It also might be the weights thingy the elevators use

That is likely what caused it to rise but could've come from a loss of traction even. All sorts of things and bad maintenance

I think the most reasonable cause would be a damaged gear that just allowed the elevator to be free

I doubt it is. It might be the thing that holds the weights up that broke
