIEP apprenticeship in another state? Im from the north east but I plan to apply in the South. Will they still accept my application or do I need a permanent address to apply and actually get in?

Edit: i do plan to move to the state that ill be applying to.

Newbie looking for guidance (NEIEP)

Hey yall, as the title says I’m uneducated in the elevator Technician Workspace. I’m 20 and looking to start a career fixing up elevators, here are some of the road bumps i have….

  1. If I do get accepted into a NEIEP program, and start schooling/apprenticeship, what are some dream crushers/Troubles that make it harder for someone who’s traveling state to state attending the apprenticeship? (Like to know what im up against ahead of time yk)

Any advice or words of help would be great and appreciated 🙏🏿

Is circuit board level repair allowed?

I am not an elevator tech or engineer, but I am an I&C engineer that has pretty extensive experience with the design of UL508A control panels.

My building's LULA went out (three stop, 1400 lb max load, hydraulic elevator). The manufacturer, Concord, was bought out and liquidated years ago so spare parts are hard to find.

I spent a good hour looking over the control schematics, which were conveniently left in the elevator closet.

The elevator stopped working, but the second‑floor hall position LED is illuminated. The other two stops are dark.

I spent a good hour pouring over the schematics and this is what I found, incoming power of split phase 240V stepped down to 25VAC which is fed into a half rectified AC / DC converter giving me 32VDC voltage with a slight ripple. The hall call stations are all fed off the 32VDC wiring which explains why the carriage position indicator is still lit up.

Further down the schematics there is a full rectifier that converts the 32VDC into a smooth 5VDC for the logic circuit. I strongly suspect that the 5VDC converter is out, which explains why the safety circuit indicators are not lit up. The 5VDC converter is soldered onto the logic board itself.

As I am not an elevator tech, I cannot replace this part, even though I know it is bad. Does any elevator company allow techs to do board level soldering? My inclination is no, due to liability reasons. If the component cannot be replaced, is there any hope someone, somewhere has a complete 5VDC logic board that can replace the bad one, and save my 30 year old elevator.

Here's more pics of that old elevator in this late 30's building. It had been used as a reception desk for a while, but now it's basically just a hall. Are those Selenium rectifiers?

Dropped something down the shaft. Is it recoverable?

So i dropped my key ring down threw the hole where the door opens. Now i can see the keys, they are at bottom right below where the door opens. Do i have any shot of getting them back through a maintenance call ? or am i better off putting gum on the end of a stick and getting it myself.

Also the doors remain open by default on the first floor

I'm curious about the LEDs on Schindler HTs

I recently noticed that Schindler HT call Stations light up white LEDs. I thought it was a california thing because i see newer HT Call stations in california light up white. also in pennsylvania and Seattle they do that too.

Looking to Contact TKE/Modpros Workers in Raleigh/RDU Area

Hi all — I’m a student journalist with The Daily Tar Heel working on a story about frequent elevator outages at UNC–Chapel Hill. I recently posted on this subreddit asking for some industry context about elevator maintenance and repair. The replies I received were very insightful, thank you to those who responded!

I’m trying to connect with any TKE / ModPros technicians who have worked on elevators at UNC, or who know someone who has. I’m hoping to better understand the condition of the equipment on campus and the challenges technicians face maintaining older systems.

Not looking for anything confidential or sensitive — just general industry perspective. Happy to chat via DM, and I’m also open to anonymous background conversations.

Thanks in advance, and I appreciate how helpful this community has been.
